TGG Day 5 │ Recap

A Productive Final Morning

Today was our fifth and final day in Kuala Terengganu, and we hoped to make it a productive one — tying up loose ends and doing all the things we had planned.

We headed to Pasar Kedai Payang bright and early for our customary market hunt, but first stopped by the food court for a comforting bowl of Laksa Kuah Putih. With breakfast sorted, we began our market hunt, which lasted for the better part of an hour and a half.

A Farewell Visit

After the market, we stopped by my late Aunty’s house to check on things and to bid a quiet, fond farewell. We promised ourselves that we would return in a month or so to continue the spring cleaning — a promise we intend to keep.

A Walk Down Memory Lane

On the way back to the hotel, we made a spontaneous detour to visit my old primary school, Sekolah Rendah Sultan Sulaiman 2. And boy, how it has changed. The buildings, the grounds, the atmosphere — everything felt familiar yet different, like a memory seen through new eyes.

Rest and a Light Lunch

Knackered, we returned to the hotel and rested before walking downstairs for a light lunch at Plan A. It was the perfect mid day pause before the evening’s adventure.

ICT Redemption at Kampung Tok Jembal

Later in the afternoon, we picked Vinodh up and headed to Kampung Tok Jembal for another attempt at Ikan Celup Tepung (ICT). This time, we made sure to be early and arrived before 5pm.

We ordered a full seafood feast — flour dipped fish, prawns, and squid — along with Pisang Goreng and several plates of Keropok Lekor for good measure. It was indulgent, delicious, and the perfect way to celebrate our final evening in Kuala Terengganu.

Sunset at Uptown Kontena

After an hour and a half of gorging, we made our way to Uptown Kontena, where we spent the evening enjoying the cool breeze and watching the sunset. A simple, beautiful way to close the chapter on this trip.

Until the Next Adventure

All good things must come to an end, and this video marks the conclusion of our Kuala Terengganu series. We hope to be back soon — to fulfil the promise we made to my late Aunty, and to bring you along on another East Coast adventure.

TGG Day 5 │ Warung Bidara POKMAN

Making Up for Yesterday

Eager to make up for yesterday’s disappointment with the elusive Ikan Celup Tepung (ICT), we picked Vinodh up again at 4:30pm and, within half an hour, found ourselves back in Kampung Tok Jembal.

This time, we were single minded in our mission.

The Perfect Spot — Beside the Runway

We headed straight to the ICT stall that Vinodh usually visits whenever he needs to pick up his mother from Sultan Mahmud Airport. Located just north of the runway, Warung Bidara Pokman is the perfect vantage point — Vinodh would sit here, enjoy ICT, and watch his mother’s flight land before driving over to fetch her.

Genius, right?

A Feast Fit for a Finale

We went a little overboard and ordered a plate of everything they had:

  • Flour dipped fish
  • Flour dipped prawns
  • Flour dipped squid
  • Pisang Goreng (Banana Fritters)
  • Several plates of Keropok Lekor — because why not

Vinodh was truly astonished by the amount of food we ordered, and even more amazed that we managed to (almost) finish everything. You could say we ended our Kuala Terengganu trip with a bang.

The Damage

Our feast came to RM77 (≈ USD18/EUR16). Considering how much we ordered, it was actually very reasonable.

Our Verdict

If you’re looking for an authentic ICT experience, we highly recommend Warung Bidara Pokman. Great food, great atmosphere, and a runway view you won’t get anywhere else.

TGG Day 5 │ Restoran Plan A

Resting After the Market

We returned to the hotel after our market hunt at Pasar Kedai Payang and rested for a bit. Since we had plans with Vinodh later in the evening to try our luck with Ikan Celup Tepung (ICT), we decided to keep lunch light and simple.

A Convenient Choice

Located just beside our hotel, Plan A was the obvious choice. We had dinner here two days ago but didn’t record any videos then — so this time, we made sure to showcase the café properly.

Wanting to keep things easy, we ordered:

  • Grilled Chicken Chop (for the Millennial)
  • Bun with Kaya and Butter
  • Egg Mayo Sandwich
  • and beverages all around

The Damage

Our meal came to RM46.50 (≈ USD11/EUR10). A little pricey by local Kuala Terengganu standards, but definitely on par with Kuala Lumpur café prices. Given the convenience and the quality, we felt it was fair.

Our Verdict

We highly recommend Plan A if you’re looking for a quick, easy, and comfortable café right in the heart of Kuala Terengganu. It’s perfect for a light meal before a busy evening — or in our case, before another attempt at the elusive ICT.

TGG Day 5 │ PASAR KEDAI PAYANG Market Hunt

Our Final Day Begins

It was our fifth and final day in Kuala Terengganu, and we planned to end our trip with a proper market hunt at Pasar Kedai Payang. The Millennial, fully aware of our enthusiasm when it comes to market hunts, politely declined our invitation — so it was just the two of us this morning.

Remembering the Old Market

The former Pasar Kedai Payang (now under renovation just next door) was once divided into two levels:

  • Ground floor — the wet market, selling fish, vegetables, traditional cakes, and all manner of kitchen essentials.
  • Upper floor — famous for Terengganu batik, silk, brocade cloth, and woven songket. This floor also housed the food court that used to serve my favourite version of Nasi Minyak.

It was a compact, bustling, vertical market — chaotic in the best possible way.

Exploring the New Pasar Kedai Payang

The new Pasar Kedai Payang has gone horizontal. The spacious, warehouse like main annex now sells all kinds of dry goods: keropok, batik, songket, souvenirs, and more. The food court sits at the back, but for some reason, I could not find my favourite Nasi Minyak anymore — a small disappointment, but perhaps it has simply moved elsewhere.

Next to the main annex, on the right, is a smaller single storey building housing the wet market: fish, meat, vegetables, and fruits. It felt a little cramped compared to the old layout, but the atmosphere was lively and familiar all the same.

Still Learning the New Layout

This was only our second visit to the new Pasar Kedai Payang, and we’re still getting used to its expanded footprint and reorganised sections. We hope that our walkabout video captured the essence of the place — the colours, the sounds, the energy, and the spirit of a market that remains close to our hearts, even as it evolves.

TGG Day 5 │ AISAH AWANG Gerai 27

A Market Hunt to End Our Trip

It was our fifth and final day in Kuala Terengganu, and we planned to cap off our trip with a proper market hunt at Pasar Kedai Payang. Before starting the hunt, we made our way to the food court for breakfast.

The Millennial declined our invitation — so it was just the two of us on this quiet morning sojourn.

Breaking the Nasi Dagang Streak

For the first time this trip, we finally had something other than Nasi Dagang for breakfast. We stopped at an unnamed stall, though we noticed a small signboard that read “Aisah Binti Awang”, with stall number 27.

A few days earlier, we had Laksa Kuah Putih at On The Way, so we decided to try the same dish here as well.

The Verdict

It was a different but equally good take on our favourite local noodle dish — lighter in some ways, richer in others — and we were pleasantly surprised. It’s always nice when a simple stall delivers something memorable.

The Damage

Together with a round of beverages for both of us, the total came to an astonishing RM16.50 (≈ USD3.90/EUR3.50). Truly the everyday food for the everyday man.

Onward With the Market Hunt

With breakfast sorted, we continued our final day adventure at Pasar Kedai Payang.

TGG Day 4 │ Recap

An Early Start at NDAT

We woke up incredibly early this morning and headed to the Nasi Dagang Atas Tol (NDAT) 3 outlet at Jalan Hiliran, Kampung Tok Ku — the nearest branch to us. Online reviews warned of long queues, so we made the effort to arrive before 6:30am.

We are still not sure if there is such a thing as a “better” Nasi Dagang, or if it’s simply a case of different styles, each good in its own way. But NDAT certainly held its own.

A Day of Hard Work

The rest of the day was spent at my late Aunty’s house, where we gave her kitchen and downstairs toilet a thorough washing and cleaning. It was tiring but meaningful work.

Afterwards, we headed to a nearby laundromat and had lunch at a café while waiting for the laundry to finish. We didn’t shoot any videos throughout the afternoon — we were simply too knackered. Once everything was sorted, we returned to the hotel and took a long, much needed nap.

The ICT Hunt That Wasn’t

Late in the evening, we made plans with my good old friend Vinodh to have dinner at one of the Ikan Celup Tepung (ICT) stalls in Seberang Takir. Unfortunately, we left the hotel at dusk, picked Vinodh up, and by the time we reached Seberang Takir, most ICT stalls had already closed for the day.

Undeterred, we drove up and down the coast from Seberang Takir to Tok Jembal for about an hour before finally calling it quits and heading back to Kuala Terengganu town.

A Late Night Rescue

Vinodh then suggested his favourite late night hangout — a place that served an excellent version of the local Nasi Minyak. It turned out to be the perfect way to end the evening after a long, exhausting day.

Looking Ahead

Tomorrow will be our fifth and final day, and we hope to make it a productive one. A market hunt is definitely on the cards.

Stay tuned for the final chapter of our Kuala Terengganu journey.

TGG Day 4 │ Kedai Makan MYM

Chasing ICT in Seberang Takir

We had made plans with my good old friend Vinodh to have dinner at one of the famous Ikan Celup Tepung (ICT) spots in Seberang Takir. Unfortunately, we left the hotel a little late, picked Vinodh up, and by the time we reached Seberang Takir, dusk had already settled in.

We drove around the area for almost an hour, circling one ICT stall after another, but luck simply wasn’t on our side. Eventually, we called it quits and headed back toward Kuala Terengganu town.

A Late Night Suggestion

On the way back, Vinodh suggested we try his favourite late night hangout — a place that served an excellent version of the local Nasi Minyak, quite different from the ones commonly found on the West Coast of Peninsula Malaysia.

That place was Kedai Makan MYM, located near Pasar Kedai Payang and Istana Maziah.

Nasi Minyak Like No Other

We placed our orders and sat down to enjoy a plate of Nasi Minyak that was truly special — fragrant, flavourful, and unmistakably Terengganu in character. It was different from the West Coast style, but amazing in its own right.

This time around, we can’t quote the exact price for four, because Vinodh graciously footed the bill. But believe us when we say: it wouldn’t have breached RM10 per person.

Our Verdict

If you’re looking for a late night meal in Kuala Terengganu, do pay Kedai Makan MYM a visit. You won’t be disappointed.

TGG Day 4 │ Nasi Dagang ATAS TOL

A Morning Mission

There is a long running debate about which Nasi Dagang is the best in Kuala Terengganu. This morning, we set out to see whether there truly is a “better” Nasi Dagang — or if it’s simply a case of different styles, each delicious in its own way.

We woke up incredibly early and headed to the Nasi Dagang Atas Tol (NDAT) Tol 3 outlet at Jalan Hiliran, Kampung Tok Ku — the nearest branch to us. We had read online that long queues form quickly, so we took the initiative to arrive before 6:30am.

Much has been said about NDAT, and we were excited to finally try it for ourselves. The Millennial, after a long night of assignments, decided to give NDAT a miss — to his loss.

The Verdict

We ordered, paid, and sat down to enjoy what we consider the second best Nasi Dagang in all of Terengganu.

We agree with Vinodh’s conclusion:

  • NDAT’s gravy is sweeter
  • The presentation is more polished

But in terms of authenticity of taste, we still feel that Kak Pah’s gravy holds a slight edge. From what we’ve observed, it seems my generation leans toward Kak Pah, while the younger crowd prefers NDAT.

Perhaps it all boils down to the “sweet tooth” factor.

The Damage

The entire breakfast — including beverages for the both of us (Brendan was still asleep) — came to RM14.00 (≈ USD/EUR3). Very reasonable, especially considering NDAT is now a household name.

Onward With the Day

With breakfast settled, we were ready to continue our mission in Kuala Terengganu.

More updates to come.

TGG Day 3 │ Recap

Breakfast Before the Real Work

The real reason we planned this trip back to Kuala Terengganu was to tend to my late Aunty’s house. As soon as inter state travel was allowed again, we made a solemn promise to return, straighten out her home, and see if we could make it a place of warmth once more.

But before any of that could happen, we needed sustenance — and where else would we go but Kak Pah Nasi Dagang. For the second morning in a row, we enjoyed her signature Nasi Dagang, a comforting start before a long day ahead.

On the way to the house, we stopped by Mr DIY to pick up some much needed supplies.

Three Hours of Hard Labour

A gruelling but satisfying three hours later, we finally stepped back and realised we had worked straight past lunchtime. The front porch was cleared, the space felt lighter, and although there was still much to do, it was a meaningful start.

A Well Earned Treat at OTW

Famished and exhausted, we made our way to On the Way (OTW) to reward ourselves after all that back breaking work. OTW did not disappoint — the food was delicious, comforting, and exactly what we needed after the morning’s emotional and physical effort.

Rest and Recovery

After lunch, we returned to the hotel and rested. We were completely knackered, with no energy left for filming or editing. Dinner was a simple affair — we only had the strength to walk downstairs to a nearby café.

A Day Well Spent

It was a tiring day, but a meaningful one. We honoured our promise, made progress at my Aunty’s house, and gave ourselves the space to rest afterwards.

More updates to come as our mission continues.

TGG Day 3 │ Restoran ON THE WAY

A Gruelling Morning, A Satisfying Result

We spent a gruelling but satisfying three hours at my Aunty’s house, clearing and sorting out the front porch. By the time we were done, lunchtime had quietly slipped past us. Not wanting to dwell on the emotional weight of the morning, we headed straight to Kampung Cina in search of a good meal.

Lunch at On the Way

We made our way to a local eatery called On the Way, a place we had heard countless good things about. Our hopes were high — and we were mighty glad we were not disappointed.

Famished after all that hard labour, we ordered:

  • Laksa Kuah Putih
  • Laksa Kuah Merah
  • Laksam Kuah Putih
  • Cheesy Fries
  • Rojak Betik
  • and a multitude of beverages and fruit juices

And just to set the record straight: despite someone’s insistence, the Rojak Betik here does not resemble Ceranang in any way. My favourite Ceranang remains unmatched.

The Damage

We knew that eating at On the Way wouldn’t be cheap — and partly as a treat after the morning’s hard work, we were prepared for it. The total came to RM76.20 (≈ USD18/EUR16), which felt fair for the variety and quality of dishes we enjoyed.

Our Verdict

We highly recommend On the Way if you’re looking for delicious, authentic Terengganu cuisine. Just don’t expect to find Ceranang here.

TGG Day 3 │ Spring Cleaning!

Returning to Aunty’s House

Breakfast sorted, we made our way to Jalan Sultan Ismail and to the house left behind by my late Aunty. She passed away of natural causes last year, and because she lived alone, her home had been left unattended for more than a year. We had not stepped inside since her funeral — every plan to return was delayed by the pandemic.

This time, as soon as inter state travel was allowed again, we made a solemn promise to visit her home, straighten things out, and see if we could make it a home once more.

A Quiet, Heavy Task

There isn’t much more we can say. The emotions were mixed — sadness, responsibility, and a quiet determination to honour her memory by caring for the space she once called home.

Let the Footage Tell the Story

Words feel insufficient for moments like these, so we hope the time lapse footage we captured will help tell our story — the work, the effort, and the love behind this visit.

TGG Day 3 │ KAK PAH Nasi Dagang

Searching for the “Best”

There has always been a lively debate about which Nasi Dagang is the best in Kuala Terengganu. This morning, we set out to see whether there truly is a “better” Nasi Dagang — or if it’s simply a case of different styles, each good in its own way.

For us, Kak Pah has been the gold standard for as long as we can remember. To hear that there might be a pretender to her throne actually bodes well for the Nasi Dagang loving community. Still, it’s hard for us to imagine anyone dethroning her.

Breakfast With the Queen

We ordered, paid, and sat down to enjoy what we still consider the best Nasi Dagang in all of Terengganu. The flavours were familiar, comforting, and exactly as we remembered.

The entire breakfast — including beverages — came to RM21.00 (≈ USD5/EUR4), which we felt was still very reasonable given Kak Pah’s long standing reputation.

Fuel for the Day Ahead

We needed to keep our strength up, as we would be hard at work later in the day.

So please stay tuned — the real mission of our trip continues.

TGG Day 2 │ Recap

A Slow Start to the Morning

We meant to wake up early, but fatigue kept us in bed longer than expected. We finally began our morning walkabout at 8:30am, strolling the length of Kampung Cina before having breakfast at Pasar Kedai Payang. After making a loop around the market, we headed back to the hotel, then drove out to Batu Buruk beach for a very pleasant walk down memory lane.
Laundry Adventures (Not the Good Kind)

Back in town, we stopped at a laundromat near the hotel to get our laundry done.
Unfortunately, it turned into an unpleasant experience — the fussy proprietor hovered over us the entire time, watching every single thing we did. Social distancing seemed to be an alien concept for this pesky little man.

A Sweet Discovery

Once the laundry was done, we spotted a stall across the street selling the most delicious pisang goreng. It was so good that we enjoyed it a little too much — lunch was completely forgotten.

Dinner With an Old Friend

Dinner, however, was a grand affair. My dear old friend Vinodh invited us to Restoran Ocean, where we spent hours catching up and reminiscing about our days growing up in Kuala Terengganu. Good food, good company, and good memories — the perfect way to end the evening.

Tomorrow’s Mission

Tomorrow will be an important but tiring day, as we will finally be fulfilling our true purpose for returning to Kuala Terengganu. Stay tuned for the next chapter.

TGG Day 2 │ Pantai Batu Buruk

The First Breath of Home

We arrived in Kuala Terengganu yesterday, but I only truly came home the moment I caught the first whiff of salt air at Pantai Batu Buruk.

Growing up here in the late 70s and early 80s, this beach was the centre of my world — socially, and even as part of my daily route to school. Others may wax lyrical about Batu Feringghi, Tanjung Bungah, Langkawi, Mersing and the rest, but in my (admittedly biased) mind, none of them hold a candle to the breathtaking beauty of Batu Buruk.

Matterhorn Beach and Old Memories

We began our little tour at Pantai Batu Burok 2, nicknamed Matterhorn Beach. This was where a group of misguided youths — ourselves included — tried the most horrid packet of menthol cigarettes for the first (and last) time.

Nearby stood the ruins of what was once a majestic complex of government quarters, where a friend used to live. Now it lies abandoned, a quiet reminder of how quickly time moves on. A shame, really.

Batu Buruk Proper

We then headed to Batu Buruk proper, and to our delight, we had the beach almost entirely to ourselves — no crowds, no triple parked cars, just the sea breeze and the sound of waves. It was a wonderfully peaceful Thursday afternoon.

And of course, no visit here would be complete without keropok lekor on the beach. We spent a good half hour doing just that, enjoying the simple pleasure of being back where so many childhood memories were made.

A Daily Ritual

We would return to this beach every single day for the entire duration of our stay in Kuala Terengganu. Such is my affinity — and my lifelong bond — with this magnificent stretch of coastline.

TGG Day 2 │ Warung KAK SAL Nasi Dagang

A Stop at the Market

A little over half an hour into our morning walkabout, we reached Pasar Kedai Payang and decided to explore the maze of food stalls. We were hoping for Nasi Dagang, and it didn’t take long before we found Warung Kak Sal serving exactly what we were looking for.

A Diminutive but Delightful Stall

Warung Kak Sal is a small, unassuming stall, but it offers a solid range of local favourites:

  • Nasi Dagang
  • Nasi Minyak
  • Pulut Kuning (or as we call it, Nasi Kunyit)
  • Nasi Ayam

We ordered two plates of Nasi Dagang, and from the stall next door, one plate of Nasi Minyak. To go with our meal, we added:

  • two glasses of Iced Tea
  • one Nescafe
  • one Kopi Radix

We sat down to enjoy our authentic Terengganu breakfast — simple, hearty, and thoroughly satisfying.

The Damage

The entire breakfast came to RM20.50 (≈ USD5/EUR4), which we felt was still very reasonably priced, especially for such a flavourful start to the day.

Back to the Walkabout

With breakfast out of the way, we resumed our morning walkabout, hoping to catch a boat across the river.

So please stay tuned for the next chapter.

TGG Day 2 │ Morning Walkabout

A Later Start Than Planned

We meant to rise early this morning, but the exertions of the previous day kept us in bed longer than expected. Still, we managed to leave the hotel a little after 8am to begin our morning walkabout.

Along Jalan Sultan Ismail and Kampung Cina

We walked west along Jalan Sultan Ismail, then turned north onto Jalan Kampung Cina. We covered the entire 1.5 kilometre stretch until we reached the new Pasar Besar Kedai Payang.

We didn’t explore the market in detail — we’re saving that for a dedicated video later. As for the name Payang, two theories exist:

  • It may come from the perahu payang (payang boat).
  • Or from the local dialect for Kedai Tempayang.

Breakfast and a Missed Boat

We had breakfast at Warung Kak Sal Nasi Dagang before continuing our walk. After eating, we headed to the jetty, hoping to take a small boat across the river to Seberang Takir.

Unfortunately, there were no boats in sight.

What was available were the river cruises — RM50 per person — which didn’t appeal to us. We were looking for the old bot penambang, the small ferry boats that used to shuttle locals across the river, not a fancy tourist speedboat.

Back to the Hotel

Defeated but not dejected, we resumed our walk south along Jalan Banggol. After about a kilometre, we reached our hotel once again.

More to Come

Thus ends our mini walkabout. Stay tuned for our full market hunt video at the Terengganu Central Market (Pasar Besar Kedai Payang) in the days to come.

TGG Day 1 │ Recap

The Long Drive East

We woke up at 6am and left our condominium by 7am. After a quick pitstop at the Temerloh R&R around 8:30am, we continued our drive, which was largely uneventful.

We reached Kuala Terengganu at about 12:30pm and headed straight to our first port of call — Restoran Chuan Kee, our all time favourite Hainanese Chicken Rice restaurant. We’ve written about it before, and it remains a must visit every time we return.

A Visit With Purpose

With lunch out of the way and time to spare before hotel check in, we drove to my late Aunty’s house. The true purpose of this trip was to visit her home, which had been left abandoned since her passing in July last year.

The house was in a sad state of neglect. To make matters worse, an inconsiderate neighbour had parked her car directly in front of the gate, partially blocking access — and she had left it there while she went on holiday.

We managed to find out who she was and left word with a relative. The relative contacted her, and she promised to move her car the following evening. We told ourselves we would return as soon as the car was gone so we could finally begin sprucing up the house.

Checking In

We then checked into ARENA Boutique Hotel, the beautifully refurbished hotel we covered in an earlier blog. After a short nap, we headed out at 6:30pm in search of dinner.

A Maddening Search for Food

Unfortunately, our first, second, and even third choice eateries were closed — either for the day or permanently, we couldn’t tell. After driving all over town, we eventually ended up near Sultan Mahmud Airport, where we stumbled upon Ridwan Café & Seafood.

We had a sumptuous dinner at a ridiculously low price, which we’ve blogged about separately, and then headed back to the hotel hoping for an early night.

Tomorrow’s Plan

Tomorrow, we plan to go on an early morning walkabout, so please stay tuned for the next chapter of our Kuala Terengganu trip.

TGG Day 1 │ RIDWAN Cafe & Seafood Kuala Terengganu

The Search for Dinner

It was a very maddening night. Most of the eateries on our list were either closed for the day — or closed for good. We left the hotel around 6:30PM, and after an hour and a half of driving across the width and breadth of Kuala Terengganu, we finally found ourselves at this seafood restaurant. Quite by chance, actually.

Located near Sultan Mahmud Airport, the place was run by a group of youths. Instead of idling their time away, they took matters into their own hands and started a business. Hats off to them — we were genuinely impressed.

A Simple, Satisfying Feast

We quickly scanned the menu and ordered Set A, which came with:

  • Siakap Tiga Rasa (Tri Flavoured Sea Bass)
  • Omelette
  • Two plates of white rice
  • Two glasses of Iced Tea

Since Brendan avoids seafood, he ordered Tom Yam Chicken with rice.

But all that driving must have made him extra hungry — he later added a plate of Padprik Chicken with rice as well.

We enjoyed our dinner immensely. The food was fresh, flavourful, and comforting after such a long, frustrating search.

The Damage

To our astonishment, the entire seafood (and chicken) feast came to a paltry RM43 (≈ USD10/EUR9).

For the quality, quantity, and taste, this place is a serious contender for the crown of “everyday food for the everyday man.”

A Night Saved

What began as a maddening evening ended on a high note — good food, good value, and a newfound appreciation for the hardworking youths keeping the local food scene alive.

TGG Day 1 │ ARENA Boutique Hotel Kuala Terengganu

A Landmark From Our Childhood

Growing up in Kuala Terengganu, Hotel Seri Hoover — known simply as Hoover to the locals — was always a prominent landmark. According to my father, the hotel had been around since the 1960s (or possibly earlier), and it was even one of the venues where his band performed. Long before I ever picked up the guitar, he was the family guitarist — and keeping with tradition, my son has taken up the instrument too.

A Fall From Grace

With time, Hoover naturally fell into decay. By the early 2000s, it had become a shadow of its former self. One review from that era described it as a hotel to be used “only as a last resort” — with dim corridors, echoing hallways, poor TV reception, dingy furniture, and even exposed wiring where light fixtures should have been. It was the kind of description that made you wince, especially if you remembered its glory days.

A Phoenix Rises

Everything changed in 2019, when the hotel was completely renovated, refurbished, and reborn as Arena Boutique Hotel. My parents stayed here some time ago and had nothing but good things to say — so this time, it was finally our turn.

And we have to agree:

From the ashes of Seri Hoover rose the Phoenix that is now ARENA Boutique Hotel Kuala Terengganu.

Our Stay

We were upgraded from a Deluxe King to a Premium King Room at no extra cost, while Brendan was perfectly happy with his Superior Single Room. We initially booked four nights, but ended up extending for one more. For the final night, Brendan was bumped up to a Premium King Room as well, so all of us could stay on the same floor.

The rooms were comfortable, modern, and well appointed — we had absolutely no complaints. And the location? Perfect. Right in the heart of Kuala Terengganu.

The Damage

For two rooms over five nights, the total came to RM998 (≈ USD238/EUR212). For the comfort, convenience, and quality we enjoyed, we consider that a real steal.

Our Verdict

We wholeheartedly recommend Arena Boutique Hotel to anyone looking for a clean, comfortable, and centrally located stay in Kuala Terengganu. It’s wonderful to see a beloved landmark not just restored, but transformed into something even better.

TGG Day 1 │ CHUAN KEE Chicken Rice

Back to Where It All Began

When Cat and I first got married in 1998, we stayed with my parents — just a few hundred metres away from Restoran Chuan Kee. It became our default Friday destination (Terengganu’s weekend) after Mass, and over the years it grew into one of our most cherished routines.

So as always, the moment we arrived in Kuala Terengganu, Chuan Kee became our first port of call.

Familiar Faces, Familiar Warmth

Nothing much has changed. The proprietor greeted us with the same warm smile, as though we had never left Kuala Terengganu. His wife was excited to see us after all these years and took some time to chat and catch up with Cat. It felt like stepping back into a memory — comforting, familiar, and deeply grounding.

The Usual Order

We ordered our usual platter of roasted chicken (serving for three persons). The proprietor remembered our preferences and generously added extra chicken skin and gizzard, just the way we liked it.

The Verdict

After 11 long years, the Hainanese Chicken Rice here remains as excellent as ever. In our books, it is still THE best chicken rice shop in Kuala Terengganu — bar none.

And the damage?

With a round of Iced Chinese Tea for everyone and a good strong cuppa for me, the total came to an astonishing RM22.70 (≈ USD6/EUR5). This is why Chuan Kee remains the very definition of everyday food for the everyday man.

We just wish it weren’t 450 kilometres away.

Sunday Stroll │ SUNGEI WANG Plaza

Back at Sungei Wang Plaza

Happy National Recovery Plan (NRP) Phase 4, Kuala Lumpur!

Hardly a day after our walkabout at Sunway Putra Mall, we found ourselves strolling once again — this time through the familiar alleyways and walkways of Sungei Wang Plaza.

We started the morning with breakfast at Kopi Club, after which Brendan headed up to the first floor for his appointment at AJ Sense Salon. Meanwhile, we made our way to the ground floor for our next errand: Eye Smart Vision.

A Quick Visit to Jimmy

Cat had an old pair of spectacles that needed new lenses, and naturally, we only had Jimmy in mind for the job. We’ve been coming to him for years, and his workmanship has never failed us.

Jimmy estimated it would take an hour, so we resumed our stroll around the mall.

A Walk Through History

Established in 1977, Sungei Wang Plaza was the second shopping centre built in Kuala Lumpur after Ampang Park. Many from the older generation remember it fondly as one of the city’s most iconic places to visit.

Before Sungei Wang, the site was home to the Shaw Brothers’ BB Plaza, a beloved amusement centre where a young Teresa Teng once performed at the age of ten.

In the late 70s and 80s, Sungei Wang was synonymous with fashion, food, and beauty. It was the epicentre of La La Culture and an entertainment paradise — complete with an Olympic size ice skating rink, bumper cars, a game arcade, a discotheque hall, and Malaysia’s first indoor cinema with 1,700 seats.

It was also the venue for fashion shows, beauty contests, the annual Campus King and Queen, the Lantern Parade, meet and greet concerts, and festive countdowns. During major Chinese festivals, a full Chinese Opera stage would be set up on the rooftop.

“If you have not been to Sungei Wang Plaza, you have not been to Kuala Lumpur.”
— A popular phrase in the 1980s

Errands Completed

Within the promised hour, we returned to Eye Smart Vision and found Jimmy already waiting with Cat’s newly refurbished spectacles. With that done, we made our way to the basement car park, hopped into Alfie, and headed to the nearest Petronas station to fill up.

Ending the Day

With all our errands completed, we were out of ideas for lunch and decided to keep things simple. Syed Bistro, just a stone’s throw from home, became our final stop of the day — and with that, we wrapped up both our video and this blog entry.

Sunday Stroll │ SYED Bistro Dang Wangi

Errands Done, Time for Lunch

Happy National Recovery Plan (NRP) Phase 4, Kuala Lumpur!

After settling all our errands at Sungei Wang Plaza — and filling Alfie’s tank to the brim — we started thinking about lunch. With nothing specific in mind, we decided to play it safe and stick to something close to home.

Our Go To Spot

For as long as we’ve lived in this area, Syed Bistro has been one of our regular haunts. Their Roti Canai remains one of the fluffiest this side of the Klang Valley — freshly prepared, not pre made, and far less oily than most mamak shops. Believe you me, it’s a gem.

But today, we came for lunch instead of breakfast.

What We Ordered

We went with our usual favourites:

  • Mutton Briyani (for me)
  • Nasi Kandar with Curry Ikan Tenggiri (for Cat)
  • Nasi Kandar with Curry Chicken (for Brendan)
  • Beverages all around

The Damage

Our lunch came to RM55.25 (≈ USD14/EUR12). A little on the high side, but it made sense — the Briyani alone cost RM23 (≈ USD6/EUR5), almost half the bill.

A Reliable Neighbourhood Choice

Price aside, Syed Bistro remains one of our dependable go tos for a satisfying meal. Whether it’s their fluffy Roti Canai or their hearty rice dishes, it’s always comforting to return to a familiar favourite.

Sunday Stroll │ EYE SMART VISION Enterprise

After Brunch at Kopi Club

Happy National Recovery Plan (NRP) Phase 4, Kuala Lumpur!

After breakfast at Kopi Club, the Millennial headed off to AJ Sense Salon for his hair appointment. We took a leisurely stroll up to the ground floor for the next errand on our list: Eye Smart Vision.

Repurposing a Favourite Frame

Cat had an old pair of spectacles that she found wonderfully comfortable, and we thought it would be handy to turn it into a spare pair. For this, we paid a visit to Jimmy at Eye Smart Vision.

We’ve been coming to this optician for about five years, and we’ve always been impressed by how Jimmy conducts his business — attentive, honest, and genuinely focused on what his customers need.

Quick, Affordable, Reliable

Jimmy checked the frame and said he could fit in a new pair of lenses for only RM100 (≈ USD24/EUR21). He told us to come back in an hour, so we continued our stroll around Sungei Wang Plaza.

True to his word, Jimmy presented Cat with her “new” (old) glasses within the hour — good as new, and perfectly fitted.

Our Recommendation

If you’re in the neighbourhood and looking to replace your glasses — or repurpose an old frame you love — we highly recommend giving Jimmy at Eye Smart Vision a try. Reliable service, fair pricing, and a personal touch that keeps us coming back.

Sunday Stroll │ KOPI CLUB Sungei Wang Plaza

Back to Sungei Wang

Happy National Recovery Plan (NRP) Phase 4, Kuala Lumpur!

Sunday morning saw us back at Sungei Wang Plaza to run yet more errands. The Millennial had an appointment with his hair stylist at 11am, so we decided to have a quick breakfast — or brunch, depending on who you ask — at Kopi Club.

A Nostalgic Kopitiam Vibe

Located on the Lower Ground (Concourse Level), Sungei Wang’s website describes Kopi Club as:

“A delicious home cooked food which reminds us of our childhood days — our very own local delicacies.”

We must say, we agree. Kopi Club exudes that old school kopitiam charm — warm lighting, simple décor, and a comforting, familiar atmosphere. It felt soothing, almost like stepping back into a gentler time.

A Very Malaysian Breakfast

Our very Malaysian breakfast came up to RM28.80 (≈ USD7/EUR6). A teensy bit pricey by our usual standards, but considering the location and the nostalgic ambience, we didn’t mind paying a little extra.

A Simple Start to a Busy Day

With brunch sorted, the Millennial headed off for his haircut, and we continued with our errands — grateful for a calm, cosy start to our Sunday in the heart of Kuala Lumpur.

Saturday Stroll │ Sunway Putra Walkabout

A Mall Steeped in Personal History

Happy National Recovery Plan (NRP) Phase 4, Kuala Lumpur!

As usual, we had a few errands to run this Saturday morning and headed out to Sunway Putra Mall — a shopping centre steeped in history, and for some reason, intertwined with mine. We planned to visit the MAX store and have some Korean cuisine for lunch.

The Millennial had spent the entire night gaming with his UNIMAS friends, so we decided to let him sleep in.

A Walk Down Memory Lane

We’ve touched on this mall before, but here’s a quick recap.

I first came to Kuala Lumpur as a teenager in 1986, and around that time, a new shopping complex called “The Mall” opened its doors. Back then, it was the largest shopping centre in Malaysia and housed the country’s first Yaohan store, which operated from 1987 until 1997 before its parent company went bankrupt in Japan.

This mall holds many memories. It sits across the street from the Putra World Trade Centre, the Seri Pacific Hotel, and the old Hentian Duta bus terminal — the main hub for express buses heading to the East Coast, including my hometown of Kuala Terengganu. Anyone travelling to or from the East Coast would have passed through “The Mall” at some point.

In March 2011, Sunway acquired the building in a public auction. A major refurbishment began in May 2013, and after two long years — during which all tenants had to move out — it reopened as Sunway Putra Mall in May 2015.

Lunch and a Friendly Catch Up

We had lunch at MyeongDong Topokki, satisfying Cat’s craving for Korean food, before heading down to the lobby to meet our good friend Shah.

Looking Ahead

We’ll soon be heading back to my hometown of Kuala Terengganu in a few days’ time. More stories, more food, and more walkabouts await — so please stay tuned.

Saturday Stroll │ MyeongDong Topokki

A Craving for Korean Food

Happy National Recovery Plan (NRP) Phase 4, Kuala Lumpur!

Cat had a sudden hankering for Korean cuisine, so we decided to head to MyeongDong Topokki, located inside Selera Street Food Court on the 4th floor of Sunway Putra Mall.

A Small Disappointment

Much to Cat’s disappointment, they were out of her favourite Bibimbap. So she settled for the Bulgogi Chicken Deopbap, while I ordered the same dish — but with Beef instead.

Despite the initial let down, we enjoyed our lunch. The flavours were comforting, and the portions were just right for a mid day meal.

The Damage

Our total came to RM40.30 (≈ USD10/EUR9). A little pricey by our usual standards, but Korean food is still considered a bit of a novelty here, so we didn’t mind paying a little extra for the treat.

A Satisfying Stop

All in all, it was a simple, satisfying lunch — and it certainly hit the spot for Cat’s Korean craving.

I remember... Kuala Terengganu

Happy Birthday Vivi!

Kuala Terengganu.

I spent all my youth here. My earliest memory as a child was running buck naked along a kampung lane, living in a humble kampung house with no running water. I remember taking baths by a well and depending on an outhouse to do my ‘business.’ Kampung Nesan Empat is a distant memory, a haunting memory that stayed with me.

I also remember living in a house in the general vicinity of Jalan Pejabat dubbed the "ghost" house. I remember being friends with a girl next door called Ah Lan who lived with her elder siblings that were very fond of using (unbeknownst to me at the time) very 'colourful' language. I remember my father being rather 'temperamental' then, and I remember a ten-year-old me running away from home in the dead of night in absolute fear of incurring my father's wrath. "Ghost" house indeed.

I remember living a quite nomadic life, having moved house many times before finally settling down at Kampung Padang (somehow later know as Jalan Air Jernih). This house belonged to my grandparents and was one of the last ‘residential’ houses still standing in the town of Kuala Terengganu until it was sold and torn down more than ten years ago.

18 Kampung Padang, later 18 Jalan Air Jernih (belakang Hotel Warisan)

I remember walking every day to my primary school (Sekolah Rendah Sultan Sulaiman 2) a kilometre away, being bullied by a boy in Standard Six and having my books thrown out of the classroom, strewn all over the branches of a tree. I remember my first crush when I was twelve, her Malay name translated to English says Princess Diana! It was also about the same time that I started wearing underwear.

I remember moving to a house my father bought when I was thirteen in Bukit Payong. In the days before wide and immaculately paved roads and slick highways I felt like I was living in a remote village, disconnected from the world. The house in Bukit Payong was fun, and each school break was spent riding my bicycle all over even ending up in Chendering beach some twenty kilometres away.

I remember going to school took what felt like an eternity, catching the school bus at 10am only to arrive at school three hours later. I guess my parents grew tired of the commute and eventually sold the house. We moved back to the town of Kuala Terengganu and became nomads again moving several times more.

I remember frequenting a stall in Kampung Cina to have my 'ceranang' fix. It was a hole-in-the-wall stall fondly referred to as "Mok Mek Ceranang" that sold ridiculously cheap food and beverages. The stall was located at the back of a store that sold Marvel, DC, and other comic books that I could not afford. What I wouldn't give for another taste of the Auntie’s ceranang (I have no idea how to describe 'ceranang', perhaps you could Google it?).

*Vinodh later reminded me that the name of the ceranang cum comic book shop was Chee Sek!

I remember playing football on the beach, cycling my red racing bike to secondary school (Sekolah Menengah Sultan Sulaiman) several times a day for classes and tennis practice after that. I remember Kris and I cutting class, hiding out at Deva’s house to watch, erm, ‘recreational’ movies on a projector.

*Kris later reminded me of the packet of Matterhorn cigarettes we used to share at Batu Buruk beach, and in his own words "The thought of Matterhorns still gives me a sick feeling in the stomach!".

I also remember hitting puberty in a bad way and being an absolute prick to my oldest and bestest friend Vinodh. I would like to believe that I have since made amends with him, and that our friendship has stood the test of time.

I remember spending a lot of time in church rehearsing with the church band, preparing for events, and practicing carolling each December. I even remember serving as the church's Youth Council President, imagine that! Christmas time was always a wet affair, with heavy rains and flood waters rising especially around where we lived.

I remember being an awkward teen constantly feeling alone and left out. I remember looking around me in class wondering what I could do to fit in. I sadly have no fond memories of my teenaged years, outside of home and church. I do remember however, being well fed in school for not much money. A hearty lunch at the school canteen would only cost me fifty sen (RM0.50), and with RM10 in my pocket I was king of the world!

I remember moving to Kuala Lumpur in 1986 after completing my SPM (Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia, equivalent to the "O" Levels) to further my studies, then work. I remember a very dark period in my life when I did not come back to visit the family for five whole years.

After the dark cloud had lifted, I remember eventually coming back to Kuala Terengganu ten years later to begin a new chapter in my life. I joined Southern Bank in June 1996, and a month later I met and fell in love with Cat.

celebrating her 21st birthday

We were married in August 1998 and a year later welcomed Brendan to the world.

Catholic Mission of Kuala Terengganu

1st August 1999... very pregnant!

a week later!

I remember the last few months we spent in Kuala Terengganu before I was transferred to Kuala Lumpur (still with Southern Bank then) to join a newly established department. We made sure to visit all our favourite eateries, and bade farewell to all our dearest friends and family.

leaving Kuala Terengganu in September 2002, never to return

Some years later my parents too relocated to Bentong. After a period of neglect our ancestral home at Kampung Padang was sold off and torn down to make way for a car park. How incredibly cliched.

Cat and I will always look back at our time in Kuala Terengganu with great fondness, and always with a tinge of melancholy. It was here that we met, fell in love, and got married. It was here that our son was born, and it was here that my career took a step in the right direction.

We will soon be back to visit Kuala Terengganu, to where it all began for me, for us. Back to the scene of many ‘crimes,’ back to where my heart never left.

Saturday Sashay │Running Errands

Starting the Morning at Plaza Damas

Happy National Recovery Plan (NRP) Phase 4, Kuala Lumpur!

We had a few errands to run this fine Saturday morning, so our first stop was Plaza Damas. I went for a much needed haircut, while Cat headed upstairs to tend to the studio apartment that my sister left in our care.

Lunch (and Dinner) Sorted

With the morning errands done, we took care of lunch — and dinner — by packing several packets of our favourite Kelantanese mixed rice (Kak Wok) from Warung Soho. A reliable choice, and always delicious.

A Trip to Jalan Pasar

Next, we made our way to Jalan Pasar, where I stopped by Syarikat Instraco, an audio shop I’ve visited many times over the years. My mission: to find a replacement speaker for one of my old guitar amplifiers.

Long before the Vox Pathfinder 10, the Boss Katana 50 Mk2, or the Orange Crush 35RT, my faithful companion was a modest Dars 30 watt amp. It served me well for many years — until its speaker was blown out by a rather rambunctious Millennial.

A Well Deserved Upgrade

To reward this little workhorse for its years of loyal service, I picked up a Celestion Ten 30 — described as “a 10 inch guitar speaker that combines warm lows with a vocal mid range and an articulate top end.” A fitting upgrade for an amp that has been with me through countless practice sessions and late night jams.

Wrapping Up the Day

With errands completed and the Dars amp ready for revival, we headed home feeling satisfied. A productive Saturday, and a small but meaningful reward for a trusted old friend.
