FULLY VACCINATED!

Happy MCO Kuala Lumpur!

All of Kuala Lumpur has been under a full movement control order (MCO) since 7th May. That means we have been spending a miserable 2 months imprisoned in our own home!

The missus and our son received their 1st dose of Oxford AstraZeneca Vaccine some time back (27th May to be exact), and will receive their 2nd dose after 9 weeks. This will happen on 29th July.

I on the other hand was not offered the Oxford AstraZeneca Vaccine together with them, and was quite worried for a while, fearing that I was overlooked. The fear was misplaced, as I was soon offered the Sinovac-CoronaVac Vaccine. I received my first dose on 13th June, and today completed the vaccination process. All's well that ends well I guess.

We hope that everyone has registered for the vaccination and pray that the MCO ends soon, so that we can upload more videos.

JOVIS Music

Happy MCO Kuala Lumpur!

All of Kuala Lumpur will be placed under a full movement control order (MCO) for the third time, effective tomorrow 7th May. We will probably stay home during the weekends for the next two weeks, so this is potentially our last video till the end of the MCO. Stay safe everyone!

We've been coming to Jovis Music for a few years now, more so after the 'situation' happened. Jack is a master luthier who takes guitar setup and intonation to a whole new level. The difference in the feel of a guitar before and after undergoing his magic touch is astounding, and we cannot recommend him enough. For those looking to revitalise their love affair with the guitar, bring your guitar to Jack!

Happy MCO Kuala Lumpur!

Well then... its official! All of Kuala Lumpur will be placed under a full movement control order (MCO) for the third time, effective tomorrow 7th May. That means dining in will be forbidden, and so we hopped in the car and drove to Setapak for lunch at our favourite noodle shop, while running an errand as well.

We will probably stay home during the weekends for the next two weeks, so this is potentially our last video till the end of the MCO. With the way the trend is going at the moment we are fearful that the lockdown will be extended beyond the two weeks.

Stay safe everyone!

MASJID INDIA to LEBOH AMPANG Walkabout

Its Sunday and we were looking to go on another walkabout, although not as far as last week's walk to Dataran Merdeka. There's talk of businesses and schools closing under a purported MCO3 for Kuala Lumpur and the surrounding Klang Valley area, and this would also mean no dine-ins as well.

We decided to walk to Lebuh Ampang for our banana leaf rice fix (more on that in our previous video) before the imminent lockdown. We realised from watching our previous video from last week's walk to Dataran Merdeka that the clips were a little too short and abrupt, so this time we made sure to give each clip ample run time for you to soak in the sights.

Restoran KADER (Banana Leaf Rice)

Restoran Kader is located in the heart of Lebuh Ampang, and we have been coming here for our fix of banana leaf rice for as long as we can remember. While very reasonably priced, Kader is on par with the likes of its other upmarket contemporaries, although in our (biased) opinion it leaves the rest for dead!

As mentioned in an older post, I’ve actually been coming here since the 1990s, and nothing much has changed. The aroma emanating through the shop has not changed one bit, and is every bit as appetising now as it was back then.

HARTAMAS Shopping Centre Walkabout

Happy Labour Day everyone!

Whilst on a walkabout around Plaza Damas, we decided to pay Hartamas Shopping Centre a visit as well. It’s good to see most businesses still beating the odds here, and we hope that the worst is over.

PLAZA DAMAS Walkabout

 Happy Labour Day everyone!

We drove bright and early to Puchong in order to acquire a third spare battery for our little Lumix. The additional battery will bring us added comfort especially when shooting for extended periods.

We then drove to Plaza Damas, an area close to our hearts, to give it the attention it deserves. My brother-in-law owns an unoccupied studio apartment in the vicinity, and it has been left in our care. We do come from time to time check up on the unit and give it a little tender loving care so as to not let it feel neglected.

A lot has changed here, ravaged by the pandemic and we hope that in time Plaza Damas will be able to pick itself up again.

MASJID INDIA to DATARAN MERDEKA Walkabout

It's been a very long while since we went on a right proper walkabout, more than a year to be precise. Before 'the situation' we used to average 5km a day walking to Lake Gardens and back, alas that is no longer the case.

Starting out from our home, we walked the entire length of the route to Dataran Merdeka and back. We did not realised how scenic the route was, and managed to capture most of the sights in and around the locations we walked past.

HAMRO Nepali Restaurant

Today we decided to step out of our comfort zone and try something relatively new. We've been watching quite a few travel blogs and wondered if there were Nepali cuisine to be had here in Kuala Lumpur. A quick search online and presto! We found a gaggle of Nepali restaurants in and around the Medan Pasar area.

Truth be told, we first tried the Mandala Restaurant next door, but they declined to be filmed, so their loss is Hamro's gain?

Located within a clothes shop (Unique Fashion Collection Sdn Bhd) Hamro Nepali Restaurant occupies a small corner on the right side. Big thanks to Dipendra and Rabitha for having us, and yes, we will definitely come again!

SUNGAI WANG Plaza Walkabout

We were in Sungei Wang Plaza to run a few errands, while our son had an appointment with a hair stylist. It's good to see the place bustling with activity despite the on-going 'situation'. We do what we can to stimulate the economy and support local businesses, but uppermost in our minds is to always stay safe. It's also good to know that everyone here observes all related SOPs, it helps make us feel safer and reassured.

AJ SENSE SALON is a hair salon that our family has been coming to for a long time, way back when it was still known as Hair Republic. The rates are very reasonable and the staff courteous and experienced.

Eye Smart Vision Enterprise is also another establishment that we have been coming to at least once a year to do our glasses. Young and energetic, Jimmy never fails to impress us with his charm and excellent customer service.

JOE WONG Bak Kut Teh

It is the first weekend in the holy Muslim month of Ramadan. We ventured out to see if we could grab a bite to eat, since most eateries are supposed to be closed till early evening. Joe Wong Bak Kut Teh has been our default 1Bak Kut Teh place for many years, and we highly recommend it.

1a Chinese soup that literally means "meat bone tea", and at its simplest, consists of meaty pork ribs simmered in a complex broth of herbs and spices (including star anise, cinnamon, cloves, dang gui, fennel seeds and garlic) for hours. Additional ingredients may include offal, varieties of mushroom, choy sum, and pieces of dried tofu or fried tofu puffs. Additional Chinese herbs may include yu zhu (玉竹, rhizome of Solomon's Seal) and ju zhi (buckthorn fruit), which give the soup a sweeter, slightly stronger flavour. Light and dark soy sauce are also added to the soup during cooking and garnished with chopped coriander or green onions and a sprinkling of fried shallots, and usually eaten with rice.

Midnight Rain... We Begin Again!

It has truly been an awfully long while since our last blog. In that time, we experienced the ebb and flow of the pandemic, and it has been one heck of a roller-coaster ride.

We were very envious of some who have managed to make travelling a full-time profession, and dream of doing the same one day. Vlogging is the new way to go, long replacing the traditional blog as the medium of communication between the traveller and his audience.

To be perfectly honest we are painfully camera shy and will probably start off our vlogging attempts minus our faces and voices while focusing on the food or destination. A caption underneath each clip will be our means of communicating with our audience.

We have several cameras (though not all are meant for vlogging), and in time hope to invest in more suitable equipment. In the meantime, we will make do with what we have.

So, what better way to start off our attempt at vlogging than to showcase what’s right in front of us:

(Do visit our YouTube Channel Have Perut Will Travel)

It was a warm and humid night, so the rain was a very pleasant surprise. First time shooting in Cinelike-D (LOG file) and first-time colour correcting. Loads more to learn, but at least it’s a start!

Sekinchan Trip, Day 2

We woke up late the next morning and checked out of The One Boutique Hotel at around 11am. We then headed to Ah Ma House to sample their signature charcoal grilled love letters.

it was another blazing hot day

but we braved the heat anyway

not unlike the swing at my mother's house

goodies in store

in working order?

looks newly refurbished

items from yesteryear

with retro styled furniture that's now back in fashion

the flat screen TV is an eye sore though

We then bade a fond farewell to Sekinchan and drove for about half an hour due south to the next small town of Tanjung Karang. Here we planned to have lunch at another seafood restaurant. Suang Le River Restaurant was chosen (again) solely for its stunning location beside Sungai Tengi and the views it accorded us.

the very deceptive front facade

we were very skeptical at first

then it dawned on us

first whiff of the salty air

my money shot

ahoy there!

Since this is a purely seafood restaurant, we made do with their signature Kung Pao styled fish, Lala (soft clams) in rice wine and some omelettes.

taking our order

another room with a view

unassuming seafood restaurant

as we waited for our dishes to arrive

keeping himself busy

Chinese tea, as always

kung pao styled deboned fish

Cat's favourite lala (soft clams?)

a potent combination

in case Brendan grows tired of seafood

digging in

Again the meal did not come to RM100, another pleasant surprise. The amazing view of Sungai Tengi, however, is priceless!

perched on Sungai Tengi

a quite captivating view

blue skies to soothe the soul

time to say goodbye

We bade farewell to Tanjung Karang and in less that 2 hours were back home, safe and sound. This is trip that will repeat itself in the future, this we are certain of.

Sekinchan Trip, Day 1

It has been a while since we last blogged, 3 months to be precise. What with the end of the EMCO imposed on our condo, and coping with the new normal, planning and making a trip anywhere was the furthest from our minds?

August is a special month for us since it is the month when Brendan was born as well as the month we got married. As is always the case, we usually plan for a trip in the month of August to celebrate these joyous occasions.

We have never been to Sekinchan and have always marvelled at its photos posted on the internet. Barely 2 hours drive away from KL we have always wanted to go but never had the chance. Things would be different this time around.

We left home at about 9.35 am and arrived in Sekinchan exactly 2 hours later. Bearing in mind Brendan has had allergic reactions to seafood in the past, we decided against a seafood restaurant for lunch. With that in mind we ended up at Restoran Hui Siang, a Bak Kut Teh restaurant.

first order of the day

a non-seafood restaurant, a rarity here

SOPs observed!

hard at work

putting the kettle on

your customary utensils

condiments of choice

we are Malaysians, after all

herbal goodness

worth another shot

with extra broth, to boot

time to dig in!

The meal cost us RM40, which is way cheaper than the going rate in KL. With lunch out of the way we then headed to Mango King, a place that we have often read about online.

popular in Sekinchan

you won't miss it

power outage at the time

these were not served at the time

freshly plucked white guava

RM25 per canister, but well worth it

home grown mangoes

take your pick

we got 2 kilograms worth

in hindsight we should have gotten more

not too busy

sweet potatoes as well

don't mind if we do

we got a canister of dried banana fritters

not his 'thing'

wonder that these are?

Mango King apparently had a power outage, and the heat was overbearing. Hoping to cool off, the birthday boy asked for refreshments and after a quick check online we headed to Mamawe Café.

in the heart of Sekinchan

seeking refuge from the heat

in the shade at last

all manner of refreshments

I was distracted...

waiting for his ABC

Brendan's comfort food

Cat's mango bingsu

while Brendan and I...

both had the air batu campur (ABC) i.e. ice shavings galore

time to put the phone away

and enjoy all that iced goodness

Again, with all the ice shavings ordered the total cost barely came to RM20. A definite perk of living in a small town.

With time to burn till we check into our hotel we headed to the beach coincidentally called Pantai Redang (or Redang Beach). Being a Terengganu lad the word Redang is more easily associated (in my mind anyway) with the island off the coast of Merang in Terengganu.

Redang beach

posing with their 3-ply masks

unlike its namesake in Terengganu

it was a very hot day

very very hot indeed

we were driven into the shade

and continued taking photos

out of the sun

the new normal of sightseeing

face masks and all

checking Mom's handiwork

The extreme heat eventually dissuaded us from spending more time at Pantai Redang, and in a few short minutes we were checking in to The One Boutique Hotel.

fairly new

in full compliance with SOPs

one of the tallest buildings in town

let's get into the shade

We booked two Superior King rooms with a balcony, and yes, that means birthday boy had a room all to himself.

clean and spacious

with its own balcony

adequately equipped

view from the balcony

the new overpass cutting across Sekinchan

along Jalan Balai Polis (and we don't wonder why)

the only other tall building in Sekinchan

The sun was blazing outside, and we took a long afternoon nap, eventually waking up in the evening. When in Sekinchan seafood was inevitable, so armed with antihistamines we made the short drive to Loong Hua Seafood Restaurant.

ample parking for its patrons

but come early or risk not being able to find parking space

along a very narrow lane

we came pretty early

the usual

room with a view

the view can be very distracting

he was having nothing of it

To be honest we chose this restaurant solely for its view of the canal and the surrounding fishing boats, so we were pleasantly surprised by how good the food here was!

a pill before, a pill after

dining on the water

authentic fishing boats

lifeline of the town

never ceases to amaze us

absolutely distracting views

waiting to dig in

Another pleasant surprise was the entire meal of sweet and sour pork (for Brendan), steamed fish, kung pao fried squid, salted vegetable soup and a large omelette cost us less than RM90.

salted vegetable soup

steamed fish

omelette

sweet and sour pork

kung pao squid

and all that for less than RM90?

Thus ends our first day in Sekinchan, as we cast our final glance at the setting sun over the canal.
