PETALING STREET Walkabout

нello everyone! we are caт and нarold. welcoмe тo oυr blog, creaтed ιn нonoυr oғ oυr devoтιon тo тнe everyday ғood ғor тнe everyday perѕon, aѕ well aѕ тo caтalogυe oυr мeмorιeѕ, lιғe'ѕ evenтѕ, and тravelѕ wнere oυr 'perυт' (тυммy) leadѕ тнe way!

Happy NRP Phase 4 Kuala Lumpur!

This is our longest video yet... Buoyed by our acquisition of the DJI Pocket 2, we woke up early this Sunday morning and made plans to go for a walkabout. It has been a while since we last visited Petaling Street and thought today was a good day as any to walk there.

Leaving our condominium we made our way to Lebuh Ampang and walked past our favourite Banana Leaf Rice restaurant, Restoran Kader. We then walked across Jalan Tun Perak before arriving at Medan Pasar.

Taking a minute to admire the Old Market Square Clock Tower we continued along in a southern direction until we reached Central Market, and found Kasturi Walk cordoned off for repair works.

We then walked across Jalan Tun Tan Cheng Lock and took a right into Jalan Hang Lekir before finally arriving at Petaling Street. The streets were busy, and welcome sign of things finally get back to normal.
My wife then suggested we try visiting an attraction nearby, so we headed south along Petaling Street then turned left and headed west along Jalan Sultan until we reached the intersection of Jalan Tun H S Lee.

We then turned right and headed east along Lorong Panggung before arriving at Kwai Chai Hong (鬼仔巷) which literally means Ghost Alley. The place was crowded and with most not observing social distancing we beat a hasty retreat.

We exited the alley, turned left and headed east along Jalan Balai Polis before getting to Jalan Panggong where there are a host of cafes and eateries. In quite in the mood for western cuisine we continued east along Jalan Sultan before turning right and north along Jalan Tun H S Lee past the Sri Maha Mariamman Temple before arriving at our lunchtime spot.

Restoran Kiew Yee Baru has been our firm favourite and we arrived just in time too, as it soon started to rain. Apart from lunch we took away our favourite Curry Chicken for dinner later. After lunch and with the rain not receding, we sought shelter at a café simply called "etc.". Half an hour later the rain finally subsided and we walked back to Petaling Street, before heading east along Jalan Tun Tan Cheng Lock before walking across to Kotaraya Complex.

It has been many years since we were last at Kotaraya Complex, and it has transformed into a mini-Manila. We continued walking past this Complex before turning right heading east along Petaling Street until we reached the Old Market Square Clock Tower again.

From here we continued north and reached Leboh Ampang, where we walked across Jalan Tun Perak and turned left before entering Jalan Melayu and continuing north. We turned right at Jalan Masjid India and headed to our favourite hole-in-the-wall ‘Mamak’ stall called Mansion Tea Stall but affectionately known as as ‘Abang Abu’ (brother Abu) to us.

We ordered a dozen Roti Canai, to be had later with the Curry Chicken we took away from Restoran Kiew Yee Baru. This was when the DJI Pocket 2’s battery died, and this is where we will end our blog.

TIMES SQUARE Revisit: DJI Pocket 2!

нello everyone! we are caт and нarold. welcoмe тo oυr blog, creaтed ιn нonoυr oғ oυr devoтιon тo тнe everyday ғood ғor тнe everyday perѕon, aѕ well aѕ тo caтalogυe oυr мeмorιeѕ, lιғe'ѕ evenтѕ, and тravelѕ wнere oυr 'perυт' (тυммy) leadѕ тнe way!

Happy NRP Phase 4 Kuala Lumpur!

This is it! We made up our minds to invest in the DJI Pocket 2, which we hope to replace the hefty set-up that we have right now. The Lumix GX85 mounted atop the Zhiyun Crane M2 sitting on the Manfrotto PIXI Mini Tripod has product some awesome footage but is not practical especially when on holidays.

The recent trip to Ipoh has amplified our need to scale down our equipment so that we can have a more enjoyable holiday not hampered by cumbersome gear.

We made several enquiries with several camera shops and Altech Camera came up trumps. They ultimately offered a "super combo", which basically is the DJI Pocket 2 Creator Combo plus a host of other innumerable accessories including third party power bank, chest trap, car windscreen holder and a host of other goodies too plentiful to list here. All for an additional RM200 on top of the price of the Creator Combo package.

With the acquisition of the DJI Pocket 2 we hope to continue producing content without the burden of lugging around heavy and cumbersome gear. If all goes well (weather permitting) we hope to make a trip soon to the East Coast of Malaysia where we hail from and showcase the many attractions and cuisine. Please stay tuned!

We then headed down to the lower ground floor and had lunch at Taste of Asia Food Court. It was here that I realised the Pocket 2 did not have a memory card inserted and therefore we could not immediately begin testing it.

After lunch we headed back up to Altech Camera to see if we could purchase the cheapest memory card, and Eric was more than happy to oblige.

We were soon testing our little pocket dynamite and were blown away at how smooth the footages were. We walked around Berjaya Times Square and soon found ourselves taking away fried chicken from 4Fingers, a firm favourite of our son

We then hailed a Grab car home, and marvelled at the steady shots taken from within a moving vehicle, something that we struggled constantly with our old setup.

Here's to better content in the future!

Happy NRP Phase 4 Kuala Lumpur!

It's Day 4, the very last day of our Ipoh trip. We spent the whole morning packing since we planned to check out by 10am and be back in Kuala Lumpur by lunchtime.

Checking out promptly at 10am, we drove out of Ipoh town but not before checking out a pottery shop. Thowlee did not have the pot in mind, and we drove on and onto the Southbound North South Expressway.

A couple of hours later we decided to have lunch at the Overhead Bridge Restaurant (Restoran Jejantas) in Sungai Buloh. We settled on a stall that sold Nasi Tomato, while our son opted for A&W.

We got home at 1pm, hit the showers and began unpacking. I then took Alfie to a car wash in Kampung Baru. This is the last instalment in our series of Ipoh videos, but do stay tuned because we will be presenting to you our hometown in the East Coast of Malaysia next month.

Ipoh Trip Day 3 (Market Lane, Concubine Lane, Wife Lane, Restoran Nam Chau, Nasi Ganja, Ong Kee)

нello everyone! we are caт and нarold. welcoмe тo oυr blog, creaтed ιn нonoυr oғ oυr devoтιon тo тнe everyday ғood ғor тнe everyday perѕon, aѕ well aѕ тo caтalogυe oυr мeмorιeѕ, lιғe'ѕ evenтѕ, and тravelѕ wнere oυr 'perυт' (тυммy) leadѕ тнe way!

Happy NRP Phase 4 Kuala Lumpur!

Day 3 of our Ipoh trip saw us waking up pretty early in the morning again, this time in search of Ipoh's finest murals. Our morning stroll started from our Airbnb as we headed west along Jalan Russell taking in the sights, then north along Jalan Raja Musa Aziz for a little while before turning west again along Jalan Masjid until we reached the general vicinity of Mural Art's Lane.

Here we spent quite some time admiring the various wall art while marvelling at the artists' patience and dexterity.

After half an hour or so we headed west along Sultan Iskandar until we reached Ipoh River Front where we crossed to Jalan Bijeh Timah and entered the first of the three famous lanes, Second Concubine Lane — Market Lane (三奶巷).

Further north along Jalan Bijeh Timah we encountered the famous of the 3 lanes, Concubine Lane (Lorong Panglima 二奶巷) lined with souvenir shops, fashion outlets, cafes and dessert houses that were mostly closed (permanently or otherwise, we have no idea).

We finally entered the least famous of the lanes, Wife Lane (Lorong Hale 大奶巷) which in our minds held the least appeal, or rather, was not given much attention by the local council.

We worked up a mighty appetite after all that gallivanting and went looking for some authentic local breakfast before deciding on Restoran Nam Chau, the least busy of all the eateries here. We sampled the Kaya with Butter Toast, and the Tan Chi (Bread & Egg sandwich). A tall glass of iced white coffee was the customary accompaniment to this merry breakfast feast.

After breakfast we walked north along Jalan Bandar Timah, then left along Jalan Tun Sambanthan until we reached Padang Ipoh and disturbed a flock of pigeons.

Realising that it was already mid-morning, and the sun would be blazing down on us, we quickly made a hasty retreat back to our Airbnb. After a refreshing shower I began editing the previous day's videos in earnest. Tuckered out by the morning exertions we decided to order in from Grabfood and tried the famous Nasi Ganja Kedai Kopi Yong Suan. Due to the large dine in crowd on the weekends, we were only able to book a delivery after 2pm (which we were fine with).

It rained heavily in the evening, and with no plans made we found ourselves walking to Gerbang Malam again. This time we were determined to give Lou Wong a try. As luck would have it, we found an empty table but was told that we were not allowed to sit there since it was meant for 4 persons. We were asked to sit indoors and knowing that there would be inadequate ventilation we left Lou Wong. Guess what? Their loss is Ong Kee's gain!

After dinner we visited Lam Fong Biscuit Shop 南方饼家 and managed to acquire 2 bags full of confectionary delights. We then walked home, and I began working on the videos shot today.

We will be headed home tomorrow :(

нello everyone! we are caт and нarold. welcoмe тo oυr blog, creaтed ιn нonoυr oғ oυr devoтιon тo тнe everyday ғood ғor тнe everyday perѕon, aѕ well aѕ тo caтalogυe oυr мeмorιeѕ, lιғe'ѕ evenтѕ, and тravelѕ wнere oυr 'perυт' (тυммy) leadѕ тнe way!

Happy NRP Phase 4 Kuala Lumpur!

Day 2 of our Ipoh trip and we were up and about pretty early in the morning in search of some white coffee. We headed to the Little India district of Ipoh, hoping to have breakfast at Kedai Kopi Sin Yoon Loong and have us some 'famous' Ipoh White Coffee. Alas they were not ready to accept dine ins.

Across the street was Nam Heong White Coffee who were also not ready to accept dine ins. These series of events have led us to suspect the rate of vaccination among adults in Ipoh is rather low.

No matter, a very pleasant surprise lay in store for us when we finally were able to dine in at Restoran Makanan Yu Dan Mui 鱼旦妹茶室. Here we were served by a boy and girl team (siblings perhaps?) that impressed us mightily with their good service and friendly demeanour.

Breakfast out of the way, we then went to Mydin Mall in Manjoi to get some household provisions before heading over to Cyclone Car Wash since Alfie (the car) was rather dusty.

We then thought we would take a short trip to Taiping to visit its tranquil lake but was deterred by the voluminous traffic headed north. We then swung back to Ipoh town where we had lunch at a delightful local pizzeria called Miker Pizza. It was an excellent experience and a must-try for all pizza lovers. So good was their pizza that we ordered a large one to go as well!

We went back to our Airbnb and took an afternoon nap. As night-time approached, we decided to take a walk to the Gerbang Malam Ipoh, where we came upon Ipoh Tuck Kee Restaurant that served excellent noodles. Bellies filled, we strolled back to our Airbnb, and I began editing videos of the past few days.

We will be up early tomorrow morning since we plan to take a look at a diverse collection of murals, so please stay tuned!

After visiting Kellie's Castle we continued our drive to Ipoh. We arrived an hour later, and had a Dim Sum lunch at Foh San Restaurant.

We then drove a short distance to The Majestic Tower located along Jalan Dato Tahwil Azar just a stone's throw away from the famous Nasi Ganja at Jalan Yang Kalsom.

We'd like to list the top 3 things we love about this Airbnb:

Happy NRP Phase 4 Kuala Lumpur!

We've heard so much about this castle, so we penciled in a stop on our way to Ipoh.

Half an hour after departing from the Northbound R&R Tapah we exited the North South Expressway at Gopeng. We were eager to see the haunted castle that is Kellie's. With an entrance fee of RM2 and parking fee of RM2 per vehicle we thought it very reasonably priced, until we were told that we would have to incur a surcharge of RM50 if we used a 'DSLR" (what they called our little Lumix). Any and all footage shot with mobile phones will not incur any charge.

A lose-lose situation, we thought. Oh well, we move on along. Don't look back in anger... we heard her say? We intend to come back some day and do justice to Kellie's Castle, but only when common sense has prevailed and the RM50 surcharge is abolished.

We apologise profusely for the mostly shaky footage of Kellie's Castle since it was shot entirely with an iPhone X ☹

Making Sense of the National Recovery Plan (NRP)

нello everyone! we are caт and нarold. welcoмe тo oυr blog, creaтed ιn нonoυr oғ oυr devoтιon тo тнe everyday ғood ғor тнe everyday perѕon, aѕ well aѕ тo caтalogυe oυr мeмorιeѕ, lιғe'ѕ evenтѕ, and тravelѕ wнere oυr 'perυт' (тυммy) leadѕ тнe way!

Living under a cloud of confusion for a while, we finally made sense of the National Recovery Plan (NRP) and its various phases in relation to how it directed affected Kuala Lumpur, where we live.

Kuala Lumpur entered Phase 1 of the National Recovery Plan (NRP) on 16 August 2021. Among other things this meant that:

  • Eateries were ALLOWED to offer dine-in services, and only accept customers who are fully-vaccinated, and asymptomatic.
  • Interstate and inter-district travel (based on district borders determined by state governments) is still FORBIDDEN
  • Most shops and stores were ALLOWED to operate from 8 AM until 8 PM

It was then announced that effective 10 September 2021 Kuala Lumpur would enter Phase 2 of the NRP. While most restrictions were still in place this essentially meant that inter-district travel (based on district borders determined by state governments) is now ALLOWED. It was this announcement that spurred us to take a trip to Bagan Lalang.

Kuala Lumpur then entered Phase 3 of the NRP on 1 October 2021, and two weeks later finally entered the final phase i.e. Phase 4 of the NRP on 17 October 2021.

In the midst of all this it was announced by the Prime Minister that interstate travel would be allowed from 11 October onwards. With this announcements we soon made plans to visit several places, including our upcoming trips to Ipoh and Bentong.

It is worth noting here that the ability to dine-in, travel across state lines and do basically anything and everything outside the home is a privilege given to those who have been fully vaccinated only.

With this we hope that our blog, and vlog can flourish again.

All good things must come to an end...

With that in mind, and with a heavy heart we packed up our things and checked out of Seri Bayu Resort Hotel. It was a splendid three days and amazing two nights, and we hope to be back soon.

On the way back we stopped by Restoran Murugayah for brunch, and had the distinct impression that we were 'fleeced'? Oh well, the next stop at Mimi Dragonfruit soon washed away the bitter taste from our mouths. What's my fascinating with purple, anyway?

We were resigned to the fact that we would not be able to enjoy some good seafood this time around, with most eateries not accepting dine-ins, while the ones that do accept have let their standards slip.

So imagine our surprise when we called up Restoran Ming Tai to find out that they were accepting dine-ins for the first time today. The seafood gods must be smiling upon us... woohoo!

Happy NRP Phase 2 Kuala Lumpur!

We woke up quite late this morning, and with most eateries only allowing take-aways at the moment we enquired with the resort's front desk about options nearby. We were told to try the seafood stalls nearby, and so we took another stroll along Bagan Lalang beach.

Lunch turned out to be a massive disappointment. We however vowed not to highlight anything negative in our blog and vlog, so we chose not to mention the offending seafood stall.

After checking into Seri Bayu Resort Hotel we took an afternoon nap and awoke to hunger pangs. Bagan Lalang and its neighbouring Sungai Pelek town is famous for its seafood restaurants and having dinner in any one of these eateries would be a cinch, or so we thought.

We called one restaurant after another to find that these eateries only cater to takeaways at the moment, since their personnel have either not been fully vaccinated, or are in the midst of serving the 14-day period after the second dose.

We were thankful to eventually find a restaurant that allowed dine-ins but alas, this eatery did not serve seafood. No matter, we made our way to Sungai Pelek to have our dinner.

Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya has moved into Phase 2 of the national recovery plan (NRP), effective 10th September. After a miserable FIVE AND A HALF months locked up in our condo we now have license to roam again!

After much consideration we decided on spending a couple of nights at the Seri Bayu Resort Hotel in Bagan Lalang, and explore what it, and the surrounding area had in store. The nearby town of Sungai Pelek may prove to be very interesting too.

We booked the Family Suite, which was the cheaper alternative but was surprisingly very spacious. With two bedrooms and two bathrooms (the master bedroom complete with ensuite bathroom) we could not have asked for more.

Those looking for a relaxing retreat by the Bagan Lalang beach not wishing to pay an exorbitant rate for a night's stay in this area (*cough*avani*cough*) need look no further than Seri Bayu Beach Resort!

FULLY VACCINATED!

Happy MCO Kuala Lumpur!

All of Kuala Lumpur has been under a full movement control order (MCO) since 7th May. That means we have been spending a miserable 2 months imprisoned in our own home!

The missus and our son received their 1st dose of Oxford AstraZeneca Vaccine some time back (27th May to be exact), and will receive their 2nd dose after 9 weeks. This will happen on 29th July.

I on the other hand was not offered the Oxford AstraZeneca Vaccine together with them, and was quite worried for a while, fearing that I was overlooked. The fear was misplaced, as I was soon offered the Sinovac-CoronaVac Vaccine. I received my first dose on 13th June, and today completed the vaccination process. All's well that ends well I guess.

We hope that everyone has registered for the vaccination and pray that the MCO ends soon, so that we can upload more videos.

JOVIS Music

Happy MCO Kuala Lumpur!

All of Kuala Lumpur will be placed under a full movement control order (MCO) for the third time, effective tomorrow 7th May. We will probably stay home during the weekends for the next two weeks, so this is potentially our last video till the end of the MCO. Stay safe everyone!

We've been coming to Jovis Music for a few years now, more so after the 'situation' happened. Jack is a master luthier who takes guitar setup and intonation to a whole new level. The difference in the feel of a guitar before and after undergoing his magic touch is astounding, and we cannot recommend him enough. Happy MCO Kuala Lumpur!

Well then... its official! All of Kuala Lumpur will be placed under a full movement control order (MCO) for the third time, effective tomorrow 7th May. That means dining in will be forbidden, and so we hopped in the car and drove to Setapak for lunch at our favourite noodle shop, while running an errand as well.

We will probably stay home during the weekends for the next two weeks, so this is potentially our last video till the end of the MCO. With the way the trend is going at the moment we are fearful that the lockdown will be extended beyond the two weeks.

Stay safe everyone!

MASJID INDIA to LEBOH AMPANG Walkabout

Its Sunday and we were looking to go on another walkabout, although not as far as last week's walk to Dataran Merdeka. There's talk of businesses and schools closing under a purported MCO3 for Kuala Lumpur and the surrounding Klang Valley area, and this would also mean no dine-ins as well.

We decided to walk to Lebuh Ampang for our banana leaf rice fix (more on that in our previous video) before the imminent lockdown. We realised from watching our previous video from last week's walk to Dataran Merdeka that the clips were a little too short and abrupt, so this time we made sure to give each clip ample run time for you to soak in the sights.

Restoran KADER (Banana Leaf Rice)

Restoran Kader is located in the heart of Lebuh Ampang, and we have been coming here for our fix of banana leaf rice for as long as we can remember. While very reasonably priced, Kader is on par with the likes of its other upmarket contemporaries, although in our (biased) opinion it leaves the rest for dead!

As mentioned in an older post, I’ve actually been coming here since the 1990s, and nothing much has changed. The aroma emanating through the shop has not changed one bit, and is every bit as appetising now as it was back then.

HARTAMAS Shopping Centre Walkabout

Happy Labour Day everyone!

Whilst on a walkabout around Plaza Damas, we decided to pay Hartamas Shopping Centre a visit as well. It’s good to see most businesses still beating the odds here, and we hope that the worst is over.

PLAZA DAMAS Walkabout

 Happy Labour Day everyone!

We drove bright and early to Puchong in order to acquire a third spare battery for our little Lumix. The additional battery will bring us added comfort especially when shooting for extended periods.

We then drove to Plaza Damas, an area close to our hearts, to give it the attention it deserves. My brother-in-law owns an unoccupied studio apartment in the vicinity, and it has been left in our care. We do come from time to time check up on the unit and give it a little tender loving care so as to not let it feel neglected.

A lot has changed here, ravaged by the pandemic and we hope that in time Plaza Damas will be able to pick itself up again.

MASJID INDIA to DATARAN MERDEKA Walkabout

It's been a very long while since we went on a right proper walkabout, more than a year to be precise. Before 'the situation' we used to average 5km a day walking to Lake Gardens and back, alas that is no longer the case.

Starting out from our home, we walked the entire length of the route to Dataran Merdeka and back. We did not realised how scenic the route was, and managed to capture most of the sights in and around the locations we walked past.

HAMRO Nepali Restaurant

Today we decided to step out of our comfort zone and try something relatively new. We've been watching quite a few travel blogs and wondered if there were Nepali cuisine to be had here in Kuala Lumpur. A quick search online and presto! We found a gaggle of Nepali restaurants in and around the Medan Pasar area.

Truth be told, we first tried the Mandala Restaurant next door, but they declined to be filmed, so their loss is Hamro's gain?

Located within a clothes shop (Unique Fashion Collection Sdn Bhd) Hamro Nepali Restaurant occupies a small corner on the right side. Big thanks to Dipendra and Rabitha for having us, and yes, we will definitely come again!

SUNGAI WANG Plaza Walkabout

We were in Sungei Wang Plaza to run a few errands, while our son had an appointment with a hair stylist. It's good to see the place bustling with activity despite the on-going 'situation'. We do what we can to stimulate the economy and support local businesses, but uppermost in our minds is to always stay safe. It's also good to know that everyone here observes all related SOPs, it helps make us feel safer and reassured.

AJ SENSE SALON is a hair salon that our family has been coming to for a long time, way back when it was still known as Hair Republic. The rates are very reasonable and the staff courteous and experienced.

Eye Smart Vision Enterprise is also another establishment that we have been coming to at least once a year to do our glasses. Young and energetic, Jimmy never fails to impress us with his charm and excellent customer service.

We were in Sungei Wang Plaza to run a few errands, but more on that in the next blog. Vinh City Vietnam Cuisine has been a firm favourite of ours for many years, and we definitely recommend it.

JOE WONG Bak Kut Teh

It is the first weekend in the holy Muslim month of Ramadan. We ventured out to see if we could grab a bite to eat, since most eateries are supposed to be closed till early evening. Joe Wong Bak Kut Teh has been our default 1Bak Kut Teh place for many years, and we highly recommend it.

1a Chinese soup that literally means "meat bone tea", and at its simplest, consists of meaty pork ribs simmered in a complex broth of herbs and spices (including star anise, cinnamon, cloves, dang gui, fennel seeds and garlic) for hours. Additional ingredients may include offal, varieties of mushroom, choy sum, and pieces of dried tofu or fried tofu puffs. Additional Chinese herbs may include yu zhu (玉竹, rhizome of Solomon's Seal) and ju zhi (buckthorn fruit), which give the soup a sweeter, slightly stronger flavour. Light and dark soy sauce are also added to the soup during cooking and garnished with chopped coriander or green onions and a sprinkling of fried shallots, and usually eaten with rice.

Midnight Rain... We Begin Again!

It has truly been an awfully long while since our last blog. In that time, we experienced the ebb and flow of the pandemic, and it has been one heck of a roller-coaster ride.

We were very envious of some who have managed to make travelling a full-time profession, and dream of doing the same one day. Vlogging is the new way to go, long replacing the traditional blog as the medium of communication between the traveller and his audience.

To be perfectly honest we are painfully camera shy and will probably start off our vlogging attempts minus our faces and voices while focusing on the food or destination. A caption underneath each clip will be our means of communicating with our audience.

We have several cameras (though not all are meant for vlogging), and in time hope to invest in more suitable equipment. In the meantime, we will make do with what we have.

So, what better way to start off our attempt at vlogging than to showcase what’s right in front of us:

It was a warm and humid night, so the rain was a very pleasant surprise. First time shooting in Cinelike-D (LOG file) and first-time colour correcting. Loads more to learn, but at least it’s a start!
