MKZ Day 2 │ Jonker Walk • Seri Sahabat!

Homecoming to Jonker Walk: A Melaka Evening Rediscovered

Jonker Walk has always been our unofficial “first stop” in Melaka — a familiar comfort, a ritual. But somehow, over the years, it slipped out of our routine. This trip felt like the right moment to reclaim it.

Fresh from a sumptuous Baba Ang lunch, we stepped out of The Apple Residence at half past six and began our slow wander through the city. The route wound through Jalan Haji Bachee, across Jalan Bendahara, and onto Jalan Bunga Raya Pantai, eventually leading us through Little India and onwards to Jalan Laksamana. By the time The Stadthuys came into view, the evening light had softened into that unmistakable Melaka glow.

Crossing the Tan Kim Seng Bridge, we paused to admire the proud Horse statue marking the entrance to Jonker Walk. But one look at the heaving crowd — a true sea of humanity — convinced us to take a gentler detour. Instead of diving into the bustle, we slipped into Lorong Hang Jebat, then Jalan Tukang Besi, and finally Jalan Tukang Emas, emerging near the Jonker Center Stage. A few photos later, we continued our quiet escape through Jalan Portugis and Jalan Masjid.

Soon enough, the Melaka River called us back — the same path we’d taken that morning, but transformed by dusk. The sky bruised purple, the river shimmered with the last traces of daylight, and from Jambatan Pasar we felt the city’s pulse: riverboats humming by, street-snack aromas drifting in, and the soft murmur of people easing into the night.

The riverside walkway unfolded like a lantern-lit corridor. Murals glowed against the walls, each one whispering a piece of Melaka’s layered history. Neon reflections danced on the water as boats passed, their guides’ stories floating faintly through the air.

By the time we reached the quieter Bunga Raya stretch, the crowds had thinned and the river had settled into a calmer rhythm. A quick stop at 99 Speedmart for drinking water, and we continued toward Seri Sahabat — a neighbourhood where Melaka feels lived-in rather than performed. Motorbikes buzzed past, neighbours chatted across doorways, and the night settled into a warm, familiar stillness.

Still full from lunch, we kept dinner simple:

  • Roti Canai Telur
  • Ambra Juice

All for a modest RM16 (≈ USD4/EUR3) — proof that comfort doesn’t need to be extravagant.

A quick ATM stop later, we made our way back to The Apple Residence, the river just behind us and the city easing into sleep.

Stay tuned — lunch tomorrow takes us to a quaint Malay stall!
