Orangutans… This Time?
We had tried visiting the Semenggoh Wildlife Centre a few years ago, but constant rain ruined our plans. This time, we were better prepared — and since it rarely rains in the morning, we were hopeful.
But a heavy downpour last night cast doubt. When I woke up at 6:00am, it was still raining, so we decided to defer our visit to the afternoon instead.
A Slow Morning Before the Attempt
We spent the morning running errands and left the homestay at 12:10pm for lunch at Premier Food Republic at the ninth mile of Jalan Penrissen. After eating, we continued our drive to Semenggoh and arrived at 1:30pm.
Even though the centre only opened at 2:00pm, a long line had already formed.

Half an hour later, we finally paid our entrance fee — RM5 each — plus RM10 each for the buggy ride.
Total: RM30 (≈ USD7/EUR6).
We joined the queue and hopped onto a buggy that took us to the orangutan feeding area. The ride was only three minutes, but the moment we entered the forest, we were surrounded by thick, lush vegetation.
We took a leisurely stroll to the feeding platform and began the long wait.
Waiting for a Wild Orangutan
While we waited, the park ranger gave his briefing and laid down his two golden rules:
- Keep voices low.
- If an orangutan approaches, move away immediately.
The feeding window was two hours long. We waited… and waited… and right near the end, a three year old orangutan finally appeared. A brief but magical moment.
Not wanting to get caught in the crush of people trying to leave, we slipped out early, caught the first buggy back, and reached the entrance three minutes later.
