Finally Trying Rubberduck

We had been meaning to try Rubberduck for the longest time, but the large crowds and long queues that usually snake along the walkway always discouraged us. Known for its outdoor dining setup — beach chairs, palm tree prints, and plenty of greenery — it’s a favourite among the Instagram crowd. It’s apparently pork free too.

This morning, luck was on our side. We arrived during that sweet spot between breakfast and lunch, when the crowd was in transition. Finding an empty table was surprisingly easy.

Our Aloha Brunch

After a moment of hesitation, we decided to go all out:

• Big Breakfast — RM29.00
• Morning Muffin — RM19.00
• Coconut Latte — RM13.00
• Berry Smoothie Bowl — RM18.00

Did we enjoy our alluring aloha brunch? Absolutely. The food was good, and the tropical ambiance added to the calm, relaxed vibe.

The Damage

The meal did attract taxes, bringing the total to RM83.75 (≈ USD19/EUR18). By our modest standards, it was an expensive brunch — but it was an experience we felt we had to try at least once.

WALDORF │ A Weekend (Again)

Escaping the Raya Congestion

There was a Hari Raya Aidilfitri Celebration at Dataran Merdeka today from 10:00am to 2:00pm, which meant the roads around our area would be either closed or heavily congested. To avoid the mayhem, we decided to spend the weekend at Waldorf Tower — again.

We left home at 9:30am and enjoyed a scenic half hour drive to Plaza Damas.

Brunch, Buns, and Coffee

Our first stop was Warung Soho to order their excellent Nasi Soho. The gravy wasn’t ready yet, so we were asked to return in fifteen minutes.

With time to spare, we strolled to Bread Aroma Bakery for our usual tuna cheese buns and their amazing mango peach buns. Then we walked over to ZUS Coffee — I ordered a Mocha Caffè Latte, while Cat tried the Iced Genmai Latte.

On the way back, we discovered a new eatery called D’Warung Khatijah, serving Malay and Indonesian dishes. Something to try for dinner, perhaps.

We returned to Warung Soho, collected our Nasi Soho, and headed up to the apartment.

A Quiet Afternoon

The entire afternoon was spent catching up on Star Wars on Disney+, followed by a refreshing nap.

Dinner Hunt at Dusk

At dusk, we went out in search of dinner. We checked D’Warung Khatijah, Don’s Warong, and Ju Ga & Cook Korean Food, but nothing matched our mood — we wanted something light.

So we walked into Hartamas Shopping Centre, crossed the pedestrian bridge, and took the elevator down to Plaza Damas 3.

Déjà vu — we ended up at Bestari again. I ordered Roti Sardin, while Cat had Fried Bee Hoon. After our simple dinner, we strolled back into Hartamas Shopping Centre, visited Mercato for groceries, then Mr DIY for a floor mat.

Our final errand was at KK Super Mart for beverages before returning to the apartment.

The Next Morning

We packed up and headed to Rubberduck for brunch — a place we usually avoid because of the crowds, but today we braved it. After the pricey brunch, we returned to Warung Soho for two more packets of Nasi Soho (as always), then made our way to the carpark and drove home.

And yes — we were already thinking about where to go next weekend.

From BNf to Beriani

After visiting the excellent Borneo Native Festival (BNf) at Pasar Seni (Central Market), we decided to have an early lunch at Tajudin, a place that holds a special place in my memories.

A Little Trip Down Memory Lane

A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away…

Well, actually in the late 1980s, I used to frequent Tajudin when it was still operating in a very narrow back alley — fondly called a lorong tikus (mice lane). Eating there meant braving sauna like heat, shoulder to shoulder crowds, and the unmistakable charm of old Kuala Lumpur.

About ten years ago, Tajudin moved to its current premises, and we were genuinely glad to see that he survived the difficult two pandemic years that forced many traders and eateries in the area to close.

The Meal

Without hesitation, we both ordered the Beriani Rice with Chicken. Together with a round of drinks, our absolutely delightful meal came to only RM22 (≈ USD/EUR5).

Simple, flavourful, comforting — the very definition of everyday food for the everyday person.

A KL Classic

A visit to Pasar Seni (Central Market) simply isn’t complete without experiencing Tajudin Nasi Beriani. Nuff said.

BORNEO Native Festival 2022!

Discovering the Borneo Native Festival

Cat read about the Borneo Native Festival (BNf) being held at Pasar Seni (Central Market), showcasing the culture and economy of our Bornean brethren from Sabah and Sarawak. With over 70 vendors promoting handicrafts, food, and beverages, it sounded too good to miss — so we made plans to visit this fine Saturday morning.

Hosted by SukaSeni, BNf celebrates indigenous communities through traditional art forms. The festival featured 20 performers, five cultural organisations, 15 government agencies, and 20 craft makers, artisans, dancers, and historians. It was a rare chance to experience Bornean culture up close, with hands on activities and plenty to explore.

A Celebration of Craft and Culture

The festival offered an impressive range of items — handcrafted wooden carvings, jewellery, woven baskets, bead necklaces, fabrics, batik, songket, paintings, and more. The three day celebration aimed to raise funds for local Bornean communities, helping artisans continue their craft without financial constraints.

When we arrived at Central Market, we were greeted by what felt like an endless row of stalls. Inside and outside, the atmosphere was lively and colourful.

We were especially drawn to the UNIMAS stall outside, where even more unique items were on display — including coffee and food products rarely found in Kuala Lumpur.

Browsing, Sampling, and Shopping

We spent a good amount of time browsing every stall. Cat took particular fancy to a stall selling Sabahan snacks and picked up a packet of Keropok Amplang Bikmie and Kuih Cincin.

Held from 20–22 May 2022, we truly hope BNf returns next year — and perhaps for an even longer run.

A Trip to Chow Kit

My guitar pedalboard had been acting up, and I suspected a faulty cable. The nearest guitar store was in Chow Kit, so we caught a Rapid KL #250 bus from the KL31 Hentian Munshi Abdullah stop. Fifteen minutes later, we got off at KL52 Chow Kit, crossed the busy Jalan Sultan Azlan Shah, and walked into DOREMi Music Store.

Unfortunately, they didn’t have the cable I needed. Perhaps I’ll have better luck online.

Bus Hopping Through the City

We walked back to Jalan Sultan Azlan Shah and waited for any Rapid KL bus under the KL52 Chow Kit Monorail station. After a while, we decided to try our luck at the main stop at KL69 Pasar Chow Kit instead.

Here, we caught a Rapid KL #173 bus that eventually dropped us off under the Masjid Jamek LRT Station. We crossed Jalan Tun Perak and continued along Jalan Benteng, passing Masjid Jamek, until we reached the Medan Pasar Clock Tower.

From there, we crossed Leboh Pasar Besar, walked along Jalan Hang Kasturi, and entered Central Market.

BNf and Brunch

We spent some time exploring the ongoing Borneo Native Festival, then headed to Restoran Tajudin Nasi Beriani nearby for brunch.

After eating, we retraced our steps back across Jalan Tun Perak and continued along Jalan Melayu. We walked through the former Jalan Masjid India Flea Market area and stopped by a pharmacy. Nearby was Mansion Tea Stall, so we picked up a packet of Teh Halia (Ginger Tea).

A Sudden Change of Plans

We continued walking until the end of Jalan Masjid India. Here, Cat and I split up — I received a call from the Citylink delivery guy saying he was already in front of our home with the chair I had ordered from Nitori earlier in the week.

While Cat headed to Burger King at Semua House to settle our dinner, I hurried home to receive the delivery.

Wrapping Up

And with that, our sauntering session came to an end. A simple weekend walkabout filled with buses, errands, and little surprises — just the way we like it.

A Public Holiday Morning

Yesterday was Wesak Day — also known as Buddha Jayanti, Buddha Purnima, and Buddha Day — a festival celebrated across South Asia, Southeast Asia, Tibet, and Mongolia. It commemorates the birth, enlightenment, and passing of Gautama Buddha. Since it fell on a Sunday, today was observed as a public holiday.

Bitten by the walkabout bug, we woke up reasonably early and headed to the Medan Tuanku Monorail Station near home. Ten minutes and five stops later, we arrived at Hang Tuah Monorail Station, right beside LaLaport BBCC, our destination for the day.

Coffee Before the Crowds

We were early, so before LaLaport opened, we sat down for morning coffee. Our compliments to the young barista at Monét LaLaport BBCC — excellent service and excellent coffee.

Once inside, we wandered around the main foyer, admiring the beautifully decorated lobby called “Vivid Eid.” Then we headed up to Level 3 to visit Nitori, the Japanese furniture and lifestyle store.

After some browsing, we bought a Kuroudo work chair — I wanted something with flip up armrests so they wouldn’t get in the way when I play guitar. Delivery would take a few days.

With time to spare, we browsed Nojima, the electrical store next door, but nothing caught our eye.

Brunch at Sai Kee

We headed down to the Lower Ground Level in search of brunch. The Kafeteria food court had limited options, and apart from Nang Haus, nothing appealed to us.

So we walked to the other end of the level and settled on Sai Kee Restaurant, which promised an “old school Cantonese Dai Chao experience.” Established in 1950 in a back lane of Petaling Street, Sai Kee is considered one of the pioneer Chinese food stalls in Chinatown.

I had Chicken with Bitter Gourd and rice, while Cat tried the Nyonya Style Fish Fillet and rice. Both meals came with Jasmine tea and cost RM13.90 each — very reasonable for the location. The taste was just okay, and we doubt we’ll be returning.

A Quick Errand and a Drink

We went in search of a clinic for some ointment and, with help from a friendly security guard, found one on Level 4. Mediviron Clinic was closed, but the exit led to a lovely courtyard where we enjoyed the view for a while.

Back on the Lower Ground Level, Cat wanted to try Nang Haus, so we stopped for drinks before leaving LaLaport.

Heading Home

We walked to Hang Tuah LRT Station, and within five minutes and three stops, we arrived at Bandaraya LRT Station. Ten minutes later, we were back home — and that wrapped up our video for the day.

Weekend Wander │ WALDORF

The Long Drive Back

After our sumptuous seafood feast at Baywatch Restaurant in Tanjung Sepat, we drove back north to Waldorf Tower, to the studio apartment my sister had left in our care.

Traffic was unusually heavy — we suspected everyone was out visiting open houses. What was normally a leisurely 1.5 hour drive stretched into almost three hours, and by the time we reached Waldorf Tower, evening had already settled in.

Settling In

As soon as we arrived, I headed straight to my favourite barbershop and was pleasantly surprised that Kumar could attend to me immediately. After the haircut, we walked to a nearby convenience store for refreshments and stopped by our favourite bakery for pastries on the way back.

Back at the apartment, I set up the DJI Pocket 2 on a tripod to capture the thunderstorm outside and the sunset that was due in an hour. We spent the next few hours resting before heading out in search of dinner.

A Familiar Favourite

Remember our favourite Mamak restaurant, Bestari, that closed down? Well — good news! The other outlet across Hartamas Shopping Centre, at Plaza Damas 3, was still alive and kicking.

We crossed the pedestrian bridge in glee and ordered our usuals:

• Roti Sardin for me
• Fried Bee Hoon for Cat

Simple, comforting, and exactly what we needed.

The Next Morning

We woke up thinking we’d order breakfast through GrabFood, but there were no McDonald’s serving the area. So I spent some time editing yesterday’s clips before we showered, packed, and headed out for brunch.

As always, we made it a point to visit Warung Soho for their delicious Nasi Soho. After brunch, we drove back home — another cosy Waldorf Tower weekend in the books.

DJI POCKET 2: Time-Lapse Take 5

Another Day, Another Downpour

As we mentioned in our previous timelapse blog, we are now in the first inter monsoonal period here in Kuala Lumpur. Outside the monsoon seasons it can rain at any time — this is Malaysia, after all, a tropical country through and through.

Today was no exception. A proper thunderstorm rolled in and lasted well over an hour, giving us the perfect opportunity for our fifth attempt at timelapse photography.

Setting Up the Shot

From the balcony of my sister’s studio apartment at Waldorf Tower, we focused on the Kuala Lumpur skyline as dark clouds gathered and lightning flashed in the distance.

We set the DJI Pocket 2 to capture one frame every three seconds, over a duration of two hours — one hour before the storm peaked and one hour after. No filters were used; we relied on the lens au naturel, with only the stock wide angle attachment to widen the field of view.

Our Final Instalment… For Now

This should be our fifth and final timelapse instalment — unless, of course, a brand new and interesting location presents itself to us. With Kuala Lumpur’s unpredictable skies, you never know.

Weekend Wander │ Restoran BAYWATCH Tanjung Sepat

From Mitsui to the Coast

With our mini shopping excursion done and dusted, we drove south from Mitsui Outlet Park Sepang to the beach town of Tanjung Sepat, about an hour away. We had meant to visit a few weeks earlier during our Morib trip, but the massive Eid Fitr crowds kept us away.

The name Tanjung Sepat comes from tanjung (cape) and sepat (a type of fish). Once a thriving fishing village, the industry has slowed due to pollution in the Straits of Malacca, but fishing remains part of daily life here.

A Quick Stop at the Temple

We parked at a Buddhist temple loosely translated as the Five Thunder Immortals Master Gong Ancient Temple and explored the surroundings briefly. But our real mission was clear — seafood, and plenty of it.

A Feast at Baywatch Restaurant

We settled on Baywatch Restaurant, which offered an excellent view of the beach. The owner, a friendly and patient lady, guided us through the menu, and we eventually ordered:

Absolutely. I devoured the Grouper fish, cooked in a fragrant homemade paste that I suspected included belacan. I barely touched the crabs — Cat happily took care of those. It was our first proper seafood meal since the pandemic, and it felt like a long overdue treat.

The Damage

To our delight, the meal came without any service charge, bringing the total to RM165.00 (≈ USD38/EUR36). Normally this would be considered an extravagant meal, but since we stayed home throughout the Eid Fitr period, we felt it was fully justified.

With full bellies and happy hearts, we wrapped up our Tanjung Sepat adventure — a well deserved feast after weeks of staying in.

A Little Gallivanting

After a week of mostly staying home, we decided to gallivant a little this weekend and kicked things off with a drive to Mitsui Outlet Park Sepang, located near KLIA. A change of scenery was exactly what we needed.

Coffee First, Always

Our first stop was Starbucks for some much needed sustenance. With a refreshing cup of coffee in hand, we began our walkabout around the outlet.

New Shoes, New Socks, New Treats

We headed to the Skechers store, where I picked up a new pair of sneakers — perfect for our frequent brisk walks to and from Lake Gardens.

Next, we stopped by Beryl’s to get our usual two jars of Raisin Milk Chocolate. A must buy every time we visit Mitsui.

Our final stop was the Puma store, where we redeemed an RM51.32 voucher. With the voucher and additional discounts, I managed to get six pairs of fluffy new ankle socks for only RM39.00 — again, for our Lake Gardens walks.

Wrapping Up

With our little shopping venture complete, we headed back to the car and drove to our next destination of the day — so please stay tuned.

Eid Fitr in Kuala Lumpur │ Pavilion Kuala Lumpur and Beyond!

A Quiet Eid in Kuala Lumpur

It is the seventh day of Syawal, and we spent the Eid Fitr period entirely — well, almost — in Kuala Lumpur. Brendan returned from Kuching on 26 April for a ten day break, and apart from a sleepover at a friend’s place, he too spent most of the time at home.

A Trip to Pavilion… and an Unpleasant Ride

We did make one outing to Pavilion Kuala Lumpur to enjoy the festive decorations, but the experience was dampened by an unpleasant Grab ride. With most riders and drivers leaving the city for the long holiday, the quality of service took a noticeable dip.

Raya Arrived Early

Everyone expected Hari Raya Aidilfitri to fall on Tuesday, 2 May, so it came as a shock when it was announced a day earlier. Overnight, the city erupted into frantic last minute shopping and a massive exodus out of Kuala Lumpur.

We did not join the exodus. Instead, we listened to story after story of nightmarish traffic jams along every major highway leaving the city.

A Simple Raya for Us

On the first day of Hari Raya, we took a drive to Morib Beach while Brendan stayed over at a friend’s place. A few days later, he flew back to Kuching. We spent the sixth day of Syawal at one of our favourite nearby malls, enjoying the quiet atmosphere.

A Pause in Our Vlogs

Out of respect for our Muslim friends, we will only resume our regular vlog posts at the end of the month of Syawal. It feels right to give space to the celebrations and family gatherings happening all around us.

Another Inter Monsoonal Downpour

We are now in the first inter monsoonal period here in Kuala Lumpur. Outside the monsoon seasons, it can rain at almost any time — Malaysia is, after all, a tropical destination.

Today was no exception. A proper thunderstorm rolled in and lasted well over an hour, giving us the perfect opportunity for our fourth attempt at timelapse photography.

Capturing the Storm

This time, we focused on the Kuala Lumpur skyline from several perspectives — first during the thunderstorm, and later as dusk approached.

For the storm sequence, we set the DJI Pocket 2 to capture one frame every three seconds, over a duration of two hours:

• one hour before the storm peaked
• one hour after

Later, using the exact same settings, we captured the sunset, again one hour before and one hour after. There were no filters attached; we relied on the lens au naturel.

Another Piece of KL’s Sky

Each timelapse feels like a small window into the city’s moods — from dark clouds and lightning to the soft glow of dusk. This fourth instalment adds another chapter to our little KL skyline series.

MKZ Day 5 │ BABA LOW @ Tranquerah

Leaving on (not) a Jet Plane

All good things had to come to an end.

After four wonderful days in Melaka, it was finally time for us to head back to Kuala Lumpur. We checked out of our cozy apartment at 9:00am—many thanks again to Victor for the stay—but we knew there was one last stop we had to make before leaving.

A Final Taste of Baba Low

Some of you might know Baba Low in Bangsar, Kuala Lumpur. This, however, was where it all began.

The original Baba Low stall was a small, humble roadside setup nestled under a large mango tree. It was simple, open air, and full of character, with old school stools and tables adding to its charm.

Fun fact—the Bangsar outlet, Baba Low 486, was named after the lot number of this very stall.

Breakfast Before the Journey

We couldn’t leave without giving it a try. We ordered:

• Nasi Lemak
• Drinks

Our breakfast came to just RM13.30 (≈ USD3/EUR3)—simple, satisfying, and full of flavour.

One Last Moment

Sitting there beneath the trees, enjoying our final meal in Melaka, it all felt a little slower. A little quieter.

Back to Kuala Lumpur

With full stomachs, we got back into Puteh and began the drive home.

The journey took about two hours, giving us just enough time to reflect on the past few days—good food, familiar streets, and moments we would remember long after.

Lunch at The Daily Fix

Our morning actually began with a Grab ride from Mahkota Residence to The Daily Fix Café. We had set our hearts on breakfast here—but alas, we arrived a little too early and found ourselves having to make other plans.

What followed was an unexpected detour: a walkabout around town, a haircut, and even a spontaneous bus ride. By the time we finally made our way back, it was already lunchtime—and thankfully, this time, The Daily Fix was open.

Worth the Wait

The café was small and cosy, tucked away with a limited number of seats. Being lunchtime, it was quite busy, and we had to wait a while before a table became available.

Still, the wait was worth it—even just for the atmosphere.

The place had a warm, rustic charm, and once we sat down, the earlier frustrations of the morning melted away.

Lunch at Last

After browsing the menu, we ordered:

• Carbonara – RM17.50
• Duck Aglio Olio – RM17.50
• Watermelon Mint Juice – RM13.00
• Papaya Smoothie – RM13.00

With service charge and tax adding RM10.10, our bill came to RM71.10 (≈ USD16/EUR15).

Worth the Price?

We had to admit—it was a little pricey by our usual standards.

But sometimes, it wasn’t just about the food.

The atmosphere, the setting, and the feeling of finally arriving after a long morning all came together to make the experience worthwhile.

MKZ Day 4 │ Panorama MELAKA Bus Ride

Bus Ride Adventure

After my haircut, we stepped out onto Jalan Bendahara with no clear plan—just the feeling that we should keep moving. That’s when we had a simple idea: why not hop on a bus and see where it took us?

From Town to Dataran Pahlawan

We caught a Panorama Melaka bus near Flat 9 Tingkat and headed toward Dataran Pahlawan. About twenty minutes later, we got off—only to board another Panorama bus shortly after, this time heading to Melaka Sentral.

And just like that, our small errand turned into a mini sightseeing tour.

A Tour Around Melaka

The bus rolled through the city at an easy pace, taking us past:

• Jalan Merdeka
• Jalan Parameswara
• Jalan Bukit Senjuang
• Jalan Ujong Pasir
• Jalan Padang Temu

We looped through residential areas, passed familiar buildings like Pangsapuri Hilir Kota, where we stayed on our first night, and continued along Jalan Syed Abdul Aziz past our apartment at Mahkota Residence.

The route then brought us through:

• Jalan Tun Tan Cheng Lock
• Jalan Kubu near Jonker Walk
• Jalan Hang Tuah and Jalan Tun Ali

Before finally merging onto roads leading toward Melaka Sentral.

It felt like we were seeing the city from a different angle—slowly, comfortably, and without effort.

Turning Back

At Melaka Sentral, we didn’t linger long. Instead, we hopped onto another Panorama bus heading back toward town.

The return journey was smooth and uneventful, and before long, we found ourselves back near The Stadthuys, right in the heart of historic Melaka.

A Budget Sightseeing Hack

And just like that, our spontaneous bus ride came to an end.

The best part?

The entire journey cost us less than RM5.00 (≈ USD1/EUR1). For such a small amount, we got a relaxed, scenic tour of the city—without the need to plan or rush.

A Hidden Gem

Sometimes, the simplest ideas turn out to be the most enjoyable.

If you were visiting Melaka on a budget, this was easily one of the most effortless ways to explore the city.

And for us, it was a reminder that adventure didn’t always need a destination—just a willingness to hop on and go.

Melaka Trip Day 4

After our breakfast at Restoran Kok Keong, we had a simple plan for the morning. I wanted to revisit an old favourite barber in Kampung Jawa—a place that held years of quiet familiarity.

A Sad Discovery

When we arrived, we found the shop closed. Hoping it was just for the day, we asked a kind neighbour nearby.

It was then we learned the truth.

Uncle Tan had passed away.

The news hit harder than expected. He was more than just a barber—he was part of our past visits to Melaka; someone we had come to know over the years.

We stood there quietly for a moment, taking it in.

Rest in peace, Uncle Tan.

A Necessary Alternative

The morning was already warm, and with the heat rising quickly, we still needed to find a haircut. So we made our way to Little India, just a short distance away.

There, we found Kedai Gunting Rambut Nathan.

A Good Replacement

The shop was simple, no frills, and welcoming. A young Indian barber attended to me, taking care of what little hair I had left with care and attention.

The result was neat, comfortable, and exactly what we needed.

If you happened to be in the area, this was definitely a place we would recommend.

Moving On

It wasn’t the morning we had planned, but it was one that stayed with us.

MKZ Day 4 │ Restoran KOK KEONG

A Minor Setback, Then a Pleasant Surprise

Our morning began with a small disappointment — our intended breakfast spot, The Daily Fix Café, was still not open for business. Undeterred, we continued walking for a short while until we arrived at Restoran Kok Keong, a diminutive eatery tucked across Lorong Jambatan.

Despite its size, the restaurant was clearly well loved. The tables were filling up quickly, always a good sign.

A Unique Breakfast

As always, we ordered two servings of their house specialty: 豬肉羹, which Cat could only loosely translate as pork soup or pork stew.

The dish reminded us slightly of Bak Kut Teh, but this version had its own character — rich, flavourful, and deeply comforting. Paired with their distinctive yam rice, it made for a breakfast experience unlike anything we’ve had before.

The total came to RM24 (≈ USD6/EUR5), which felt very reasonable considering how unique and satisfying the meal was.

A Good Start to the Day

It wasn’t the breakfast we originally planned, but it turned out to be a memorable one — the kind of simple, authentic meal that makes our Melaka trips so enjoyable.

MKZ Day 4 │ Meandering around Melaka!

A Morning in Jonker

Our morning began with a Grab ride from Mahkota Residence to the general area of Jonker Walk. Cat had read about a café that caught her interest, but when we arrived, The Daily Fix Café had not yet opened for business.

Undeterred, we continued northeast along Jalan Hang Lekiu until its very end, then turned right onto Jalan Kampung Pantai. A short walk later, we arrived at Restoran Kok Keong for breakfast.

A Sad Discovery in Kampung Jawa

About thirty five minutes later, we crossed Jalan Kampung Pantai and continued along Lorong Jambatan, walking across Jambatan Kampung Jawa. I had planned to visit an old favourite barber here in Kampung Jawa.

But when we reached Tan You Hock’s barbershop, it was closed. A kind neighbour a few doors down informed us — to our immense sadness — that Uncle Tan had passed away.

May you rest in peace, Uncle.

Into Little India

We continued east along Kampung Jawa, then turned right onto Jalan Bunga Raya, passing Taj Grand Hotel, looping around until we reached Jalan Bendehara — the heart of Little India.

Walking north along Jalan Bendehara, we found Kedai Gunting Rambut Nathan, another barbershop. What little hair I had left was well taken care of, and within an hour we were heading back south along the same road.

Bus Hopping Around Melaka

We caught a Panorama Melaka bus at Flat 9 Tingkat to Dataran Pahlawan, where we ran a few errands. Twenty minutes later, we hopped onto another Panorama Melaka bus to Melaka Sentral.

From there, we boarded yet another Panorama Melaka bus back to town and soon disembarked at The Stadthuys. We walked to Jonker Walk and, after a short stroll, finally arrived at our first destination of the morning — The Daily Fix Café, now open.

We had lunch there before hailing a Grab back to Mahkota Residence.

Wrapping Up Day 4

We spent the rest of the day at the apartment as I worked through the voluminous amount of footage we had shot earlier. Tomorrow, we’ll be heading back home to Kuala Lumpur — and we’re already feeling a little reluctant. 😒

MKZ Day 3 │ AMIGO Steak & Grill

A Slow Afternoon

After our long morning walkabout that ended at Dataran Pahlawan, we packed a rice set from Wong Kok and had it for lunch back at our apartment. I spent the afternoon editing our videos, and before we knew it, evening had arrived.

A Much Needed Massage

We went out in search of a reflexology centre nearby and settled on 55 Thai Massage. It was our first foot massage since the pandemic, and the therapists had quite a challenge working through the knots in our feet and shoulders.

An hour later, we emerged from 55 Thai Massage shaken but not stirred — bruised, yes, but also strangely refreshed.

Dinner at Amigo Steak & Grill

Since we were already in the area, we decided to have an early dinner at Amigo Steak & Grill, a place that has been one of our firm favourites for a while now. Ordering through the QR code was quick and easy, and we settled on:

• Mozzarella Chicken Chop — RM25.00
• Mushroom Chicken Chop — RM12.00
• Extra large Honey Dew Juice — RM11.20
• Extra large Carrot Juice with Milk — RM12.20

We were a little less thrilled to see a service charge of RM4.00, bringing the total to RM70.25 (≈ USD16/EUR15). It was pricier than our usual meals, but after that intense massage session, we had already planned to go all out for dinner.

Wrapping Up Day 3

With full stomachs and slightly tender feet, we ended our evening on a satisfying note — a fitting close to a long, active day in Melaka.

MKZ Day 3 │ MELAKA River Walk

Starting the Morning Right

After breakfast at Mei Sin Café, we made our way to Kampung Morten to begin our river walk. It was a quiet morning with hardly anyone around — the calm that often comes during the holy month of Ramadan.

We had planned to start at the Ruins of Ermida de Rosario (Rosary Chapel), but the wooden walkway along The Shore was closed, likely due to erosion. So we adjusted our route and crossed the first bridge of the day: the Kampung Morten Bridge.

Bridge by Bridge

From the bridge, we walked due north along Jalan Kampung Morten until we reached Lorong Tun Mamat 1, where the second bridge — Jambatan Datuk Mohd Zin — awaited. We continued onto Jalan Tun Mamat, then Jalan Tun Ali, forming an upside down U shaped loop.

Next came the third bridge, the Old Bus Station Bridge, where we rejoined the river and continued our walk.

We passed the fourth bridge, Jambatan Hang Tuah, and continued southeast. Soon after, we reached the fifth bridge, Jambatan Pasar, and walked south along Jalan Baru until we arrived at Jalan Kampung Jawa.

The “Gates to Hell”

Here stood perhaps the most famous — or infamous — bridge of all: the sixth bridge, Jambatan Kampung Jawa, nicknamed the “Gates to Hell.” Local stories claim that people were beheaded here during the Japanese Occupation in the 1940s. Whether myth or memory, the bridge remains one of Melaka’s most talked about landmarks.

We continued south to the very end of the river walkway, passing the seventh bridge, the Bridge of Chan Koon Cheng, before walking past the Church of St. Francis Xavier. Before long, we reached The Stadthuys.

The Final Bridge

We ended our river walk — which could easily be called our bridge spotting walkabout — at the eighth and final bridge, the Tan Kim Seng Bridge.

MKZ Day 3 │ Walkabout: The Stadthuys and Beyond!

Back to Full Strength

The last time we were in Melaka, we were still recovering from a Covid 19 infection and weren’t at full strength. This time, we were almost back to peak health — and eager for another proper walkabout.

We planned to take a Grabcar to Mei Sin Café in the Bunga Raya area, but at 8am there were no drivers available. So we decided to walk the entire way from Mahkota Residence — a good 2 kilometres — at a relaxed morning pace.

The Long Walk to Breakfast

We left Mahkota Residence, crossed Jalan Syed Abdul Aziz, and headed north along Jalan Mahkota, passing Mahkota Parade. After crossing Jalan Merdeka, we turned left for a short stretch before turning right at Dataran Pahlawan, continuing north along Jalan Taman.

We reached Jalan Kota, turned left, and walked northwest past a row of museums until we met Jalan Merdeka again. From there, we turned right onto Jalan Laksamana, walking past The Stadthuys, the Melaka Clock Tower, and Christ Church.

We crossed Jalan Laksamana and continued northeast along a row of old heritage shop lots until we reached the Church of St. Francis Xavier. At the fork, we chose Jalan Bunga Raya, heading north.

A Street Full of Memories

Jalan Bunga Raya holds a special place in our hearts — it was where we spent most of our time back when the Ramada Plaza Hotel still existed. We continued north, passing Cat’s favourite Teck Ann Chinese Medicine shop, until we reached the intersection with Jalan Munshi Abdullah.

We crossed the road and walked a little further before finally arriving at our chosen breakfast spot: Mei Sin Café.

A Riverside Morning

After breakfast, we began our river walk — strolling the entire stretch from Kampung Morten all the way to Hard Rock Café. From there, we doubled back along Jalan Laksamana, then Jalan Merdeka, and finally Jalan Kota before reaching Dataran Pahlawan, where we ended our morning walk.

MKZ Day 2 │ LU YEH YEN Restaurant

A Slow, Easy Morning

We spent the entire morning at Pangsapuri Hilir Kota, enjoying a simple McDonald’s breakfast. True to his word, at noon Victor gave us the go ahead to move into our preferred unit at Mahkota Residence.

Once we settled in, Cat immediately busied herself with laundry, while I continued editing the clips from yesterday’s adventures.

A Simple Lunch and a Lazy Afternoon

Lunchtime arrived and we ordered a simple fried rice meal through GrabFood. After eating, I took an afternoon nap while Cat caught up on current affairs on her tablet.

An Empty Melaka City

I woke up in the evening, and we set out for a leisurely drive around Melaka City. The streets were surprisingly empty — most likely because our Muslim friends were preparing for the breaking of fast.

We reached Lu Yeh Yen a little after six and, without hesitation, ordered:

• Dried Chilli Fried Chicken — RM12.00
• Sweet & Sour Pork — RM12.00
• Salted Vegetable Soup with Tofu — RM10.00
• Large Omelette — RM6.00
• Large pot of Rice — RM3.00

Three months later and we found ourselves back in Melaka. This trip was so last minute that our ever reliable Airbnb Superhost, Victor, practically had to move heaven and earth to fit us into his schedule. We had hoped to stay at Mahkota Residence again, but it was fully booked until the next day.

A Quiet Stay at Pangsapuri Hilir Kota

Until then, Victor arranged for us to stay one night at an excellent 3 bedroom ground floor apartment at Pangsapuri Hilir Kota. Nestled among newer high rises, this older housing complex was surprisingly quiet and peaceful — a lovely contrast to the bustle of Melaka City.

True to form, Victor proved once again why he is a Superhost in more ways than one. The apartment was clean, comfortable, and thoughtfully prepared. If not for the absence of a washing machine, it would have been absolutely perfect.

A Ramadhan Getaway

Two weeks into the holy month of Ramadhan, we decided to take a short break from the concrete jungle of Kuala Lumpur. Our favourite Airbnb Superhost, Victor, managed to secure a place for us, and after a leisurely two hour drive south, we arrived in Melaka City.

Since it was already lunchtime, we headed straight to Baba Charlie Café. From its humble beginnings in a narrow, inconspicuous lane making traditional Nyonya kuih, Baba Charlie has grown into a full café serving a wide range of Nyonya dishes.

Nyonya — descendants of Southern Chinese settlers in maritime Southeast Asia

Kuih — bite sized traditional snacks or desserts

Lunch at Baba Charlie Café

Hunger pangs meant we forgot to film the menu, but trust us — the selection was extensive. After a quick scan, we settled on:

• Ponteh Chicken Rice Set — RM7.90
• Chili Garam Fish Steak Rice — RM23.90
• Assorted beverages

Pongteh — braised meat with potatoes in fermented bean paste and soy sauce

Chili Garam Fish — Nyonya style baked fish with chilli paste

The best part? No service charge. Our meal came to a very reasonable RM38.30 (≈ USD9/EUR8).

Kuih Shopping Spree

Of course, no visit to Baba Charlie is complete without kuih. We bought ten servings’ worth of our favourites for RM40.50 (≈ USD10/EUR9). Among them were:

• Ang Koo — red tortoise kuih with mung bean filling
• Kochi — glutinous rice flour with coconut and palm sugar
• Kuih Lapis — colourful steamed layered pudding
• Pulut Tekan — blue tinted glutinous rice with kaya
• Seri Muka — glutinous rice topped with pandan custard
• Talam — steamed coconut milk and rice flour kuih

Each piece was a reminder of why Melaka remains the heart of Nyonya heritage.

100th Video Special: To LAKE GARDENS and Back

It’s Our 100th Vlog on YouTube! 🎉

This one felt special.

To celebrate both our 100th vlog and the first anniversary of our channel, we wanted to do something different—something that showed a side of Kuala Lumpur that many might not know existed.

Most of our past walkabouts had taken place in malls and city streets—what we liked to call our urban jungle. But today, we were heading somewhere greener.

A Different Side of KL

We began our walk as we often did, along Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman (TAR), heading south before turning into a small alley toward Lorong Gombak, then continuing along Jalan Palestin.

From there, we reached Jalan Raja Laut, heading south and crossing Jalan Parlimen before arriving at Jalan Raja.

This stretch was filled with some of Kuala Lumpur’s most iconic landmarks:

• Dataran Merdeka
• Sultan Abdul Samad Building
• The Zero Mile Marker
• The Tallest Flagpole in Malaysia
• Kuala Lumpur City Gallery

It was a reminder of how much history sat right in the heart of the city.

Into the Green Lung

We continued along Jalan Sultan Hishamuddin, then turned onto Jalan Cenderasari.

And just like that, we entered Kuala Lumpur’s green lung.

The change was immediate. The noise faded, replaced by trees, open space, and cool shade.

We walked past:

• Tanglin Health Clinic
• Kuala Lumpur Butterfly Park

Before arriving at Taman Etnobotani.

Lake Gardens

Crossing over to Jalan Tembusu, we soon reached the entrance to Lake Gardens, also known as the Perdana Botanical Garden.

Here, the city felt far away.

We followed tree lined paths, circled the lake, and crossed bridges leading to:

• The Bamboo Playhouse
• Quiet garden corners
• The Oasis Garden Waterfall

The area was vast, peaceful, and incredibly refreshing.

The Final Stretch

We continued along Jalan Kebun Bunga, eventually passing:

• Fantasy Planet & Dinosaur Park
• The Royal Lake Club

From there, we made our way toward Jalan Parlimen, walked past Padang Merbok, and crossed through the underpass near Bulatan Dato Onn.

Soon enough, we were back in familiar territory along Jalan Raja Laut.

One Last Stop

No walkabout of ours ever ended without food.

We stopped by our favourite mamak spot, Sithique Nasi Kandar Pulau Pinang, along Jalan TAR to grab some Roti Canai with Mutton Curry to take home.

Just as we wrapped up, the rain came pouring down.

Camera safely tucked away, we ran all the way home.

A Walk Worth Remembering

• Total distance: 7.31 kilometres
• Total feeling: worth it

We were completely exhausted—but in the best way possible.

Looking Back

This walk reminded us why we started.

Not just to film malls or meals—but to explore, experience, and share the places we loved, especially those hidden in plain sight.

Kuala Lumpur wasn’t just a city of buildings—it had spaces to breathe, to slow down, and to reconnect.

And for our 100th vlog, we couldn’t have asked for a better way to show it.
