Road Trip to Kuala Terengganu
Almost three weeks after I recovered from Covid 19, we were finally headed northeast to Kuala Terengganu. The trip felt like a much needed reset — physically and mentally.
The last time we were in my hometown was June last year. Before returning to Kuala Lumpur, we left the gate keys with a neighbour who has been keeping an eye on the house and tending to the plants. Thank you, Heng!
The Drive Up the East Coast
We left our condo before dawn and began the long drive up the east coast. We passed the Gombak Toll Plaza at 6:30am, exited at Bentong an hour later, then continued past the Karak Toll Plaza onto the Lebuhraya Pantai Timur (LPT).
We reached the Temerloh R&R at 7:40am and had a simple breakfast of Nasi Lemak and Noodles with Soup. With drinks, breakfast came to RM26.00 (≈ USD6/EUR5).
Forty five minutes later, we resumed our drive. Two hours on the LPT brought us to the Kuala Terengganu Toll Plaza, and from there we headed straight to town for lunch.
Lunch at OTW Kopitiam
We were determined to eat at our perennial favourite, Chuan Kee Chicken Rice, but by noon they were already sold out. So we drove to On The Way (OTW) Kopitiam along Jalan Pesisir Payang — and were lucky to get a seat before the crowd poured in.
We ordered our usual:
- Laksa Kuah Merah
- Laksa Kuah Puteh
- Laksam Kuah Puteh
- Rojak Betik
- French Fries
- Iced Tea with Evaporated Milk
- Iced Lemon Tea
- Apple Juice
Lunch came to RM66.40 (≈ USD16/EUR14).
Returning to My Late Aunty’s Home
At 1:00pm, we drove to my late Aunty’s home, eager to check on the place. Last June, we hired a cleaning crew for a full spring cleaning — 14 hours of intense work and two lorry trips’ worth of junk removed.
Slowly but surely, we hope to restore this home to its former glory and turn it into a family “homestay” of sorts.
We unloaded a few items we brought along, including a solar spotlight to replace the faulty back lamp. While Cat washed the downstairs toilet with its newly installed bowl and cistern, I inspected the electrical outlets one by one.
Checking In at MS Resthouse
We then drove a short distance to MS Resthouse, located on the same street, and checked in. We booked two rooms for four nights at RM99 (≈ USD25/EUR21) per room per night. Since the house now has a working washing machine, we no longer needed accommodation with laundry facilities.
We stayed in Room 7A, while Brendan was across the corridor in Room 2A. Exhausted from the early start, we slept for three hours and woke up at 5:30pm.
What’s Next
Stay tuned — next, we head back to the house before going out for dinner.
