TGG Day 3 │ Merdeka Day • Pottering Around!

Merdeka Morning

Our third day in Kuala Terengganu happened to be Merdeka Day, Malaysia’s annual celebration of independence on 31 August. We woke up early and left the rest house at 8:30am, heading to the home so Cat could start a load of laundry before breakfast.

We planned to eat somewhere in town, but as soon as we reached Jalan Sultan Ismail, we saw that the road was closed for the celebrations. Knowing it was pointless to try, we turned back to the home and ordered breakfast through Grab.

Breakfast at Home

We chose Warung Atiq on Jalan Pasir Panjang and ordered:

  • Nasi Lemak with Omelette (each)
  • Iced Lemon Tea
  • Iced Coffee

The total was RM25.20 (about USD6/EUR5). Due to the road closures, delivery took longer than usual, but our food arrived at 10:40am — and it was worth the wait. The Sambal gravy tasted just like my school days, and the steamed Ikan Aye (Mackerel Tuna) was perfect.

A Day of Chores

After breakfast, we got straight to work. I settled at the laptop while Cat continued cleaning with her vacuum and other tools. We skipped lunch since we were still full and made do with leftovers from Gerai Kuih Gong Kapas.

We also managed to set up a three by three meter tent at the front porch. It took effort, and we forgot to film the process, but it felt good to get it done.

In the evening, we went outside to clear the weeds that had taken over the drain — this time remembering to capture footage.

Dinner Delivered

Traffic around the home was reportedly terrible because of the Merdeka celebrations, so we decided to order dinner through Grab again. From Warung JNA Bapatoh, we ordered:

  • Pulut Kuning Daging Gulai
  • Pulut Kuning Ikan Aya
  • Nasi Dagang

Everything came to RM33.30 (about USD8/EUR7). After dinner, we started another load of laundry and waited for it to finish before locking up and heading back to the rest house at 9:00pm.

Ending the Day

It was a full day of chores, small victories, and quiet moments — the kind of pottering around that always feels satisfying.

Stay tuned for our next video for even more pottering around.

TGG Day 2 │ Adik Beradik Sri Kolam Seafood!

Craving Ikan Celup Tepung

Even after a long day of home improvements, we still had energy for a local favourite: seafood dipped in flour and deep fried. The dish is called Ikan Celup Tepung (ICT). Despite the name, it includes more than just fish — prawns, squid, and other seafood get the same crispy treatment.

Driving to Kampung Teliput

We hopped into BiBi and drove half an hour to Kampung Teliput. Our destination was Warung Adik Beradik Sri Kolam Seafood, a spot famous for its unbeatable views of the South China Sea. Getting there also meant crossing the Terengganu Drawbridge, something we always enjoy.

Traffic was heavy and slow, but we eventually reached the restaurant. With only thirty minutes left before closing at 7:00pm, we quickly ordered:

• 10 sticks of Keropok Lekor
• a skewer of Prawns
• one Ikan Kembung (Chub Mackerel)
• a round of drinks

Everything came to RM31 (about USD7/EUR6). Like many eateries in Kuala Terengganu, the restaurant closed early to make way for Isha prayers.

Evening Errands

We took a relaxed drive back, avoiding the congested coastal road near the drawbridge. On the way, we stopped at Mr DIY along Jalan Tengku Ampuan Mariam for some essentials, which came to RM119.10 (about USD28/EUR24). We also picked up a deodorant from the 7 Eleven on Jalan Pejabat.

We reached the home at 8:30pm and spent a couple of hours there before returning to the rest house to shower and wind down for the night.

Ending the Day

It was a simple evening, but exactly the kind of local experience we always look forward to when we’re back in Kuala Terengganu.

Stay tuned for our next video as we try to have breakfast at our perennial favourite chicken rice shop, Chuan Kee.

TGG Day 2 │ Kedai Makan Ezan • Letrik KT Soon Heng • Home Improvements!

Starting the Day

We woke up early and left the rest house to start a load of laundry at the home before breakfast. Just across Jalan Sultan Ismail, beside our neighbour Ah Tee’s furniture shop, stood Kedai Makan Ezan — better known as Pok Loh. We naturally ordered Nasi Dagang, and with drinks our first breakfast in Kuala Terengganu came to RM16.50 (about USD4/EUR3).

Morning Errands

After breakfast, we walked back across the road but continued on to Elektrik KT Soon Heng along Jalan Pejabat. We picked up a few items for RM55 (about USD14/EUR12) and returned to the home to wait for Ah Seng the electrician.

A week before this trip, on Ah Seng’s advice, we contacted Mrs Tang of Kejuruteraan Letrik Dan Hawa Dingin Tahiti to order a 1 horsepower Daikin air conditioner. We paid her RM1,180 (about USD278/EUR239) by bank transfer and arranged for Ah Seng to collect it.

At the same time, we had also arranged for Hafiz to come by and dispose of old furniture. For RM200 (about USD47/EUR41), he and his crew arrived at 11:20am and cleared two iron single bed frames and three kitchen cabinets. They finished in fifteen minutes, we paid via QR code, and they headed to the dumpsite.

Installing the New Aircon

Ah Seng arrived at 11:45am and began installing the new aircon in the small ground floor room. An old unit had been there before, so replacing it was straightforward. This was one of the final steps before the home could be lived in again. We considered adding another aircon upstairs but decided to leave it for another trip. Our goal was to have the home ready for Chinese New Year next year.

While Ah Seng worked, Cat pottered around the house and I continued editing our videos. Midway through, he left to buy some parts and returned after lunch to continue.

Lunch Delivered

We were too absorbed in our tasks to go out, so we ordered lunch through Grab. Both of us chose Nasi Minyak Daging from Parsley Cafรฉ for RM27.80 (about USD7/EUR6). Our food arrived at 1:30pm, and after eating we went straight back to our chores. Ah Seng finished the installation a few hours later, and we transferred his RM520 fee (about USD123 / EUR105) via QR code.

One More Repair

Just as we thought we were done, we discovered a leak in the kitchen sink pipes. We contacted our regular plumber, Ah Huat, who arrived at 4:00pm as Ah Seng was leaving. After checking the damage, he went out to buy parts and returned to fix the leak. He finished at 5:30pm, and we paid him RM100 (about USD23/EUR20) in cash.

With all major work completed, we finally breathed a sigh of relief.

Stay tuned for our next video as we head out for an early dinner of flour dipped seafood!

TGG Day 1 │ City One to Lim Sian Tian • Uncle Chua!

Back on the Road Again

We were on another road trip, this time heading back to my hometown of Kuala Terengganu. We were here five months ago to buy some electrical appliances, and this trip was our chance to continue where we left off.

We woke up at five in the morning and left before dawn for the long drive up the east coast. After almost an hour on the road, we exited the Karak Highway at the Bentong Toll Plaza, passed the Karak Toll Plaza, and joined the East Coast Expressway (LPT) at seven.

Breakfast on the Highway

Instead of stopping at the Temerloh rest area like we usually did, we continued to the Gambang rest area. There we had a simple breakfast of plain Nasi Lemak packets. With drinks, the total was RM12 (about USD3 / EUR2).

Even though we left Kuala Lumpur with a full tank, we topped up RM34.38 (about USD8 / EUR7) at the Petronas station here. It came to 16.77 liters, or 4.43 gallons — about RM7.76 (USD1.83 / EUR1.56) per gallon.

We resumed our drive at 8:30am. Two hours later, we made a short stop at the Ajil rest area. By eleven, we passed the Kuala Terengganu Toll Plaza and headed straight to town for lunch.

Brunch in Tanjung

Instead of our usual favourite, Chuan Kee, we tried Uncle Chua in Tanjung. We arrived just after eleven and ordered:

Salted Egg Chicken with White Rice
Sambal Petai Seafood with White Rice
Coca Cola
Honey Lemon Tea

Our brunch came to RM39.65 (about USD9 / EUR8). After eating, we went to the house for some light cleaning — which quickly turned into several hours of work.

Checking In and Chasing Dinner

By 3:30pm, we were exhausted and hungry again. We drove to the rubbish bins, then doubled back to check into the rest house. We paid a RM100 deposit (about USD24 / EUR20) and received Room 3A, the one with twin single beds that we had requested. We unpacked, showered, and rested, but by five we were starving. Brunch felt like a distant memory.

We drove to the house to lock up properly, then headed to Kuala Ibai for dinner at Warung Norazila — only to find it closed. We tried their other branch in Chabang Tiga, but it was closed too.

A Local Treat

Then we remembered our favourite traditional cake stall on Jalan Panji Alam: Gerai Kuih Gong Kapas. It’s a local gem with all kinds of sweet and savoury Terengganu treats. We bought:

Laksam Kuah Putih
Laksa Terengganu
Kuih Bom
Popiah Basah
Akok

Everything came to RM30 (about USD7 / EUR6). We brought the food back to the house and ate happily — so happily that we forgot to film anything.

A Cool, Quiet Night

Rain started to fall, turning the evening cool and peaceful. I worked on our video while Cat kept busy around the house. At ten, we walked back to the rest house and got ready for a good night’s sleep.

Stay tuned for our next video as we have breakfast across the street and welcome Seng the electrician to install a new air conditioner in the home.

Sunday Outing │ Aeroline Tickets • Other Errands!

A Busy Sunday in the City

July had been hectic, and before we knew it, August had arrived. With a four day weekend coming up, we wanted to plan a trip to Johor Bahru. So we left home at 10:55am and caught the RapidKL #303 bus to Corus Hotel for RM1 (about USD/EUR0.20).

Sorting Out Bus Tickets

At the Aeroline counter, things got confusing. Only a 5:30pm return bus was available, which meant reaching Kuala Lumpur close to midnight — not ideal. So we decided to skip it.

At 11:30am, we took a Grab to Berjaya Times Square for RM20 (about USD5/EUR4) to check the Super Nice Express counter. No return tickets were sold there either.

Update: We later bought our return tickets with Causeway Link Express for RM69.90 (about USD16/EUR14).

Lunch at KL Sentral

With the main errands half settled, we took the Monorail at 11:50am to KL Sentral for RM2.70 (about USD0.60/EUR0.50). We arrived twenty minutes later and walked straight to Thai Street Food for lunch. We both ordered:

  • Krapow Chicken
  • Coca Cola

Lunch came to RM33.60 (about USD8/EUR7).

Touch ’n Go Errands

After lunch, we headed into NU Sentral and rode up to the Touch ’n Go office. One of my cards, with RM63.44 remaining, was expiring in September 2025. We cancelled it and were told the refund would take a month. I bought a new NFC novelty card for RM29 and reloaded RM50, bringing the total to RM79 (about USD19/EUR16).

Shopping Around NU Sentral

Next, we went down to Watsons where Cat picked up hair products for RM110.30 (about USD26/EUR22). Then we stopped by Milk & Barley on the lower ground floor for half a dozen pastries at RM46.50 (about USD11 / EUR9).

We went up one floor to withdraw cash at the Maybank ATM, then up another floor to Yamazaki Boulangerie Chaude for buns and pastries at RM35.60 (about USD8/EUR7).

The Long Ride Home

We left KL Sentral at 1:45pm and caught a GOKL free bus five minutes later. A road closure forced us to stay on until the Pekeliling terminal, where we switched to the LRT and rode to Bandaraya for RM1.40 (about USD/EUR0.30). From there, we walked all the way home.

Looking Ahead

With our errands done, we’re now planning a road trip to my hometown at the end of August.

Stay tuned for that journey.
