TGG Day 1 │ Recap

The Long Drive East

We woke up at 6am and left our condominium by 7am. After a quick pitstop at the Temerloh R&R around 8:30am, we continued our drive, which was largely uneventful.

We reached Kuala Terengganu at about 12:30pm and headed straight to our first port of call — Restoran Chuan Kee, our all time favourite Hainanese Chicken Rice restaurant. We’ve written about it before, and it remains a must visit every time we return.

A Visit With Purpose

With lunch out of the way and time to spare before hotel check in, we drove to my late Aunty’s house. The true purpose of this trip was to visit her home, which had been left abandoned since her passing in July last year.

The house was in a sad state of neglect. To make matters worse, an inconsiderate neighbour had parked her car directly in front of the gate, partially blocking access — and she had left it there while she went on holiday.

We managed to find out who she was and left word with a relative. The relative contacted her, and she promised to move her car the following evening. We told ourselves we would return as soon as the car was gone so we could finally begin sprucing up the house.

Checking In

We then checked into ARENA Boutique Hotel, the beautifully refurbished hotel we covered in an earlier blog. After a short nap, we headed out at 6:30pm in search of dinner.

A Maddening Search for Food

Unfortunately, our first, second, and even third choice eateries were closed — either for the day or permanently, we couldn’t tell. After driving all over town, we eventually ended up near Sultan Mahmud Airport, where we stumbled upon Ridwan Café & Seafood.

We had a sumptuous dinner at a ridiculously low price, which we’ve blogged about separately, and then headed back to the hotel hoping for an early night.

Tomorrow’s Plan

Tomorrow, we plan to go on an early morning walkabout, so please stay tuned for the next chapter of our Kuala Terengganu trip.
