Its the school holidays. Cat and Brendan can't seem to stay home, today they found an interesting restaurant at Sungei Wang Plaza called T-Bowl (which I thinks stands for Toilet Bowl).

The menu is a pretty good indication of things to come

Cat and Brendan went to a Korean restaurant today (signage says Korea Restoran, oddly enough) located at Ampang Point.

This is the cafe that replaced Pak Li (now defunct) (along Jalan Dang Wangi).

Everything was fine and dandy

Until we got the bill!

The problem is, this (and its predessesor, Pak Li) kopitiam depends on lunchtime traffic from surrounding offices to survive. Its has little to no patrons at night, and is virtually empty during the weekends.

With a Mamak shop next door, Pak Li used to price itself accordingly and competitively.

The same could not be said about My Asia 1 Cafe. I had a mild heart palpitation when presented with the bill! 3 drinks , french fries and a set of roti bakar set us back by RM30+ at this new 1 Asia Cafe, so watch out!

*Footnote: As of February 2011, this kopitiam has gone in the way of its predessesor (Pak Li). It was not open for business since the end of January 2011. The premise has since been taken over by a travel agent.

A week later and my sisters and I hooked up again. This time we had lunch at a typical Mamak restaurant in Hartamas (can't remember the name).

The following day was spent shopping with my sisters. While they shopped, we found the time a light snack at Oldtown White Coffee at Pavillion.

Lunch (or high tea coz it was getting pretty late in the afternoon)  was at GrandMama's (?) in Pavillion.

Hari Raya 2010 @ KL, Day 2

On the 2nd day of Hari Raya, with nothing to do and nowhere to go, we headed out to Ikea in the morning.

While KL folks made the exodus back to their home towns, we noticed a high number of non-KL/Selangor plated cars (from as far as Perlis & Johore) around KL town. The lack of patience at check-out counters also told us the Penangites were in town as well :-(

Hari Raya 2010 @ KL, Day 1

It can be pretty quiet in Kuala Lumpur during the holiday season surrounding Hari Raya period. We elected to stay behind and not join the mad frenzy to "balik kampung" this year.

Growing up in Kuala Terengganu, we were spoilt for choice when it came to open houses, not so in Kuala Lumpur. The mass exodus of KL folks (of all races, mind you) means during the Hari Raya period means no one actually celebrates it here. You could run around naked on the streets of Kuala Lumpur and no one would bother you (except perhaps the boys in blue).

Fortunately, my old friend Fazleen elected to stay back too, and we had a place to visit.

I think we were kinda early?

No matter, we felt right at home:)

I don't usually make it a habit of featuring upscale eateries, but since we celebrated Brendan's birthday here it got a mention in passing. Truth be told, we feel a bit guilty for featuring this place in our blog.

Anyway, to celebrate Brendan's birthday we took him to the Wangsa Walk outlet in Wangsa Maju. His godfather (and my bro) Anderson was there to celebrate as well.

We come here quite often, more than once a month. It competes with Yu Kee Bak Kut Teh for our affections. Its interior brings back, to a certain extent, memories of growing up in my hometown.

If you're on the MRR2 heading to Batu Caves it’s at Taman Melati (in front of the orange coloured Platinum Victory Condominiums). You'll see a long row of shop houses sandwiched by Esso and Petronas. It’s on the far left end of the row of shop houses.

I hail from Kuala Terengganu and know for a fact that it should be spelt 'Ulek' and not 'Ulik' Mayang. Apart from this, I have absolutely no complaints about this shop as the nasi dagang is as close as you'll ever get to the genuine article. Also, it’s very competitively priced and meals will not blow a hole in your pocket (if you have a big family).

FYI, the best I've ever had is naturally a shop in Kuala Terengganu. If you're ever there, ask for directions to *Simpang Tok Ku. Once there, there's a shop right in front of the Shell petrol station. Last time I checked, the nasi dagang there was still RM1.50 per plate!

Update: The shop at *Simpang Tok Ku has changed operators. The two elderly sisters have relocated their business to Kuala Ibai. I'll be looking for them the next chance I get, and keep you posted.
