MLK Day 6 │ Going Home: Baba Charlie • Lao Gan Bang

Melaka Day 6!

All good things must come to an end, and we woke up bright and early to pack our bags. We checked out of the Airbnb at 9:30am, hoping to end our Melaka trip the same way we started it — with breakfast at Odeon Western Food. As expected, it was closed for Chinese New Year.

We then drove a few kilometres to the original Warong Baba Low Café at Tengkera, but it was full. We tried Baba Charlie Café next, but it too was packed. So we headed to Lao Gan Bang Kopitiam at the opposite end of the row of shop houses.

I had a packet of Nasi Lemak, while Cat had her customary Fried Beehoon. With drinks, breakfast came to only RM10.00 (≈ USD/EUR2). I loved the Nasi Lemak so much that I bought six more packets to take away at RM2.00 each.

After breakfast, we walked back to Baba Charlie Café and bought RM63.00 (≈ USD15/EUR14) worth of Nyonya kuih.

The Drive Home

With our errands done, we set off on our drive back to Kuala Lumpur.

Just like our Penang trip, we pieced together highlights of our five days in Melaka into a short montage — a little keepsake of our stay that we hope you’ll enjoy.

The drive itself was uneventful, so do check out our previous vlog dedicated entirely to this calm three hour journey.

We reached home at 1:30pm and began unpacking.

Signing Off

With that, we end this series of vlogs on our trip to Melaka.

Stay tuned — we’ll be visiting Brendan in Kuching in a month’s time!

MKZ Day 6 │ DJI Action 3 Hyperlapse: 3 Hours in 21 Minutes

Melaka Day 6!

We finally began our drive back to Kuala Lumpur after leaving Baba Charlie Café.

Once we passed through the Ayer Keroh Toll Plaza, we drove for about an hour before exiting the North–South Expressway at the KLIA turnoff. From there, we continued along the ELITE Highway and made a quick pitstop at the Dengkil R&R. After stretching our legs, we refuelled Puteh at the nearby Petronas station and continued our journey.

We exited the ELITE Highway at the Putrajaya turnoff and entered the Maju Expressway (MEX), heading straight toward Kuala Lumpur.

This video showcases the entire three hour drive, captured in timelapse mode and condensed into twenty minutes.

Enjoy!

MLK Day 5 │ San Shu Gong • GravyBaby • Melaka River Cruise • Kook Thai

Melaka Day 5!

Our penultimate day in Melaka, and we finally managed to wake up early. We got ready, left the Airbnb at 8:55am, and hailed a Grab for RM11.00 (≈ USD3/EUR2) to the Melaka River Cruise ticketing office.

Although operations were supposed to start at 9:00am, the rain meant they temporarily suspended services until the weather improved.

Souvenir Run at San Shu Gong

Unbothered, we took a walk along the river and crossed the Tan Kim Seng Bridge to San Shu Gong. We picked up several bottles of kaya and a few packets of white coffee as souvenirs for our neighbours. Our little spree came to RM52.70 (≈ USD12/EUR11).

We then walked northeast along Lorong Hang Jebat to check if our favourite breakfast spot, Lung Ann Refreshments, was open — but being the third day of Chinese New Year, it was still closed.

We returned to San Shu Gong and went up to their mezzanine floor, only to find they served drinks but no food. So we continued southwest along Lorong Hang Jebat in search of breakfast.

Breakfast at GravyBaby

We stumbled upon GravyBaby and were immediately drawn to the riverside seating at the far end of the restaurant. We took a cosy couple’s table and ordered:

  • The Big English Breakfast
  • The San Francisco
  • Hot Latte
  • Hot Ginger Lemon Tea

Our riverside breakfast came to RM114.85 (≈ USD27/EUR25) — steep by our standards, but we consoled ourselves: special occasion, premium seats, and we’d probably skip lunch.

The River Cruise (Finally!)

An hour later, we emerged from GravyBaby and tried our luck again at the river cruise. This time, we were in luck — services had resumed. We bought our tickets for RM25.00 each (≈ USD6/EUR5).
Non Malaysians pay RM35.00 (≈ USD/EUR8).

After a 30 minute wait, we boarded the boat. We filmed the entire ride in timelapse mode — a fun, breezy journey we hope you’ll enjoy.

We disembarked at the Hard Rock Café Jetty, crossed the Tan Kim Seng Bridge, then crossed Jalan Laksamana and took a seat under a shady tree at Dutch Square. We indulged in some people watching while waiting for a bus.

Bus Ride & Back to the Airbnb

We caught Panorama Melaka Bus No. 17 at the Muzium Belia stop. For RM1.50 (≈ USD0.40/EUR0.30), it took us past Dataran Pahlawan, then to Ujong Pasir, before looping back and dropping us at Taman Hilir Kota.

We walked the remaining 650 metres to the Airbnb, stopping by the mini mart for bottled water. Back in the apartment, we pondered dinner plans — especially since we had skipped lunch after that massive breakfast.

Dinner at Kook Thai

In the evening, we walked across Jalan Syed Abdul Aziz, checking out Palsaik Korean BBQ and Wok & Pan, but long queues put us off.

We eventually settled on Kook Thai and ordered:

  • Grilled Pork (Moo Ping)
  • Minced Pork Omelette
  • Seafood Tomyam
  • 2 servings of White Rice

With drinks, dinner came to RM70.70 (≈ USD17/EUR15).

We then walked back across the street and returned to the Airbnb.

Heading Home Soon

Tomorrow, we’ll be driving back to Kuala Lumpur — and to be honest, we miss home terribly!

MLK Day 4 │ Xiang Ji Satay • Dutch Square • A Famosa • Haji Nasir Ikan Bakar

Melaka Day 4!

A day after Chinese New Year, we planned to finally go on a Melaka River Cruise. Unfortunately, we woke up close to 10:00am, and by the time we left the Airbnb it was already past 11:00am.

We walked out of Imperio Residence to catch a Panorama Melaka bus to Jonker Street from the flats at Taman Hilir Kota 1. The bus arrived soon enough, and for RM1.50 (≈ USD/EUR0.30) each, it took us to Jalan Kubu.

We got off right in front of the Jonker Walk archway.

Satay at Xiang Ji

We strolled along Jalan Tokong, then turned left onto Jalan Portugis, heading north until we reached Xiang Ji Satay House.

It was the day after Chinese New Year, and they were swamped with takeaway orders. We were lucky to arrive before they stopped accepting new ones. This place is one of Brendan’s favourites, so we’ll definitely bring him here next time.

We ordered 30 sticks of satay, a serving of Nasi Himpit, and Coca Cola for RM45.00 (≈ USD11/EUR10).

River Walk & Street Art

We walked back south along Jalan Portugis, turned left onto Jalan Tokong, then left again onto Jalan Hang Kasturi. We slipped into a small alley where the Melaka Street Art (The Well) murals were located.

At the end of the alley, we emerged onto Jalan Kampung Pantai, then ducked into another alley that led us straight to the riverside. We crossed the Kampung Jawa Bridge and turned left, hoping to visit Sin See Tai, but it was closed.

We continued walking along Jalan Bunga Raya, then over to Jalan Laksamana, heading southwest until we reached Dutch Square — the Melaka Clock Tower, The Stadthuys, Queen Victoria’s Fountain, and Christ Church all glowing in the afternoon sun.

From there, we walked along Jalan Kota to its very end and arrived at the iconic A’ Famosa.

Cooling Down at Dataran Pahlawan

The weather was scorching, so we dashed into Dataran Pahlawan through the north entrance and exited through the south. We then slipped into Starbucks to cool down with drinks for half an hour.

After that, we walked back into the mall and made our way to the east entrance, where we hailed a Grab for RM9.00 (≈ USD/EUR2) back to the Airbnb.

Evening at Alai

A thunderstorm rolled in, and Grab cars were scarce. Eventually, we hopped into Puteh and drove east along Jalan Padang Temu and Jalan Permatang Pasir toward Alai, planning an early dinner at Haji Nasir Ikan Bakar — one of our long time favourites.

Outdoor dining wasn’t allowed due to unpredictable weather, so we couldn’t capture the sunset. Still, we browsed the fresh seafood and settled on:

  • Grilled Siakap (Asian Sea Bass)
  • Prawns in Sambal Sauce
  • Fried Flour Dipped Calamari
  • Salted Kailan

With drinks, dinner came to RM65.00 (≈ USD15/EUR14) — always good value, always delicious.

We then drove back to the Airbnb.

Tomorrow…

We are firm in our resolve to catch a river cruise tomorrow morning.

Stay tuned!

MKZ Day 3 │ 200th Video Special! Melaka River Walk • Perigi Hang Li Po • Amigo Steak

Melaka Day 3!

It was Chinese New Year, and at the stroke of midnight a burst of fireworks erupted across Melaka. From our Airbnb, we had a spectacular view of the pyrotechnics lighting up the night sky.

With nothing planned — and with rain pouring all morning — we slept in.

I woke up at 9:00am and worked on videos from the past few days. We eventually left the Airbnb at 11:00am and hailed a Grab for RM9.00 (≈ USD/EUR2) to Waronk Melaka, hoping for brunch. It was closed. In hindsight, we should have checked Google — it only opens at noon.

A Walk, A DOS, and Brunch

We began an impromptu walk along the Melaka River and soon arrived at Arang Café. We took our seats, only to be hit with another denial of service — “You cannot sit here.” Not exactly the warmest greeting. We walked away, hoping the bespectacled waitress finds more courtesy in the future.

Still hungry, we continued our search and settled on Nasi Kandar Ali Akbar.

  • I had Nasi Kandar with Fried Chicken
  • Cat had Nasi Kandar with Curry Chicken
  • Drinks + a banana

Total: RM34.50 (≈ USD8/EUR7).

With our perut (bellies) sorted, we continued walking along the river until we reached The Shore. The elastic on Cat’s socks had given up, so we headed into The Shore Shopping Gallery and found a replacement. Crisis averted.

Afternoon Walkabout

We walked along Lorong Bendahara, past the old Ramada Plaza Hotel, and waited for a Panorama Melaka Bus in front of Hotel Orkid. A #17 bus approached but didn’t stop. Traffic toward Red Square was getting gnarlier by the minute, so we decided to walk instead.

We turned left onto Jalan Munshi Abdullah, passed the old Emperor Hotel, and eventually reached the Old Well of Hang Li Po — now strangely renamed Sultan’s Well. We explored the well and the neighbouring Poh San Teng Temple before trying to hail a Grab.

No drivers were available, so we kept walking along Jalan Munshi Abdullah and tried again. After several attempts, we finally secured a Grab for RM9.00 back to the Airbnb.

Staying In for the Evening

Back at the Airbnb, we read news reports of heavy traffic all around Melaka. We debated whether to walk out for dinner or order GrabFood.

In the end, we walked across the street to Amigo Steak & Grill, another favourite of ours. We scanned the QR code and ordered:

  • Fish & Chips
  • Mushroom Chicken
  • Extra Large Honey Dew Juice with Milk
  • Extra Large Carrot Juice

Total: RM72.95 (≈ USD17/EUR16).

Dinner was excellent, though we made a mental note to share the extra large fruit juice next time. We then walked back across the street to the Airbnb.

Looking Ahead

Weather permitting, we might catch a river cruise tomorrow morning.

Stay tuned!

MKZ Day 2 │ Nasi Lemak Royale • Kocik Heritage • Jonker Walk

Melaka Day 2!

It was the Eve of Chinese New Year, and we slept in. We emerged from our Airbnb late in the morning and decided to take a random drive. We eventually found ourselves along Jalan Hang Tuah and thought we’d give Nasi Lemak Royale Kedah a try.

Cat ordered the Nasi Royale (yellow rice) with regular fried chicken, while I had the same rice with Honey Fried Chicken. With drinks, our brunch came to RM22.70 (≈ USD/EUR5).

I had bought a pair of shorts the day before and wanted a tailor to fix a small issue, so we spent the next hour driving around. Being Chinese New Year Eve, every tailor was closed.

We spent the entire afternoon at the Airbnb while I worked on videos from the past day or so.

Sa Cap Meh Dinner

As evening approached, we hailed a Grab for RM14.00 (≈ USD/EUR3) to Kocik Heritage for our Sa Cap Meh (Chinese New Year Eve) dinner.

Our reservation was at 6:00pm, and since we were early, we took an impromptu walk along Jalan Tun Tan Cheng Lock. We walked northwest to its end, looped around to Jalan Kubu, then onto Jalan Hang Jebat, and into Jonker Walk.

We soaked in the familiar sights, walked southeast for a few hundred metres, turned right onto Jalan Hang Lekir, then back onto Jalan Tun Tan Cheng Lock and returned to Kocik Heritage — now open for business.

Our dinner was a sumptuous affair, and it deserved a vlog of its own, so do check it out.

Night Walk Through Jonker

After dinner, we continued our impromptu walk. We headed back along Jalan Hang Lekir, then turned right onto Jalan Hang Jebat, right into the heart of Jonker Walk. With the help of the DJI Extension Rod, we hoisted our camera above the crowd and captured clear shots of the bustling night market.

We walked all the way to the end of Jalan Hang Jebat, past the Melaka Zero Mile roundabout, and continued onto Jalan Kota. The elaborately decorated rickshaws were doing roaring business — a colourful, noisy, unmistakably Melaka sight.

We continued south along Jalan Kota until we reached Dataran Pahlawan. We stepped into Brands Outlet to look at some T shirts Cat had noticed the day before. We walked out with a pair of couple T shirts — because that’s how we roll. No judgement, please.

We also couldn’t resist the 3 T shirts for RM55 (≈ USD13/EUR12) offer.

With our mini shopping spree done, we hailed a Grab for RM6.00 (≈ USD/EUR1.30) back to the Airbnb.

Fireworks at Midnight

As midnight approached, our Airbnb window lit up with fireworks bursting across the Melaka skyline — a sight we’ll share in our next vlog.

Goodnight!

MKZ Day 2 │ Kocik Heritage • Sa Cap Meh Dinner

Melaka Day 2!

We had made reservations for our Chinese New Year Eve dinner — known to Hokkiens as Sa Cap Meh or Thirtieth Night — at Kocik Heritage Nyonya Restaurant along Jalan Tun Tan Cheng Lock, near Jonker Walk. Knowing it would be one of the busiest nights of the year, we booked well in advance.

A long time ago, Kocik Kitchen used to be our go to spot for Nyonya cuisine in the Jonker Street area. When it closed, we had to look elsewhere.

During my work posting in Melaka, we often stayed at the Ramada Plaza Hotel and enjoyed meals at Manis J, a Nyonya restaurant nearby. Sadly, the pandemic forced Manis J to close last year.

We kept in touch with its proprietress, Jennifer (the “J” in Manis J, we assume), and learned that her family had taken over the old Kocik Kitchen and rebranded it as Kocik Heritage.

Sa Cap Meh Dinner

As evening approached, we hailed a Grab to Kocik Heritage for our reunion dinner. We arrived early, so we took a short stroll before returning a little after 6:00pm.

Stepping inside felt like stepping back in time. Very little had changed — the old world charm, the architecture, the layout — all still intact. For those of us who grew up around Peranakan culture, it felt wonderfully familiar.

(And yes, Kocik means “youngest auntie” in the local dialect.)

Our dinner set included:

  • Assam Fish
  • Ayam Pongteh
  • Sambal Prawn
  • Steamed Ladies’ Finger with Sambal Belacan
  • Ngoh Hiang (Fried Meat Rolls)
  • Mixed Fried Vegetables
  • Dessert of the Day

With drinks and cendol, the bill came to RM164.00 (≈ USD38/EUR35) — very reasonable, especially considering that many restaurants in Kuala Lumpur charge that amount per person for Chinese New Year Eve dinners.

Wrapping Up

That concludes our vlog on Kocik Heritage. If you’re ever in the area, do pay them a visit to experience authentic Nyonya cuisine served in authentic Nyonya surroundings.

A lovely Sa Cap Meh indeed!

MKZ Day 1 │ Dataran Pahlawan • Imperio Residence • Seri Sahabat

Melaka Day 1!

We woke up at 5:00am and were on the road an hour later. Apart from a few side swiping morons, the drive was largely uneventful. We reached the Ayer Keroh toll gates at about 8:30am. If you haven’t already, do check out our previous blog dedicated entirely to this peaceful two hour drive.

Breakfast at Odeon Western Food

First order of business in Melaka was breakfast, so we headed straight to Odeon Western Food in Melaka Raya. We scanned the menu and quickly settled on their convenient breakfast sets — Cat ordered Set A, while I opted for Set B with an extra sausage.

With drinks, breakfast came to RM17.50 (≈ USD/EUR4).

Killing Time at Dataran Pahlawan

We then drove to Dataran Pahlawan and parked in the basement, hoping to relax at a café. Unfortunately, nothing was open at 9:00am, so we walked out and found a small stall nearby for drinks.

At 10:00am, we re entered the mall and went looking for a manicurist — again, no luck. So we treated ourselves instead to a foot & shoulder massage at Thai Wadee Reflexology for RM85.00 per person (≈ USD20/EUR18).

An hour and a half later, we felt completely rejuvenated.

Lunch at Wong Kok Char Chan Teng

We continued our walkabout before eventually settling on Wong Kok Char Chan Teng for lunch. We ordered:

  • Chinese 5 Spice Fried Rice — RM13.60
  • Honey BBQ Pork with Fried Rice — RM14.90
  • Fruit juices — RM7.50 each

Total: RM50.45 (≈ USD12/EUR11).

After lunch, we left Dataran Pahlawan in search of bottled water and eventually found a 99 Speedmart along Jalan Ong Kim Wee. With half an hour left before check in time, we made our way to Imperio Residence.

Checking In

We collected the room key and paid a RM100.00 deposit (≈ USD23/EUR22) at the host’s counter in Tower B. We then drove up to Level 7 and took the elevator to Level 26.

Our home for the next 6 days — a cosy studio with kitchenette and washer/dryer — cost us RM897.18 (≈ USD210/EUR193), or RM179.50 (≈ USD42/EUR39) per night. A great deal for Melaka.

Evening Nap & Supper

Since we had been up since 5:00am, we were fast asleep by 5:00pm. Four hours later, we woke up and drove to the Bunga Raya area. After picking up some provisions at another 99 Speedmart, we had supper at Seri Sahabat.

Our meal of Naan, Tandoori Chicken, and Fried Beehoon, with drinks, came to RM22.50 (≈ USD/EUR5).

We then headed back to Imperio Residence, hoping for an early night — eager for a proper walkabout tomorrow morning.

DJI Action 3 Tests │ Bestari Sri Hartamas • Jovis Music PLT

We're Going on a Drive Around!

It had been two weeks since we returned from Penang. In that time, we managed to get our condo repainted, while I resumed work on an important project at the office.

The weekend arrived — and so did the replacement suction cup mount for our DJI Action 3, which had broken earlier. Since we already planned to visit our friend Jack the master luthier to pick up a couple of my guitars, we figured it was the perfect chance to test the Action 3’s hyperlapse mode.

Breakfast Before Guitars

We arrived at Jack’s place before 10:00am, so we walked over to Nasi Kandar Bestari for breakfast.

  • I had Dosai
  • Cat had Roti Canai
  • Drinks for both of us

Breakfast came to RM11.70 (≈ USD/EUR3).

With our bellies sorted, we walked back to Jack’s and picked up the guitars — but not before giving both a proper sound test.

Fueling Up & Heading Home

We then drove to a nearby Petronas station to fill up Puteh before making our way back to the condo.

Since it was the last weekend before Chinese New Year, we decided it would be wise to stay home — the roads would be packed with last minute shoppers.

Looking Ahead

We’ll be celebrating Chinese New Year in Melaka, so please stay tuned!

PEN Day 7 │ Going Home!

Penang Day 7!

Our final morning in Penang. We woke up at 6:00am, checked out of Hotel Penaga soon after, and hailed a Grab to Queensbay Mall for RM30.00 (≈ USD7/EUR6), where we would once again be taking the Aeroline bus back to Kuala Lumpur.

Clichéd as it sounds, time really does fly when we’re having fun — slipped disc notwithstanding. We had an amazing six days in Penang, and we were genuinely sad to leave. We were so caught up in the moment that we even forgot it was New Year’s Day.

To commemorate our stay, we pieced together highlights of our six days into a short montage in the video below — we hope you’ll enjoy it.

The Journey Home

We boarded the bus at 8:30am and departed five minutes later. The journey was largely uneventful. Two hours in, we stopped at the Petronas station in Simpang Pulai for a quick biological break before continuing on.

Two hours after that, we were back within Kuala Lumpur’s city limits and arrived at Corus Hotel at 1:05pm.

Signing Off

With that, we conclude this series of vlogs on our Penang trip.

Please stay tuned — we’ll be heading to Melaka in a few weeks for Chinese New Year!
