BEN Day 2 │ BENTONG Market Hunt: Reprise!

Bentong Market Hunt

We awoke at 6:45am and headed out for breakfast at 7:10am. Brendan opted to sleep in, so it was just the two of us on this humid and muggy Sunday morning.

We initially planned to eat at Choy Kee, but the lack of variety nudged us toward Bentong’s Kopitiam instead. There, we had a Yong Tau Foo–inspired breakfast, and together with drinks, it came to RM21.40 (≈ USD/EUR4).

Exploring the Morning Market

After breakfast, we wanted to replenish our Federal Reserves at a nearby bank, but the long queue deterred us. So we began our stroll through the Bentong morning market, starting with the textile section before doubling back into the main market hall.

Cat picked up a bunch of bananas for RM5.90 (≈ USD/EUR1). We then came across a Malay stall selling local delicacies and bought:

  • 10 Pulut Panggung
  • 10 cuts of Lemang
  • RM1.00 each
  • Total: RM20.00 (≈ USD/EUR4)

Cat later bought two papayas for RM15.60 (≈ USD/EUR3) — though the seller returned our change short by RM1.00, which was disappointing.

Final Errands

Our last stop was Mr Bentong Hafiz Oon, where Cat bought:

  • 500g fresh ginger — RM17.00 (≈ USD4/EUR3)
  • 1 carton Bentong Macao Eggs — RM19.00 (≈ USD/EUR3)

With our market haul complete, we headed back to the hotel to pack up and checked out at 10:00am.

BEN Day 1 │ BENTONG Night Stroll

Bentong Night Stroll

We awoke from our long afternoon siesta at 6:00pm and left the hotel half an hour later. After dinner at our perennial favourite, Aik Kee Restaurant, we set out for a leisurely night stroll.

(If you haven’t watched it yet, be sure to catch our previous video on our sumptuous dinner at Aik Kee.)

Exploring Bentong Walk

We made our way to Bentong Walk for some night time sightseeing. Realising we had forgotten to pack deodorant, a quick stop at KK Mart solved that problem.

We continued our stroll and soon came across a lively group of youthful K Pop enthusiasts dancing to their favourite tunes — a burst of energy right in the middle of the street.

A Coffee Break

We doubled back and stepped into The Hall Coffee along Jalan Chui Yin to quench our thirst. Brendan, meanwhile, returned to Bentong Walk to continue watching the K Pop street dance.

After our drinks, we regrouped and walked back to the hotel to begin work on the day’s footage.

What’s Next

Stay tuned — tomorrow we head out on an early morning market hunt!

BEN Day 1 │ AIK KEE Bentong: A Revisit!

Aik Kee Bentong

We awoke from our long afternoon siesta at 6:00pm and left the hotel half an hour later in search of dinner.

We had planned to try Loong Foong Restaurant for a change, but it was fully booked for a temple event. With that option off the table, we turned to our default Bentong favourite — Aik Kee Restaurant.

They had updated their menu since our last visit, so we took our time browsing before settling on:

  • Squid in Yam Basket
  • Dried Chilli Pork
  • Salted Vegetable Soup
  • Plain Omelette
  • 3 White Rice
  • Deep Fried Tilapia
  • 1 Soft Drink

Our dinner came to RM139.90 (≈ USD29/EUR27). Aik Kee never disappoints, and we enjoyed our reasonably priced meal with glee.

Bentong Walk at Night

After dinner, we took a leisurely stroll along Bentong Walk for some night time sightseeing.

Stay tuned for our upcoming video on this pleasant stroll — complete with K Pop dance performances and a cosy coffee hall.

BEN Day 1 │ BENTONG in 24 Hours

Bentong in 24 Hours

It had been a while since we last posted a video. In that time, I turned 55, which meant I was finally entitled to the nest egg safeguarded in the Employees’ Provident Fund (EPF). We settled a few outstanding financial matters — leaving us debt free — and kept the rest in EPF.

As a birthday present to myself, and to celebrate “semi retirement,” I splurged a little on a second hand Mercedes Benz B180. Christened BiBi (for Baby Benz), she became the newest addition to the family. A mini SUV, BiBi suited us perfectly as a family of three. Paying for her in cash meant we remained debt free.

Breakfast in Bentong

This fine Saturday morning, BiBi took us from our condo to Bentong, an hour’s drive away. We left at 8:10am, and precisely sixty minutes later arrived at Yat Heng Kopitiam along Jalan Dato Poo Yew Choy. A little off the beaten path, this diminutive coffee shop had a few stalls offering breakfast dishes.

After a while, we ordered:

  • Loh Shi Fun for Cat
  • Kueh Teow Thng for Brendan
  • Roti Canai Wrap for me
  • Hot Salted Coffee
  • 2 Iced Salted Tea

Our first meal in Bentong came to RM41.00 (≈ USD9/EUR8). Fair enough — though we didn’t appreciate the shop’s signature salted beverages and will avoid them in future.

Visiting My Parents

We then drove a short distance to Taman Bentong Makmur to visit my parents. There was plenty of catching up to do, and by the time we emerged, it was already lunchtime.

At their recommendation, we headed to KaiFan Mixed Rice along Jalan Tan Sri San Siang Sun. We browsed the plentiful dishes and settled on our mixed rice platters, which came to RM28.50 (≈ USD/EUR6).

Checking In

After lunch, we made a very short drive to Hotel Kristal and checked into our rooms. We booked two double rooms for RM323.28 (≈ USD68/EUR63) a night.

The rooms were spacious and well appointed — do check out our older video on this excellent hotel.

We took a nap and awoke from our long afternoon siesta at 6:00pm, leaving the hotel half an hour later in search of dinner.

Dinner & Bentong Walk

We eventually ended up at our perennial favourite, Aik Kee Restaurant. Be sure to catch our upcoming video on Aik Kee.

After dinner, we took a stroll along Bentong Walk for some night time sightseeing — stay tuned for our upcoming video featuring K Pop dance performances and a charming coffee hall.

The Next Morning

We woke at 6:30am and eventually had breakfast at Bentong’s Kopitiam before embarking on a market hunt. Upcoming videos will cover these events.

We returned to the hotel to pack up and checked out at 10:00am.

More Bentong stories coming soon — this was just the start of our 24 hour escape!

Selamat Hari Raya! 5-Mall Hop: Splendour of Eid Fitr

Selamat Hari Raya

I took leave today for a scheduled medical check up that was unfortunately cancelled. With nothing planned, we decided to revisit the same malls we explored during Chinese New Year — except this time, instead of chasing dragons, we were on the hunt for ketupat and Eid Fitr decorations.

We left our condo at 10:30am and ran a quick errand downstairs at Plaza City One. Then we walked to the bus stop along Jalan Munshi Abdullah and caught a free GOKL Blue Line bus to the Titiwangsa bus hub.

From there, we crossed the awfully busy Jalan Tun Razak via a footbridge and entered the Titiwangsa Monorail station, tapped in, and continued on until we reached the Titiwangsa MRT station.

Mall 1: TRX

We caught a train for RM2.00 (≈ USD/EUR0.40) to the Tun Razak Exchange (TRX) station — our first mall of the day. We captured the splendour of the Eid Fitr decorations here before moving on.

Mall 2: Pavilion Kuala Lumpur

Next, we boarded another train bound for Kwasa Damansara for RM1.20 (≈ USD/EUR0.30) and got off at Bukit Bintang MRT. Unfortunately, we exited the wrong turnstile, so for a “fare” of RM0.80 (≈ USD/EUR0.20) we re entered to head in the correct direction.

We exited through Gate E and walked to Pavilion Kuala Lumpur, where we captured footage of both the exterior and interior decorations — from ground level and from the sixth floor.

Mall 3: Sungei Wang Plaza

We continued along Jalan Bukit Bintang, ducked underground into the MRT station again, and exited at the other end for another RM0.80 (≈ USD/EUR0.20). Back on the surface, we took the escalator up past the Monorail station and entered Sungei Wang Plaza.

Working with limited space, the Eid Fitr decorations here were understandably modest.

Mall 4: Plaza Low Yat

We exited Sungei Wang and walked to Plaza Low Yat. Since it was lunchtime, we headed to the newly opened non halal food court, Asia Food City, on the lower ground floor. Our unplanned lunch came to RM49.50 (≈ USD/EUR10).

After lunch, we went up to the first floor to run another errand before crossing Jalan Imbi via a footbridge into Berjaya Times Square.

Mall 5: Berjaya Times Square

We shot some footage of the Eid Fitr decorations here before heading out onto Jalan Imbi again, walking toward our final destination of the day.

Mall 6: LaLaport BBCC

We arrived at our new favourite mall, LaLaport Bukit Bintang City Centre (LaLaport BBCC). We spent some time filming the Eid Fitr decorations, then rested our feet at Starbucks, where our drinks came to RM27.25 (≈ USD/EUR4).

Finally, we hailed a Grab car for RM13.00 (≈ USD/EUR3) back to our condo.

What’s Next

In our next video, we (hopefully) wake up early enough to enjoy a quiet morning of car free Sunday.

Note: Car free Sundays were not held during Ramadan.
