MKZ Day 4 │ Kedai Gunting Rambut Nathan (In Memory of TAN YOU HOCK)

Melaka Trip Day 4

After our breakfast at Restoran Kok Keong, we had a simple plan for the morning. I wanted to revisit an old favourite barber in Kampung Jawa—a place that held years of quiet familiarity.

A Sad Discovery

When we arrived, we found the shop closed. Hoping it was just for the day, we asked a kind neighbour nearby.

It was then we learned the truth.

Uncle Tan had passed away.

The news hit harder than expected. He was more than just a barber—he was part of our past visits to Melaka; someone we had come to know over the years.
We stood there quietly for a moment, taking it in.

Rest in peace, Uncle Tan.

A Necessary Alternative

The morning was already warm, and with the heat rising quickly, we still needed to find a haircut. So we made our way to Little India, just a short distance away.

There, we found Kedai Gunting Rambut Nathan.

A Good Replacement

The shop was simple, no frills, and welcoming. A young Indian barber attended to me, taking care of what little hair I had left with care and attention.

The result was neat, comfortable, and exactly what we needed.

If you happened to be in the area, this was definitely a place we would recommend.

Moving On

It wasn’t the morning we had planned, but it was one that stayed with us.

Sometimes, travel wasn’t just about places—it was about the people we met along the way, and the memories they left behind.

MKZ Day 4 │ Restoran KOK KEONG

A Minor Setback, Then a Pleasant Surprise

Our morning began with a small disappointment — our intended breakfast spot, The Daily Fix Café, was still not open for business. Undeterred, we continued walking for a short while until we arrived at Restoran Kok Keong, a diminutive eatery tucked across Lorong Jambatan.

Despite its size, the restaurant was clearly well loved. The tables were filling up quickly, always a good sign.

A Unique Breakfast

As always, we ordered two servings of their house specialty: 豬肉羹, which Cat could only loosely translate as pork soup or pork stew.

The dish reminded us slightly of Bak Kut Teh, but this version had its own character — rich, flavourful, and deeply comforting. Paired with their distinctive yam rice, it made for a breakfast experience unlike anything we’ve had before.

The total came to RM24 (≈ USD6/EUR5), which felt very reasonable considering how unique and satisfying the meal was.

A Good Start to the Day

It wasn’t the breakfast we originally planned, but it turned out to be a memorable one — the kind of simple, authentic meal that makes our Melaka trips so enjoyable.

MKZ Day 4 │ Meandering around Melaka!

A Morning in Jonker

Our morning began with a Grab ride from Mahkota Residence to the general area of Jonker Walk. Cat had read about a café that caught her interest, but when we arrived, The Daily Fix Café had not yet opened for business.

Undeterred, we continued northeast along Jalan Hang Lekiu until its very end, then turned right onto Jalan Kampung Pantai. A short walk later, we arrived at Restoran Kok Keong for breakfast.

A Sad Discovery in Kampung Jawa

About thirty five minutes later, we crossed Jalan Kampung Pantai and continued along Lorong Jambatan, walking across Jambatan Kampung Jawa. I had planned to visit an old favourite barber here in Kampung Jawa.

But when we reached Tan You Hock’s barbershop, it was closed. A kind neighbour a few doors down informed us — to our immense sadness — that Uncle Tan had passed away.
May you rest in peace, Uncle.

Into Little India

We continued east along Kampung Jawa, then turned right onto Jalan Bunga Raya, passing Taj Grand Hotel, looping around until we reached Jalan Bendehara — the heart of Little India.

Walking north along Jalan Bendehara, we found Kedai Gunting Rambut Nathan, another barbershop. What little hair I had left was well taken care of, and within an hour we were heading back south along the same road.

Bus Hopping Around Melaka

We caught a Panorama Melaka bus at Flat 9 Tingkat to Dataran Pahlawan, where we ran a few errands. Twenty minutes later, we hopped onto another Panorama Melaka bus to Melaka Sentral.

From there, we boarded yet another Panorama Melaka bus back to town and soon disembarked at The Stadthuys. We walked to Jonker Walk and, after a short stroll, finally arrived at our first destination of the morning — The Daily Fix Café, now open.

We had lunch there before hailing a Grab back to Mahkota Residence.

Wrapping Up Day 4

We spent the rest of the day at the apartment as I worked through the voluminous amount of footage we had shot earlier. Tomorrow, we’ll be heading back home to Kuala Lumpur — and we’re already feeling a little reluctant. 😒

MKZ Day 3 │ AMIGO Steak & Grill

A Slow Afternoon

After our long morning walkabout that ended at Dataran Pahlawan, we packed a rice set from Wong Kok and had it for lunch back at our apartment. I spent the afternoon editing our videos, and before we knew it, evening had arrived.

A Much Needed Massage

We went out in search of a reflexology centre nearby and settled on 55 Thai Massage. It was our first foot massage since the pandemic, and the therapists had quite a challenge working through the knots in our feet and shoulders.

An hour later, we emerged from 55 Thai Massage shaken but not stirred — bruised, yes, but also strangely refreshed.

Dinner at Amigo Steak & Grill

Since we were already in the area, we decided to have an early dinner at Amigo Steak & Grill, a place that has been one of our firm favourites for a while now. Ordering through the QR code was quick and easy, and we settled on:

  • Mozzarella Chicken Chop — RM25.00
  • Mushroom Chicken Chop — RM12.00
  • Extra large Honey Dew Juice — RM11.20
  • Extra large Carrot Juice with Milk — RM12.20

We were a little less thrilled to see a service charge of RM4.00, bringing the total to RM70.25 (≈ USD16/EUR15). It was pricier than our usual meals, but after that intense massage session, we had already planned to go all out for dinner.

Wrapping Up Day 3

With full stomachs and slightly tender feet, we ended our evening on a satisfying note — a fitting close to a long, active day in Melaka.

MKZ Day 3 │ MELAKA River Walk

Starting the Morning Right

After breakfast at Mei Sin Café, we made our way to Kampung Morten to begin our river walk. It was a quiet morning with hardly anyone around — the calm that often comes during the holy month of Ramadan.

We had planned to start at the Ruins of Ermida de Rosario (Rosary Chapel), but the wooden walkway along The Shore was closed, likely due to erosion. So we adjusted our route and crossed the first bridge of the day: the Kampung Morten Bridge.

Bridge by Bridge

From the bridge, we walked due north along Jalan Kampung Morten until we reached Lorong Tun Mamat 1, where the second bridge — Jambatan Datuk Mohd Zin — awaited. We continued onto Jalan Tun Mamat, then Jalan Tun Ali, forming an upside down U shaped loop.

Next came the third bridge, the Old Bus Station Bridge, where we rejoined the river and continued our walk.

We passed the fourth bridge, Jambatan Hang Tuah, and continued southeast. Soon after, we reached the fifth bridge, Jambatan Pasar, and walked south along Jalan Baru until we arrived at Jalan Kampung Jawa.

The “Gates to Hell”

Here stood perhaps the most famous — or infamous — bridge of all: the sixth bridge, Jambatan Kampung Jawa, nicknamed the “Gates to Hell.” Local stories claim that people were beheaded here during the Japanese Occupation in the 1940s. Whether myth or memory, the bridge remains one of Melaka’s most talked about landmarks.

We continued south to the very end of the river walkway, passing the seventh bridge, the Bridge of Chan Koon Cheng, before walking past the Church of St. Francis Xavier. Before long, we reached The Stadthuys.

The Final Bridge

We ended our river walk — which could easily be called our bridge spotting walkabout — at the eighth and final bridge, the Tan Kim Seng Bridge.

MKZ Day 3 │ Walkabout: The Stadthuys and Beyond!

Back to Full Strength

The last time we were in Melaka, we were still recovering from a Covid 19 infection and weren’t at full strength. This time, we were almost back to peak health — and eager for another proper walkabout.

We planned to take a Grabcar to Mei Sin Café in the Bunga Raya area, but at 8am there were no drivers available. So we decided to walk the entire way from Mahkota Residence — a good 2 kilometres — at a relaxed morning pace.

The Long Walk to Breakfast

We left Mahkota Residence, crossed Jalan Syed Abdul Aziz, and headed north along Jalan Mahkota, passing Mahkota Parade. After crossing Jalan Merdeka, we turned left for a short stretch before turning right at Dataran Pahlawan, continuing north along Jalan Taman.

We reached Jalan Kota, turned left, and walked northwest past a row of museums until we met Jalan Merdeka again. From there, we turned right onto Jalan Laksamana, walking past The Stadthuys, the Melaka Clock Tower, and Christ Church.

We crossed Jalan Laksamana and continued northeast along a row of old heritage shop lots until we reached the Church of St. Francis Xavier. At the fork, we chose Jalan Bunga Raya, heading north.

A Street Full of Memories

Jalan Bunga Raya holds a special place in our hearts — it was where we spent most of our time back when the Ramada Plaza Hotel still existed. We continued north, passing Cat’s favourite Teck Ann Chinese Medicine shop, until we reached the intersection with Jalan Munshi Abdullah.

We crossed the road and walked a little further before finally arriving at our chosen breakfast spot: Mei Sin Café.

A Riverside Morning

After breakfast, we began our river walk — strolling the entire stretch from Kampung Morten all the way to Hard Rock Café. From there, we doubled back along Jalan Laksamana, then Jalan Merdeka, and finally Jalan Kota before reaching Dataran Pahlawan, where we ended our morning walk.

MKZ Day 2 │ LU YEH YEN Restaurant

A Slow, Easy Morning

We spent the entire morning at Pangsapuri Hilir Kota, enjoying a simple McDonald’s breakfast. True to his word, at noon Victor gave us the go ahead to move into our preferred unit at Mahkota Residence.

Once we settled in, Cat immediately busied herself with laundry, while I continued editing the clips from yesterday’s adventures.

A Simple Lunch and a Lazy Afternoon

Lunchtime arrived and we ordered a simple fried rice meal through GrabFood. After eating, I took an afternoon nap while Cat caught up on current affairs on her tablet.

An Empty Melaka City

I woke up in the evening, and we set out for a leisurely drive around Melaka City. The streets were surprisingly empty — most likely because our Muslim friends were preparing for the breaking of fast.

We reached Lu Yeh Yen a little after six and, without hesitation, ordered:

  • Dried Chilli Fried Chicken — RM12.00
  • Sweet & Sour Pork — RM12.00
  • Salted Vegetable Soup with Tofu — RM10.00
  • Large Omelette — RM6.00
  • Large pot of Rice — RM3.00
  • Two rounds of Coca Cola — RM3.00

To our delight, the entire meal was free of service charge, bringing the total to a very reasonable RM46.00 (≈ USD11/EUR10). We’ve been coming here every time we visit Melaka — and we’ll continue to do so.

Tomorrow’s Plan

Tomorrow, we plan to go on a riverside walk, so please stay tuned for the next chapter of our Melaka trip.

MKZ Day 1 │ Pangsapuri HILIR KOTA

A Last Minute Escape

Three months later and we found ourselves back in Melaka. This trip was so last minute that our ever reliable Airbnb Superhost, Victor, practically had to move heaven and earth to fit us into his schedule. We had hoped to stay at Mahkota Residence again, but it was fully booked until the next day.

A Quiet Stay at Pangsapuri Hilir Kota

Until then, Victor arranged for us to stay one night at an excellent 3 bedroom ground floor apartment at Pangsapuri Hilir Kota. Nestled among newer high rises, this older housing complex was surprisingly quiet and peaceful — a lovely contrast to the bustle of Melaka City.

True to form, Victor proved once again why he is a Superhost in more ways than one. The apartment was clean, comfortable, and thoughtfully prepared. If not for the absence of a washing machine, it would have been absolutely perfect.

Let the Videos Speak

We’ll let the videos describe the apartment in detail. If you’re planning a trip to Melaka, we highly recommend browsing Victor’s portfolio of apartments and homes on Airbnb. He has never once let us down.

MKZ Day 1 │ BABA CHARLIE Café

A Ramadhan Getaway

Two weeks into the holy month of Ramadhan, we decided to take a short break from the concrete jungle of Kuala Lumpur. Our favourite Airbnb Superhost, Victor, managed to secure a place for us, and after a leisurely two hour drive south, we arrived in Melaka City.

Since it was already lunchtime, we headed straight to Baba Charlie Café. From its humble beginnings in a narrow, inconspicuous lane making traditional Nyonya kuih, Baba Charlie has grown into a full café serving a wide range of Nyonya dishes.

Nyonya — descendants of Southern Chinese settlers in maritime Southeast Asia
Kuih — bite sized traditional snacks or desserts

Lunch at Baba Charlie Café

Hunger pangs meant we forgot to film the menu, but trust us — the selection was extensive. After a quick scan, we settled on:

  • Ponteh Chicken Rice Set — RM7.90
  • Chili Garam Fish Steak Rice — RM23.90
  • Assorted beverages

Pongteh — braised meat with potatoes in fermented bean paste and soy sauce
Chili Garam Fish — Nyonya style baked fish with chilli paste

The best part? No service charge. Our meal came to a very reasonable RM38.30 (≈ USD9/EUR8).

Kuih Shopping Spree

Of course, no visit to Baba Charlie is complete without kuih. We bought ten servings’ worth of our favourites for RM40.50 (≈ USD10/EUR9). Among them were:

  • Ang Koo — red tortoise kuih with mung bean filling
  • Kochi — glutinous rice flour with coconut and palm sugar
  • Kuih Lapis — colourful steamed layered pudding
  • Pulut Tekan — blue tinted glutinous rice with kaya
  • Seri Muka — glutinous rice topped with pandan custard
  • Talam — steamed coconut milk and rice flour kuih

Each piece was a reminder of why Melaka remains the heart of Nyonya heritage.

Highly Recommended

We highly recommend Baba Charlie Café to anyone wanting to experience authentic Nyonya cuisine and traditional sweet cakes. It’s a must visit whenever we’re in Melaka.

100th Video Special: To LAKE GARDENS and Back

It’s Our 100th Vlog on YouTube! 🎉

This one felt special.

To celebrate both our 100th vlog and the first anniversary of our channel, we wanted to do something different—something that showed a side of Kuala Lumpur that many might not know existed.

Most of our past walkabouts had taken place in malls and city streets—what we liked to call our urban jungle. But today, we were heading somewhere greener.

A Different Side of KL

We began our walk as we often did, along Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman (TAR), heading south before turning into a small alley toward Lorong Gombak, then continuing along Jalan Palestin.

From there, we reached Jalan Raja Laut, heading south and crossing Jalan Parlimen before arriving at Jalan Raja.

This stretch was filled with some of Kuala Lumpur’s most iconic landmarks:

  • Dataran Merdeka
  • Sultan Abdul Samad Building
  • The Zero Mile Marker
  • The Tallest Flagpole in Malaysia
  • Kuala Lumpur City Gallery

It was a reminder of how much history sat right in the heart of the city.

Into the Green Lung

We continued along Jalan Sultan Hishamuddin, then turned onto Jalan Cenderasari.

And just like that, we entered Kuala Lumpur’s green lung.

The change was immediate. The noise faded, replaced by trees, open space, and cool shade.

We walked past:

  • Tanglin Health Clinic
  • Kuala Lumpur Butterfly Park

Before arriving at Taman Etnobotani.

Lake Gardens

Crossing over to Jalan Tembusu, we soon reached the entrance to Lake Gardens, also known as the Perdana Botanical Garden.

Here, the city felt far away.

We followed tree lined paths, circled the lake, and crossed bridges leading to:

  • The Bamboo Playhouse
  • Quiet garden corners
  • The Oasis Garden Waterfall

The area was vast, peaceful, and incredibly refreshing.

The Final Stretch

We continued along Jalan Kebun Bunga, eventually passing:

  • Fantasy Planet & Dinosaur Park
  • The Royal Lake Club

From there, we made our way toward Jalan Parlimen, walked past Padang Merbok, and crossed through the underpass near Bulatan Dato Onn.

Soon enough, we were back in familiar territory along Jalan Raja Laut.

One Last Stop

No walkabout of ours ever ended without food.

We stopped by our favourite mamak spot, Sithique Nasi Kandar Pulau Pinang, along Jalan TAR to grab some Roti Canai with Mutton Curry to take home.

Just as we wrapped up, the rain came pouring down.

Camera safely tucked away, we ran all the way home.

A Walk Worth Remembering

  • Total distance: 7.31 kilometres
  • Total feeling: worth it

We were completely exhausted—but in the best way possible.

Looking Back

This walk reminded us why we started.

Not just to film malls or meals—but to explore, experience, and share the places we loved, especially those hidden in plain sight.

Kuala Lumpur wasn’t just a city of buildings—it had spaces to breathe, to slow down, and to reconnect.

And for our 100th vlog, we couldn’t have asked for a better way to show it.

Here’s to More

A hundred videos down.

Many more to come.

Thank you for being part of this journey. 🌿✨

Mall Hopping 3 │ NU Sentral and Beyond!

It’s the Weekend — Shoe Hunting!

If yesterday was all about t shirts, then today was all about shoes.

Cat had her eyes set on a pair of platform sneakers, and that was enough reason for us to head out. We started the day with a free GoKL bus ride that took us to KL Sentral.

Breakfast First

Before the hunt began, we stopped for breakfast at NU Sentral at a place called Nyonya Colours. It was a quick, simple meal—just enough to fuel us for the long search ahead.

From there, we made our way down to Muzium Negara MRT Station and caught a train to Bandar Utama.

First Stop: 1 Utama

About fifteen minutes later, we arrived at Bandar Utama MRT Station and walked straight into 1 Utama Shopping Centre.

Right at the entrance — Sports Direct.

We browsed around, and Cat found a couple of options from Puma and Skechers. But she held back, just in case something better came along later.

On the other hand… we weren’t as disciplined.

We walked away with four Lonsdale boxing vests—to be fair, they were on sale!

The Search Continues

We continued through the mall:

  • Skechers store — nothing quite right
  • Footlocker — a pink Converse caught Cat’s eye
  • Converse store (2nd floor) — small and unmanned
  • Puma store — no platform sneakers

After walking around for a while, Cat decided to go back to Sports Direct for the Puma pair she liked earlier.

Almost… But Not Quite

Back at the store, she tried them on. Too tight.

And worse—it was the last pair. That ended that.

We left slightly disappointed, already thinking that we might have to continue the search online instead.

Moving On to Mutiara Damansara

Not ready to call it a day, we hopped back on the MRT and travelled one stop to Mutiara Damansara.

But when we arrived at The Curve, we were stunned—it felt almost like a ghost town. We later learned that it had struggled to recover after the pandemic.

We didn’t stay long.

A Bit More Life at IPC

We crossed over to IPC Shopping Centre, which thankfully felt much livelier—helped, no doubt, by IKEA next door.

We explored:

  • A very large Skechers store — still nothing
  • Original Classics — no luck again

A bit discouraged, we took a break and wandered into:

  • LC Waikiki
  • Brands Outlet

This helped lift Cat’s mood a little.

Lunch and Heading Back

By then, it was lunchtime, and most places were packed. As we were heading back toward the MRT, we spotted OneDeLand, a Western Asian fusion restaurant that wasn’t busy.

Perfect.

We had a great lunch there, just what we needed before calling it a day.

Journey Home

We walked back to Mutiara Damansara MRT Station and took the train to KL Sentral—a smooth twenty minute ride.

From there, we considered taking the free GoKL bus, but the first one that arrived was packed. Not fans of crowded spaces, we decided not to wait and instead took a Grab ride home.

Calling It a Day

No shoes this time, but still:

  • A good walk
  • Some small shopping wins
  • A nice lunch
  • And another full day out together

Sometimes, it wasn’t about finding exactly what we were looking for—it was about everything that happened along the way.

Catch you in the next walkabout! 👟✨

Mall Hopping 3 │ ONEDELAND @ IPC Shopping Centre

A Surprise Lunch at OneDeLand

After three and a half hours of walking and browsing, we finally worked up a serious appetite. We were actually on our way back to the Mutiara Damansara MRT station to head home when something caught our eye.

A restaurant.

A Spontaneous Choice

Curious, we paused.

OneDeLand advertised itself as a fusion of Western and Asian cuisine, tailored to modern Malaysian tastes. It also wasn’t as crowded as the other eateries around, which made the decision easy—we stepped right in.

What We Ordered

After looking through the menu, we settled on something a little different:

  • Cat ordered the Grilled Chicken Chop with Bacon burger
  • I went with the Grilled Pork Chop with Bacon burger
  • Both came with a side of fries

For drinks, we decided to be adventurous:

  • Cat tried the Hawaiian Sunset (pineapple) juice
  • I went with the Vege Green (apple) garden juice

The Verdict

Our meal came to RM56.10 (≈ USD13 / EUR12)—a little on the pricey side for us, but not unexpected for a mall setting.

The good:
  • The burgers and fries were enjoyable, hearty and satisfying after a long day
The surprising:
  • The drinks had a strong celery aftertaste, which we both found a little unusual

Final Thoughts

Despite the quirky drinks, we had a pleasant meal overall. It wasn’t groundbreaking, but it was a solid, easy choice if you were looking for a quick bite in the area.

Sometimes, the best finds were the ones you didn’t plan at all.

Mall Hopping 3 │ NYONYA COLOURS @ NU Sentral

It’s the Weekend — Breakfast First

We were on a mall hopping mission again, and like all good days out, it began with food.

We caught the free GoKL Red Line bus from our home and headed toward KL Sentral. Before jumping onto the MRT to 1 Utama Shopping Centre, we decided it was best to fuel up first.

Hunting for Food

Our initial plan was to grab something at Quiziin Food Court on Level 3, but upon arrival, we quickly realised that most of the stalls were closed—likely because it was the first day of Ramadan.

With options limited, we walked back along the same floor in search of something else.

A Familiar Favourite

That was when we reached Nyonya Colours, a place we had come to rely on for a simple, satisfying meal.

We ordered their Set A, which came with:

  • Toasted bread
  • Half boiled eggs
  • Teh Tarik

It was a classic Malaysian breakfast, and one we kept coming back to time and time again.

A Good Start

The total came to RM19.60 (≈ USD5 / EUR4). For a meal in a mall, we thought that was quite reasonable.

It wasn’t fancy. It wasn’t elaborate. But it was exactly what we needed.

Ready to Go

With our bellies filled and spirits lifted, we felt energised and ready. Now, the real walkabout could begin. 🚶‍♂️✨

Mall Hopping 2 │ Sungei Wang Plaza and Beyond!

It’s the Weekend — Mission: T Shirt Hunt

Last weekend, we were at Sungei Wang Plaza, and among our purchases was a khaki Jack & Jones t-shirt from Factory Outlet Store (FOS). It turned out to be one of the most comfortable t-shirts we had ever worn.

Naturally, that sparked a mission.

This weekend, we set out to find more.

Starting at Sungei Wang

After a quick breakfast, we hailed a Grab and made our way back to Sungei Wang Plaza, heading straight to FOS.

No luck.

The t shirt we loved so much had been part of an old stock clearance. Once it was gone, it was gone.

On to Berjaya Times Square

Undeterred, we walked over to Berjaya Times Square to try our luck at the FOS outlet there.

Still nothing.

A Small Win at LC Waikiki

Since we were already there, Cat suggested we visit LC Waikiki, one of our favourite budget friendly stores.

This time, I got lucky.

I picked up two polo t shirts with chest pockets for just RM24.90 each (≈ USD6 / EUR5)—a pretty decent find.

First Time at LaLaport BBCC

Next stop: LaLaport Bukit Bintang City Centre.

Being our first visit, we made a rookie mistake—crossing a few busy roads to get there, not knowing there was a proper overhead pedestrian bridge. Lesson learned.

Once inside, we found the FOS outlet… but again, no khaki Jack & Jones t shirt.

At that point, we accepted that today just wasn’t going to be the day.

That said, I did walk away with a pair of cotton briefs—not quite the original goal, but still something.

Lunch and a Gentle Reset

After a quick break, we decided to grab lunch. With no strong cravings, we headed to the lower ground floor where a wide variety of food options awaited.

We eventually chose Sukiya Tokyo Bowls & Noodles, which felt fitting given LaLaport’s Japanese roots.

It was a good, savoury meal, and just what we needed to reset.

A Bit of Browsing

After lunch, we took our time walking around.

Cat wanted to check out Nitori, and we ended up spending quite a while browsing through the furniture and household items. A few pieces caught our attention, and we made a mental note to come back another time.

A Minor Mishap

Somewhere along the way, I managed to break the cap off my hand sanitiser.

So we made a quick stop at Healthlane Pharmacy to get a replacement bottle. Problem solved.

Heading Home

With nothing else planned, we made our way to Hang Tuah Station and caught the LRT back.

We got off at Bandaraya and stopped by Sogo, where Cat picked up her favourite Diane shampoo and conditioner.

Before heading off, we grabbed takeaway dinner from Bungkus Kaw Kaw at the lower ground floor.

A Day That Didn’t Go as Planned

We didn’t find the t shirts for which we were hunting.

But we still walked away with:

  • A couple of good clothing finds
  • A satisfying lunch
  • A slow afternoon exploring a new mall

Sometimes, the goal wasn’t achieved—but the day still turned out simply fine.

Until Next Time

With that, we wrapped up another weekend adventure.

Plenty more walkabouts ahead—stay tuned! 👕✨

Mall Hopping 2 │ SUKIYA @ LaLaport

Lunch at Sukiya, LaLaport BBCC

In the middle of our mall hopping mission, we decided it was time for an early lunch. We made our way down to the lower ground floor of LaLaport Bukit Bintang City Centre (BBCC) and settled on a familiar name—Sukiya Tokyo Bowls & Noodles, or simply Sukiya.

Sukiya described itself as a place that brought together “deep Tokyo culture and a fresh, modern energy”, and we were curious to finally experience it in person.

First Time Dining In

We had actually ordered Sukiya quite a few times through the GrabFood app whenever we were in the mood for Japanese food. But this was our first time dining in, and the setting gave us a slightly different perspective.

Located among a wide selection of eateries, Sukiya felt like a convenient and easy choice—especially with so many options around us still waiting to be explored another time.

What We Ordered

We scanned through the menu, but instead of overthinking it, we went straight for one of their lunch sets:

  • Cat chose the Chicken Katsu Don
  • I went for the Chicken Katsu Curry

Both sets came with:

  • A slice of watermelon
  • A soft drink each

The total bill came to RM32.50 (≈ USD8/EUR7).

Our Verdict

The meal was decent and satisfying, much like what you would expect from a casual fast food style restaurant. It filled us up and did the job, but it wasn’t something we would go out of our way to rave about.

One thing we did notice afterward—we both felt quite thirsty, which we suspected might be due to a generous use of seasoning or seasoning enhancers.

Final Thoughts

All in all, Sukiya was:

  • Convenient
  • Affordable
  • Reliable

If you were nearby and wanted a quick Japanese fix, it was a solid option. Just maybe have an extra drink ready on the side!

And with that, we were ready to continue our walkabout. 🍱

Weekend Wander │ WALDORF

A Quiet Saturday at Waldorf Tower

Bright and early this Saturday morning, we drove to Waldorf Tower to check on an apartment my sister had left in our care. It had been months since our last visit, so we were hoping everything was still in good shape.

A Small Fix Turns Into a Mini Errand

The apartment held up well overall, but we quickly discovered that the bathroom light bulb had blown. That gave us the perfect excuse to head down to Mr. DIY at the ground floor of Hartamas Shopping Centre.

We picked up:

  • A replacement bulb
  • A can of Dettol disinfectant spray

Naturally, we didn’t stop there. We walked to the other end of the mall to grab a few bottles of drinking water and some small household items.

A Familiar Lunch

From Hartamas, we made our way across to Plaza Damas and stopped for lunch at Warung Soho—a place we had featured before.

It was a simple, satisfying meal, and exactly what we needed before heading back up.

A Productive Afternoon

Back at the apartment, Cat got down to work with a quick round of cleaning, while I settled in for a few hours of video editing. It was one of those afternoons where everything felt productive and calm.

Sunset Time Lapse

As the sun began to dip, I set up the DJI Pocket 2 on the balcony to capture another time lapse sequence—this time recording half an hour before and after sunset.

This latest attempt is already featured in a separate video, so do check it out if you haven’t already!

Dinner Plans… Changed

With the time lapse underway, we headed out to look for dinner. Our plan was to eat at Restoran Bestari, but we soon realised it had closed down.

It was disappointing, but not entirely surprising given how many similar places had struggled in recent years.

A Reliable Alternative

Still craving Mamak fare, we walked over to Banana, which had taken over a nearby space and seemed to be doing well.

We ordered:

  • Fried Yellow Noodles
  • Fried Rice Vermicelli
  • Drinks

Dinner came to RM23.40 (≈ USD6/EUR5)—simple, filling, and exactly what we were looking for.

Ending with a Treat

After dinner, we popped into FamilyMart to satisfy a quick craving for snacks before heading back upstairs.

Back in the apartment, I continued working through the day’s footage while Cat relaxed after a full day.

Wrapping Up

It wasn’t a big day, but it felt right:

  • A little maintenance
  • A little shopping
  • A little comfort food
  • And a beautiful sunset captured on camera

And sometimes, that’s more than enough.

Weekend Wander │ BANANA Plaza Damas (Re-opened!)

A Quiet Evening Reset

I spent most of the afternoon working on our videos, while Cat kept herself busy tidying up the apartment. It was one of those slow, productive afternoons where everything just flowed at its own pace.

As dusk approached, I set up the DJI Pocket 2 on the balcony of my sister’s apartment at Waldorf Tower, ready to capture a time lapse of the sunset. With everything in place, we left the camera to do its thing and headed out in search of dinner.

A Familiar Loss

Our first instinct was to head to Restoran Bestari, our usual spot for Mamak (Malaysian Indian Muslim) food. But when we arrived, we were met with disappointment—it had closed down.

We had mentioned this in an earlier video, but seeing it for ourselves still felt a little sad. Another familiar place gone, a quiet reminder of how tough the past few years had been for small eateries.

Oh well… it was what it was.

Finding a New Favourite

With that, we moved on to the next available option and found ourselves at Banana, which had taken over the space once occupied by Mari Canai—another casualty of the times.

Thankfully, Banana seemed to be doing well. The place was lively, with a steady flow of customers.

A Simple, Satisfying Meal

We kept things straightforward:

  • I had Fried Yellow Noodles
  • Cat chose Fried Rice Vermicelli
  • A round of drinks for both of us

Dinner came to RM23.40 (≈ USD6/EUR5)—affordable, filling, and comforting.

Everyday Food, Done Right

It wasn’t fancy, and it didn’t need to be.

This was the kind of meal we always came back to:

  • Quick
  • Hearty
  • Honest

The kind of food that truly defined “everyday meals for the everyday person.”

Ending the Day

With dinner done, we headed back to the apartment, knowing the time lapse would be ready for us.

It had been a quiet, reflective evening—one that reminded us how things changed, but also how new places stepped in to keep the rhythm of the city going.

And sometimes, that was enough.

DJI Pocket 2: Timelapse Take 3

Time Lapse: Kuala Lumpur at Sunset

It had been quite a while since we last worked on a time lapse video, so we decided it was time to try again. Just like before, this would be a short and simple post—letting the visuals do most of the talking.

Third Time’s the Charm

This marked our third attempt at time lapse photography, but this time, we wanted to capture something different.

Instead of our usual angles, we focused on the Kuala Lumpur skyline from a new perspective, watching how it slowly changed as day turned into night.

The Setup

For this shoot, we used the DJI Pocket 2, setting it to capture:

  • One frame every 3 seconds
  • Over the course of one full hour

We timed it carefully to include:

  • 30 minutes before sunset
  • 30 minutes after sunset

A Little Experiment

We also decided to experiment with an ND32 filter—something we hadn’t tried before in our previous time lapse shoots.

We were curious to see how it would affect:

  • Light exposure
  • Motion blur
  • The overall mood of the footage

Watching the City Change

As always, time lapse had a way of revealing things we didn’t normally notice.

The slow fade of daylight, the gradual glow of city lights, and the shift from warm tones to cooler hues all came together in a way that felt almost magical.

Keep It Simple

This time, we kept things straightforward. No long explanations. No complicated setups.

Just a camera, a skyline, and time doing its thing.

Until Next Time

We’re still learning, still experimenting—but that’s part of the fun.

More time lapse attempts are definitely on the horizon.

Stay tuned! 🌇✨

Weekend Wander │ WARUNG SOHO Plaza Damas

A Simple Meal at Warung Soho

After running a few errands at Hartamas Shopping Centre, we decided to keep things simple and have an early lunch before heading back home. Our choice was easy—Warung Soho, a place we had always enjoyed.

Comfort Food Done Right

Warung Soho was known for its Nasi Soho, a straightforward yet deeply satisfying dish:

  • Rice
  • Turmeric fried chicken
  • Rich, flavourful gravy

It was simple food, but it was done well—and that was exactly why we kept coming back.

A Place That Endured

We were especially glad to see that Warung Soho had made it through the pandemic. Like many small eateries, it had relied heavily on takeaway orders during the toughest periods.

Seeing it still standing today felt like a small victory—not just for the business, but for the neighbourhood we had come to know.

A Meal for Everyone

With drinks included, our lunch came to just RM24 (≈ USD6/EUR5).

Affordable, comforting, and honest—it was the kind of meal that truly lived up to the idea of “everyday food for the everyday person.”

Final Thoughts

Warung Soho might be small, but it more than held its own.

If you were looking for:

  • Simple, satisfying food
  • Great value
  • A taste of Kelantanese flavours

…this was a place we would recommend without hesitation.

Sometimes, the best meals weren’t the fanciest—they were the ones that felt like home.

KCH Day 6 │ Flying ✈ from KUCHING

Leaving Kuching — The Journey Home ✈️

After six hectic days of running around, errands, and settling Brendan back into campus life, it was finally time for us to leave Kuching.

Farewell at UNIMAS

We checked out of our Airbnb and made one last drive to UNIMAS to drop Brendan off at his college. We spent a little time there, sharing a few quiet moments before saying our goodbye.

It was never easy, but there was also a sense of pride knowing he was continuing his journey.

Back to the Airport

About half an hour later, we arrived at Kuching International Airport. We returned our rental car to Awang Amirul, thanked him for the smooth arrangement, and made our way into the terminal.

We had booked our return flight on Malaysia Airlines, and after checking in our luggage, we prepared to board.

Flight Back to Kuala Lumpur

We boarded MH2529, which would take about an hour and a half.

  • Captain: Cpt Yap
  • Lead cabin crew: Syaiful

It was only our second flight since the pandemic, and admittedly, the nervousness hadn’t quite gone away. Thankfully, the plane had in flight entertainment, which helped distract us a little.

The flight departed at 2:00pm.

A Smooth Ride

As always, we preferred travelling by land—but once again, we were in safe hands.

Under the steady control of Capt. Yap, the flight was:

  • Smooth
  • Calm
  • Almost turbulence free

Both take off and landing were uneventful, which went a long way in helping us feel more at ease with flying again.

Touchdown and the Ride Home

We landed in KLIA at 3:22pm. After collecting our luggage, we headed down to Level 1 to purchase tickets for the ERL (KLIA Express).

The train ride to KL Sentral was smooth and comfortable, taking about half an hour. From there, we hopped into a Grab car for the final leg home.

The End of a Chapter

And just like that, our Kuching trip came to an end.

It had been:

  • Busy
  • Meaningful
  • At times emotional

But above all, it was a journey that mattered.

We left Brendan behind to continue his studies, while we carried home a mix of memories—food, places, and moments that stayed with us.

Looking Ahead

This may be the end of this Kuching series, but as always…

another adventure is never too far away.

Stay tuned—we’ll be back with more soon. ✨

KCH Day 5 │ Rumah Asap Dayak SAMARAHAN

Kuching Trip — A Smoky Farewell

⚠️ Note: This post contains references to pork dishes. Our Muslim friends may wish to skip this one.

Last Night in Kuching

All good journeys eventually came to an end.

On our last night in Kuching, we decided to close our culinary adventure the same way we began it—with a trip back to Rumah Asap, the beloved “Smoke House” known for its generous spread of grilled meats.

It felt fitting. A full circle.

Back for More

Without much hesitation, we ordered some of our favourites again.

At the heart of the meal was pansuh—a traditional dish cooked inside bamboo stalks, filled with water, herbs, and seasonings, then covered with tapioca leaves. It was rustic, fragrant, and uniquely Sarawakian.

Alongside it, we went for:

• Grilled ribs
• Pork belly (“three layered pork”—rind, fat, and meat)
• Cuts from the grilled pig’s head

It was a hearty, smoky spread—bold flavours that we had come to appreciate over the past few days.

One Last Feast

With drinks included, our dinner came to about RM72.50 (≈ USD17/EUR16).

Yes, it was slightly pricier than our first visit—but honestly, it was still worth it.

The food was satisfying, the atmosphere familiar, and the experience felt like a proper farewell to Kuching’s unique food culture.

Looking Ahead

As we sat there finishing our meal, it finally sank in—tomorrow, we would be leaving.

And Brendan would be staying behind, continuing his studies.

It was a quiet moment. One filled with mixed feelings—pride, a little sadness, and the understanding that this was part of his journey forward.

Closing the Chapter

Our last night in Kuching wasn’t extravagant.

Just:

• Good food
• Familiar surroundings
• And a sense of closure

And sometimes, that was all we needed.

Stay tuned—the journey continues. ✈️✨
