CAM Day 4 │ TANAH RATA to KL: Going Home!

Going Home

We woke up at 7:45am and made our way down to the laundromat at 8:30am. After depositing our clothes in the washer, we walked across the street to Yong Teng Café for breakfast. After the luxurious meals of the past few days, it felt good to enjoy something simple and down to earth.

Yong Teng Café is run by an elderly couple who are both hearing and speech impaired. We ordered:

  • 2 Nasi Lemak with Fried Egg
  • Toast Bread with Kaya Butter
  • 1 Hot Coffee with Milk
  • 1 Hot Tea with Milk
  • 1 Hot Lemon Tea

All for a very reasonable RM22.00 (≈ USD/EUR).

While having breakfast, we dashed back to the laundromat to move our clothes from the washer to the dryer. By the time we finished eating, our laundry was done too.

Checking Out

We returned to the Airbnb to pack our freshly washed clothes. At 10:15am, we checked out, deposited the key and card at the designated spot, and slowly strolled to the Tanah Rata Bus Terminal.

Since we rode Unititi Express to get here, we decided to give their rival, CS Express, a chance for the return trip.

The CS Express bus, registration JRH9722, arrived at 10:55am and departed Tanah Rata at 11:02am.

Almost immediately, we noticed a marked difference in service between the two companies — and made a mental note to stick with Unititi from now on.

The Journey Back

Twenty minutes later, the bus reached Ringlet and made a lengthy stop to pick up a couple of passengers who loaded what felt like a boatload of belongings — as though they were moving house.

After another hour of twists and turns, we passed the Tapah Toll Plaza at 12:50pm, then made a pit stop at the Tapah R&R along the North–South Expressway.

The bus resumed its journey at 1:15pm, and about an hour and a half later, we drove past the Jalan Duta Toll Plaza.

We arrived at KL Sentral at 2:50pm, collected our bags, and headed in for a late lunch.

Late Lunch at KL Sentral

We settled on Meals Station and ordered:

  • 2 Nasi Lemak Ayam Pandan
  • Blackpepper Grilled Chicken Chop
  • French Fries
  • 2 Coca Colas
  • Fizzy Sour Plum

All for RM65.10 (≈ USD14/EUR13).

Lunch done, we walked back to the main exit of KL Sentral and hailed a six seater Grab for RM22.00 (≈ USD5/EUR4) back to our condo.

Until Next Time

Thus ended our Highlands adventurising — cool air, winding roads, strawberries, tea, and birthday memories.

Until the next time!

CAM Day 3 │ The SMOKEHOUSE Hotel & Restaurant

It’s My Birthday

In business since 1937 and touted as “the finest English restaurant in the highlands,” The Smokehouse Restaurant has long been known for traditional country house hospitality. In Malaysian hands since 1977, it continues to offer guests a glimpse of what first drew travellers to Cameron Highlands — lush gardens, refined British cuisine, and a setting right beside the stunning Cameron Highlands golf course.

So, a little past 1:00pm, we hailed a Grab to The Smokehouse for RM10.00 (≈ USD/EUR2).

A Classic English Lunch

It was our first time here, so we took our time browsing the menu. Still quite full from breakfast at Uncle Chow’s, we eventually settled on:

  • Rib Eye Steak for Brendan
  • Steak and Mushroom Pie for me
  • Chicken Maryland for Cat
  • Coca Cola for them
  • Chamomile Tea for me

And for dessert:

  • Apple Pie Tea Set
  • Strawberry Sundae

Our English lunch came to RM377.00 (≈ USD80/EUR73) — not cheap by any stretch, but what the heck, it’s my birthday.

Strolling the Gardens

By the time we were done, it was almost 3:15pm, so we took a slow stroll around the gardens of The Smokehouse. The manicured hedges, stone pathways, and bursts of flowers made it feel like a little slice of the English countryside. We’ll let our footage paint the words for us.

Back to Cameron Fair

We then hailed another Grab — again RM10.00 (≈ USD/EUR2) — back to Cameron Fair.

Our perut was absolutely stuffed, and we were undecided about whether we’d even manage dinner later. Let’s wait and see.

More birthday adventures coming up!

CAM Day 3 │ UNCLE CHOW Kopitiam

It’s My Birthday

Our breakfast destination, Uncle Chow Kopitiam, was only a ten minute walk away — and much like OK Tuck, it’s a perennial favourite of ours. Perched atop a small hill, one side of the kopitiam overlooks lush greenery, while the shop itself is tastefully adorned with flowers and plants.

We were a little late, so the place was packed, but we were fortunate to snag a diminutive table. We scanned the QR code and proceeded to order:

  • 2 sets of Chow’s Big Breakfast
  • Ham and Cheese Toastie
  • 2 Teh Tarik
  • Sparkling Passion Lemon Longan

Our Highlands breakfast came to RM70.60 (≈ USD15/EUR14) — a little steep by our standards, but what the heck, it’s my birthday.

Exploring Tanah Rata

By the time we were done with breakfast, it was almost 10:30am, so we decided to explore Tanah Rata properly before heading back.

CAM Day 3 │ TANAH RATA Morning Walkabout

It’s My Birthday

The birthday boy overslept, and by the time we were ready for breakfast, it was already 9:15am. Thankfully, our breakfast destination was only a ten minute walk away.

We left Cameron Fair, headed south, then turned right onto Jalan Mentigi Utama, walking southwest. After a while, we crossed the road and continued along Jalan Royal Lily 4/2. At the end of this quiet street sat Uncle Chow Kopitiam.

By the time we finished breakfast, it was almost 10:30am, so we decided to explore Tanah Rata properly.

Exploring Tanah Rata

We doubled back along Jalan Mentigi Utama and returned to Cameron Fair, stopping by the CS Travel Liner ticketing counter to ask about printing our bus tickets for tomorrow’s trip back to Kuala Lumpur. It turned out the system here is quite basic — all we needed to do was tell the bus inspector our seat numbers, and we’d be checked in.

We then continued our walk along Jalan Camelia heading north. At the end of the street, we crossed Jalan Besar and turned right, walking southeast along the main road. The pedestrian five foot way was lined with shops and eateries, and we stopped at the Cameron Bharat Plantations Retail Shop to pick up souvenirs.

We ended up with ten boxes of flavoured tea bags at RM13.50 each (≈ USD/EUR3).

We continued walking along Jalan Besar to the very end before doubling back. Then we crossed the road and walked east for several hundred metres before turning onto Jalan Camelia Utama 1, which led us back into Cameron Fair.

Here, we browsed for sweaters and ended up buying one each for Brendan and Cat, priced at RM55.00 each (≈ USD12/EUR11).

Back to the Airbnb

With our morning adventure complete, we made our way back to the Airbnb to rest and freshen up.

What’s Next

Stay tuned — we’re heading to a swanky restaurant later for my birthday lunch!

CAM Day 2 │ KL OK TUCK Steamboat Restaurant: 10 Years Later!

Dinner at OK Tuck

After our brief visit to the Big Red Strawberry Farm, we took a walk to the main thoroughfare of Brinchang. A short while later, we arrived at our dinner destination — the perennial favourite OK Tuck Steamboat Restaurant.

Since we already had steamboat last night, we decided to explore the rest of the menu and settled on:

  • Chicken in Dried Chillies
  • Pork Ribs in Guinness Stout
  • Fried Eggplant
  • Salted Vegetable Soup
  • Omelette with Shrimp
  • Plain Omelette
  • A round of Chinese Tea

A Dish Worth Returning For

We could hardly believe it had been ten years since we were last here. The main reason we keep coming back is the legendary pork rib “beer” — which we take to mean pork ribs marinated in Guinness Stout. We’ve hunted high and low for the same dish in the Klang Valley but to no avail.

We’ll let the footage paint the words for us.

Our early dinner came to RM97.00 (≈ USD21/EUR19).

Back to Tanah Rata

After dinner, we hailed a Grab back to the Airbnb in Tanah Rata, ready to wind down for the evening.

What’s Next

CAM Day 2 │ Evening In BRINCHANG: Big Red Strawberry Farm • Cactus Valley

Strawberries and Cactuses

The scones we had at Cameron Valley Tea House turned out to be so filling that we skipped lunch entirely. I spent the early afternoon sorting out footage from the morning, and soon after, we all drifted into a nap.

We woke at 3:45pm and got ready for the next adventure of the day: strawberries and cactuses.

Big Red Strawberry Farm

We hailed a Grab to Big Red Strawberry Farm in Brinchang for RM18.00 (≈ USD/EUR4). Our kind driver reminded us that during Ramadan, the farm closes at 5:00pm instead of the usual 6:00pm.

We arrived at 4:15pm, giving us less than an hour — but better than nothing.

We made our way up the steep climb to the café and ordered:

  • Strawberry Ice Cream
  • Strawberry Jelly
  • Strawberry Pudding

All for RM22.70 (≈ USD5/EUR4).

After our sweet treats, we strolled through the alleys lined with fresh vegetables and flowers before heading toward Cactus Valley, which had already closed for the day.

Walking to Dinner

We continued down to the main road and walked along Jalan Angsana heading northeast, then turned right onto Jalan Besar. Further south, near the fire station, we crossed over to Jalan Bandar.

A short walk later, we arrived at our dinner destination — the perennial favourite OK Tuck Steamboat Restaurant.

We enjoyed a sumptuous early dinner, then hailed a Grab back to Cameron Fair for RM13.00 (≈ USD/EUR3).

A Little Shopping

Back at Cameron Fair, we browsed a clothing store in search of thicker sleeping attire. I finally found a tracksuit for RM120.00 (≈ USD25/EUR23) — the nights in Cameron Highlands can get very cold, so I should be warm and toasty tonight.

What’s Next

By the way, tomorrow’s my birthday, so do stay tuned — and be sure to catch our upcoming video on OK Tuck.

CAM Day 2 │ CAMERON VALLEY Buggy Ride!

Buggy Ride Through the Tea Plantation

We picked you up again after breakfast as we walked across the carpark to take a buggy ride around the tea plantation — RM15 each (≈ USD/EUR3).

The six minute ride down to the base of the plantation was peaceful, with cool air and rolling green hills on both sides. We disembarked to take a short stroll and snap some photos of the epic view — endless rows of tea bushes cascading down the slopes.

Back to the Tea House

After soaking in the scenery, we hopped back onto the buggy and returned to the tea house. From there, we made our way back to the Airbnb to rest and regroup.

CAM Day 2 │ CAMERON VALLEY Tea House: Morning Gallivant!

Tea House Morning

We had a good night’s sleep and woke up at 8:00am.

We left the Airbnb at 8:15am and hailed a Grab to Cameron Valley Tea House 2 for RM8.00 (≈ USD/EUR2). A winding five minutes later, we arrived at a virtually deserted tea house — no surprise, given that it was the holy month of Ramadan.

Breakfast With a View

We came here for a simple Highlands breakfast:

• 3 sets of Classic Scones
• 1 jug of Teh Tarik

The bill came to RM62.00 (≈ USD13/EUR12) — a little pricey by our standards, but the spectacular view more than justified it. Misty hills, rolling tea bushes, and cool morning air… it’s hard to put a price on that.

Buggy Ride Through the Plantation

After breakfast, we walked across the carpark to take a buggy ride around the tea plantation. Be sure to catch our upcoming video showcasing the lush greenery and sweeping landscapes.

Once we were done, we hailed another Grab — again RM8.00 (≈ USD/EUR2) — back to the Airbnb.

A Quick Trim

Back at Cameron Fair, I went for a haircut at Uncle Mike’s for RM15.00 (≈ USD/EUR3) before heading back up to the Airbnb.

What’s Next

We plan to visit a strawberry farm in Brinchang later this evening, so please stay tuned.

CAM Day 1 │ C BUDDY Steamboat • TANAH RATA Evening Stroll

Steamboat Dinner in Tanah Rata

We picked you up again after checking into our Airbnb. Deprived of sleep, we took a long nap and only woke at 6:30pm.

We had initially planned to have dinner in Brinchang, but with no Grab drivers available, we made alternate plans and wandered around Tanah Rata instead. Eventually, we found ourselves back at Cameron Fair, where Cat spotted a steamboat restaurant on the first floor — C Buddy Steamboat.

Dinner at C Buddy Steamboat

We were seated and asked to scan a QR code to begin ordering. While I busied myself setting up the time lapse, Brendan and Cat browsed the online menu and settled on:

  • Two flavoured pot: Tom Yam + Corn Soup
  • Platter 1: Prawns, Fish, Chicken Meat, Pork Slices, Minced Pork
  • 2 bowls of Rice
  • 1 bowl of Udon Noodles
  • 1 jug of Chrysanthemum Tea

Our dinner came to RM119.15 (≈ USD25/EUR23).

Supper at OldTown

After dinner, we walked down to OldTown White Coffee and took away:

  • 2 Hot Hazelnut Coffee
  • 2 Iced Honey Lemon
  • Kaya & Butter Toast
  • Peanut Butter Toast
  • French Toast

All for RM65.90 (≈ USD14/EUR13).

We then dropped by MyNEWS to pick up some snacks before heading back to the Airbnb, where I began sorting and organising the day’s footage.

What’s Next

CAM Day 1 │ AIRBNB: Cameron Fair TANAH RATA

Checking In to Our Airbnb

We picked you up again after lunch as we crossed Jalan Besar and headed south toward Cameron Fair, a mixed commercial residential complex much like our own condo.

Our Airbnb host, Amirah, graciously allowed us to check in early at 2:00pm, and asked us to contact her point person, Ayie. We placed a call and arranged to collect the key and access card.

Our Home in the Highlands

We made our way up to the seventh floor, where our home for the next four days awaited. We’ll let our footage show the full walkthrough, but here’s the essence:

  • A diminutive but well appointed unit
  • Everything we needed except a washer
  • A stunning view of Tanah Rata that immediately won us over

At RM200 (≈ USD50/EUR43) per night, this apartment represented excellent value for money — comfortable, convenient, and perfectly located.

Settling In

Once we’d unpacked, the cool Highlands air lulled us into a long afternoon nap. We woke up late in the evening, refreshed and ready for dinner.

CAM Day 1 │ JASMINE Cafe TANAH RATA

We’re in Tanah Rata

We picked you up again as we disembarked from the Unititi bus and made our way west along Jalan Besar.

Since we hadn’t eaten anything since six in the morning, our first agenda upon arriving in Cameron Highlands was simple: find lunch.

Lunch at Jasmine Café

We eventually settled on Jasmine Café, a place we coincidentally visited during our first trip here ten years ago. Stepping inside felt like stepping back into an old memory.

After a quick browse through the menu, we ordered:

  • Mixed Grill for me
  • Chicken Chop for Cat
  • Lamb Chop for Brendan
  • Strawberry Juice × 2
  • Passionfruit Tea for me

Our first meal in the Highlands came to RM131.00 (≈ USD28/EUR26). A little steep, but the nostalgia made it worthwhile.

CAM Day 1 │ KL to TANAH RATA: Birthday In The Highlands!

We’re in Tanah Rata

To celebrate my 55th birthday, we made plans to spend the next few days in Cameron Highlands. We could scarcely believe it had been ten years since our last visit.

We awoke at 6:00am and left home forty minutes later. I hailed a six seater Grab to TBS, but for some reason the driver of the first car — registration VFL5758, driven by Mohammad Jasnie — decided not to pick us up. He remained parked near Concorde Hotel the entire time and eventually cancelled the ride.

Brendan then booked another six seater Grab for RM31.00 (≈ USD7/EUR6), which arrived promptly at 7:15am.

We reached TBS at 7:45am and were dropped at the main gate (C) on Level 3.

Breakfast at TBS

Hoping for a quick breakfast, we went up to Level 4, only to find everything closed except Dunkin Donuts, as it was the holy month of Ramadan. We settled for drinks and headed back down to Level 3 at 8:00am.

We passed the turnstile and security check, took the escalator to Level 2, and made our way to Gate 5. Five minutes later, we were allowed to board our Unititi bus, registration VED6544.

At 8:35am, the bus departed TBS.

The Journey North

Forty minutes later, we passed the Jalan Duta Toll Plaza and continued north along the North–South Expressway — well and truly on our way to Cameron Highlands.

Two hours into the journey, the bus exited at Bidor to drop off a passenger, then exited again at Tapah fifteen minutes later. We made a 15 minute pit stop at the rest area after the Tapah Toll Plaza.

The bus then resumed its drive toward Tanah Rata, about 60 kilometres away, a stretch known for its twisting, winding roads.

Welcome to Cameron Highlands

An hour of bends and curves later, we arrived in Ringlet, where the bus stopped to refuel. Shortly after, we continued uphill and finally reached the Tanah Rata Bus Station at 12:40pm.

Welcome to Cameron Highlands — cool air, rolling hills, and a birthday getaway a decade in the making.

Hari Kraf Kebangsaan 2024

National Craft Day Walkabout

We met you again as we stepped off at Conlay MRT Station and walked across the road to the Kuala Lumpur Craft Complex, where Hari Kraf Kebangsaan 2024 (National Craft Day) was in full swing. The atmosphere was lively, colourful, and full of creative energy.

First Things First: Food

We were feeling a little hungry, so we headed straight to Kampung Nelayan Kraf, where a small cluster of food stalls had been set up. After walking around and weighing our options, we settled on Nasi Kak Wok, a Kelantanese favourite made up of rice, chicken cutlets, and gravy.

We ordered:

  • 2 portions of Nasi Kak Wok at RM9.00 each
  • 2 cups of iced sugar cane juice at RM3.00 each

Our early lunch came to RM24.00 (≈ USD5 / EUR5). It was filling, satisfying, and exactly what we needed before diving into the exhibition halls.

Beads, Bags, and Handcrafted Finds

We then made our way into the main arts and crafts exhibition hall. Cat happily browsed from stall to stall, taking her time with every display. A stall selling Sabahan ceramic beads immediately caught her attention, but the owner was nowhere to be seen at the time.

We continued exploring and soon met our friend Lipang Lawai from Raben Beads. Cat picked up two pairs of earrings for RM28.00 (≈ USD6 / EUR5).
Not long after, a brightly coloured woven bag at Jenny Geoffrey’s stall caught Cat’s eye. We could not resist, so we brought it home for RM50.00 (≈ USD11 / EUR10).

A Favourite Beadstress

One of the highlights of the visit was meeting Caroline Agan, Cat’s favourite beadstress. From her stall, we bought:

  • 2 pairs of earrings
  • 2 Kabo necklaces

These beautiful handmade pieces came to RM260.00 (≈ USD55 / EUR50). It felt special supporting artisans we already admired.

More Craft, More Tradition

We took a short break at the canteen for drinks before continuing into the next exhibition hall, which focused on household items. We browsed through the displays of Labu Sayong, the traditional gourd shaped water vessel known for keeping water cool.

After some consideration, we chose a medium sized Labu Sayong from Qazana Gifts & Crafts for RM60.00 (≈ USD13 / EUR12).

Closing the Loop

We looped back to the arts and crafts hall and were pleased to find Houston Rarandis finally back at his stall. From him, we bought two Sabahan ceramic necklaces for RM150.00 (≈ USD32 / EUR29).

Heading Home With Treasures

After two and a half hours, we left the Kuala Lumpur Craft Complex with a wonderful collection of handmade items, full hands, and happy hearts. We made our way back to Conlay MRT Station, already replaying the highlights of the afternoon in our minds.

Stay tuned—and be sure to catch our previous video, where we shared an encounter with a particularly rude GoKL bus driver who definitely caught us on the wrong day.

TBS • Conlay • Titiwangsa: GoKL Driver Gets A Piece Of My Mind!

GoKL Driver Gets a Shelling

We headed out to run an errand at Terminal Bersepadu Selatan (TBS), a large transport hub serving buses to destinations across Malaysia. With my birthday coming up in less than two weeks, we had already bought bus tickets online for a short highland escape. All we needed to do was print the physical tickets.

Crowds at TBS

We left our condo at a quarter to eleven and made our way to Bandaraya LRT Station. From there, we took the train to Bandar Tasik Selatan for RM2.90 (≈ USD0.60 / EUR0.60).

When we walked into TBS, we were met with a wall of people. The place was packed. With the long queues and crowds, we decided it was better to come back another day to print our tickets.

Changing Plans

We left TBS and returned to Bandar Tasik Selatan LRT Station, then took another train to Chan Sow Lin. From there, we walked over to the MRT station nearby and caught another train to Conlay MRT Station for RM3.50 (≈ USD0.70 / EUR0.70).

Across the street was the Kuala Lumpur Craft Complex, where Hari Kraf Kebangsaan 2024 (National Craft Day) was taking place. We decided to spend some time there instead and stayed for over two hours. More on that in our other video.

Heading Home the Long Way

After leaving the craft complex with a lovely haul, we returned to Conlay MRT Station and took the train to Titiwangsa MRT Station for RM2.00 (≈ USD0.40 / EUR0.40). We then made our way to the Titiwangsa GoKL Hub.
Soon after, we boarded a GoKL Red Line free bus to Sogo Kuala Lumpur.

Enough Was Enough

Sadly, the driver was rude and said something unpleasant to Cat. This was not our first bad experience, but it was the last straw. As we got off the bus, I gave him a firm piece of my mind. I told him I was filming and reminded him plainly to mind his manners.

The driver looked stunned, and we walked away without another word.

Wrapping Up

We then made our way back to our condo, tired but calm again. Plans were already forming for the following week, including a visit to a BIG HOME Expo at Bukit Jalil Stadium.

Stay tuned—more adventures were coming.
