A Kuching Walkabout
We woke up at 8:00am and were out the door by 9:20am. Twenty minutes later, we arrived at Plaza Merdeka and parked in the basement. Since the mall wasn’t open yet, the security personnel advised us to take the elevator up to the ground floor and exit to the street.
India Street, After a Long While
Our first destination was India Street, a place we hadn’t visited in ages. With over 140 years of history, it was renamed in 1928 to honour the Indian merchants who settled there. In 1992, it became a pedestrian mall — now a lively stretch filled with textiles, clothing, spices, and souvenirs.
Cat was immediately drawn to Nizamir Textiles. We walked in and eventually bought:
- 2 sets of kain sarung
- 2 meters each of woven cloth in Sarawakian motif
Total: RM95.00 (≈ USD22/EUR20).
Still in India Street, we stopped for breakfast at Jubilee Restaurant:
- Roti Canai (each)
- hot Nescafe
- Iced Milk Tea
Total: RM9.20 (≈ USD5/EUR4).
Our Roti Canai took half an hour to arrive — apparently forgotten, despite the restaurant being almost empty.
After eating, we doubled back to Nizamir Textiles to buy another seven meters of the same woven cloth for RM140.00 (≈ USDx/EURx).
From Carpenter Street to Main Bazaar
We continued onto Carpenter Street, then turned left onto Jalan China before emerging onto Jalan
Main Bazaar. From Borneo Point, Cat picked up a dress in local motif for RM35.00 (≈ USDx/EURx).
At Little Borneo, we bought several keychains for RM22.00 (≈ USD/EUR5).
At Kwang Yan Trading, we picked up:
- 5 packets of Sarawak pepper
- 2 packets of Pansuh paste
Total: RM75.00 (≈ USD19/EUR16).
We then walked back along Main Bazaar until we reached Peanuts Anchovies, where Cat ordered a Green Tea Lemon and I tried the Iced Ribena Sprite Lychee. Total: RM14.85 (≈ USD4/EUR3).
A Visit to Borneo Headhunters
By the time we finished our drinks, it was already 12:15pm. We made the short walk to Borneo Headhunters Tattoo to gift Robin and Ernesto a packet of Terengganu serunding — a small thank you gesture.
The Heat Wins
We continued strolling along Main Bazaar and onto Jalan Tunku Abdul Rahman until we reached the iconic Cat Statue. We took the customary photo — which became this video’s thumbnail — but the heat was becoming unbearable. Walking back to Plaza Merdeka was no longer an option.
So we hailed a Grab for RM5.00 (≈ USD/EUR1), and once we reached the mall, we headed straight to the basement carpark and set course for Matang Metrocity.
What’s Next
Stay tuned as we meet up with Marvin, the hero who rescued our yellow submarine.
