Xmas 2011 In KT Day 2

It’s Christmas! Woke up bright and earlier and headed to the hotel’s cafĂ© for breakfast.

the usual usual
We then headed to:

Chinatown Waterfront
Coordinates: 5.331250, 103.132292

It was our first time here since the completion of the Kampung Cina land reclamation project. The Pulau Warisan was a sight to behold!

ok, that's it

As a local boy, Kampung Cina has both changed (one way traffic going the opposite direction!) and not changed as well. I know it sounds strange because while things may have changed on the outside, despite all this progress I'm glad my ancestral home has not lost its ‘soul’.

We then paid a visit to our former family home:

(which used to bear the address)
No. 18 Kampung Padang
20300 Kuala Terengganu
Coordinates: 5.329466, 103.136279

which has since been levelled and turned into a parking lot by Hotel K.T. Mutiara. It was a sombre and nostalgic experience.

Lunch was at our favourite chicken rice shop:

Restoran Chuan Kee
Jalan Kota Lama
20300 Kuala Terengganu
Coordinates: 5.329306, 103.134583

Nothing has changed at all, and the proprietor (and family) still remembers us.

Xmas 2011 in KT Day 1

I am a Terengganu boy through and through, so spending Christmas in Kuala Terengganu was a no-brainer (I get a lot of ‘what’s there in Kuala Terengganu for Christmas’?). Well, apart from spending our vacation in familiar surroundings (I was transferred to Kuala Lumpur in September 2002) we absolutely missed the food.

At the same time, there were some personal upheavals going on (which I will not dwell on) so being in Kuala Terengganu for Christmas soothed my soul.

waiting to check in
We checked into:

Primula Beach Hotel

Jalan Persinggahan
20400 Kuala Terengganu
Coordinates: 5.329931, 103.150694

which till today is still one of the better hotels in town. We then headed out to our favourite local cake stalls located at:

Gerai Kuih Gong Kapas

Jalan Panji Alam
21100 Kuala Terengganu
Coordinates: 5.314374, 103.144268

You will not believe the bevy of cakes on sale, pictures do paint a thousand words!

we miss this stall so, so much J

kueh I grew up on

distinctly Terengganu

happy smiling people J

check this out!

nowhere in KL will you find this

Armed with our favourite cakes, we then spent the afternoon by the pool (and nearby beach), enjoy the photos.

kueh!

pool!

growing up Brendan spent a lot of time at swimming pools

while Cat couldn't be bothered about the pool

when it looks like he's had enough..

.. he goes at it again!

scenery I love J

scenery I love J

restricted to the beach..

the surf was unsafe for swimming

even the sand is different..

wished I had better lenses..

.. to capture these scenes

We had dinner at:

Ninja Joe

Ninja Joe
The Gardens, Lot LG-233
Lower Ground Floor The Gardens Mall
Lingkaran Syed Putra, Mid Valley City
59200 Kuala Lumpur
+0322832664

It’s the school holidays and someone’s off gallivanting.

a refreshing change

Cat and Brendan stumbled upon this place while on their walkabout, and they were suitably surprised. Brendan loves the tagline: if you can’t handle it, you’re chicken!

its Bruce Lee themed, apparently

It is somewhat of a novelty for a food establishment to be brazenly non-kosher, so kudos to the owners. The fries were mega sized, and the big boss burgers really meant business.

big boss (the burger, I mean J)

Brendan can't get over the size of the fries

so can't Cat

Korea Gomonae

Korea Gomonae
F 32 Ampang Point
Jalan Mamanda 3, Taman Dato Ahmad Razali
68000 Ampang

Cat and Brendan have been coming here a fair bit but it’s my first time. Caught up in the Korean wave, I decided to give this place a try.

We sell kimchi (but its not cheap!)

waiting to be served

Its basically a hole in the wall type establishment located within Ampang Point, with accompanying standard plastic chairs and tables.

the utensils were a novelty

red red kimchi soup

can't remember what I had

time to dig in

If this were an introduction to Korean cuisine, I was disappointed. However, a glance at the kitchen explained everything, as the cook is Indonesian!

I could be wrong?
