CGK Day 6 │ JAKARTA Night Stroll • Bright Lights, Big City!

Jakarta at Night

We picked you up again right after Indra was done with his masterpiece.

At 6:30pm, we left the Airbnb determined to finally have dinner at Rumah Makan Padang Sederhana. This time, they were open — so we ordered:

• Beef Rendang
• Chicken Gulai
• Hard Boiled Egg Gulai
• Sayur Singkong
• Dendeng Balado
• 2 white rice

Total: IDR163,900 (≈ MYR45/USD10/EUR10).

In hindsight, this was half of what we paid at Sari Ratu in Sarinah Mall the day before, for more or less the same dishes.

Friday Night Lights

After dinner, we began our night stroll to experience Jakarta after dark. We headed east along Jalan M. Mashabi, passing both the West and East Malls of Grand Indonesia. The city was glowing — neon signs, headlights, reflections on glass towers.

We eventually reached the Bundaran HI roundabout, then continued north along Jalan M.H. Thamrin, walking past the MRT station. I took photos of the landmarks and bright lights all along the way.

At the Japanese Embassy, we doubled back and retraced our steps — this time on the opposite side of the street — along Jalan M. Mashabi, then continued onto Jalan H.M. Saleh Ishak.

We turned left onto Jalan Teluk Betung Boulevard, walked past Thamrin City, then turned right and made our way back to the Airbnb.

A Gentle Goodbye

Clichéd as it sounds, time really does fly when you’re having fun. Jakarta at night felt alive, warm, and strangely comforting — a perfect way to end our final evening in the city.

Stay tuned as we catch a taxi and then a couple of trains to Soekarno–Hatta Terminal 3.

CGK Day 6 │ INDRA @ Rollover Tattoo • Garuda vs. Jasmine!

Indra Rollover

We picked you up again after returning from our participation in Jakarta’s Car Free Sunday. I quickly got ready — we were expecting a guest at the Airbnb.

Knowing we would be in Jakarta during Imlek, I had reached out to several tattoo artists beforehand. Of all the artists I contacted, Indra’s artwork stood out the most. I was tired of monotone designs and wanted something fresh, colourful, and symbolic of Indonesia.

So I negotiated a price with him, transferred a deposit, and he began working on the design I had requested — a simple Garuda.

The Garuda, a bird like deity and Indonesia’s national emblem, felt like the perfect symbol for this trip.

When Indra shared the final design, I was blown away. I couldn’t wait for him to ink it on my left arm.

Indra was between studio spaces, so for now he made house calls, which suited us perfectly. What better way to get tattooed than in the comfort of your own space?

We set an appointment for 1:00pm, but Jakarta’s gnarly traffic delayed him by an hour. He arrived close to 2:00pm, studied my arm, and determined the ideal size and placement.

He began tattooing at 2:30pm and finished two hours later. To be honest, this tattoo hurt more than the rest — perhaps the skin on the lower arm is thinner — but the result was worth every sting.

I paid Indra his dues, added a little extra, and escorted him to the lobby. We said our goodbyes with a promise to visit his new studio once it opens.

We were so captivated by the new tattoo that we completely forgot we hadn’t had lunch.

Fast Forward a Few Days

We picked you up again after our shopping spree at Thamrin City and lunch at Warung Leko. We returned to the Airbnb at 2:00pm, took a quick shower, and waited for Pak Indra to arrive.

Ever since the Garuda, I knew I wanted one more tattoo before flying back to Kuala Lumpur. I’d always wanted a flower on my arm — and even Cat, who was never into tattoos and never commented on my past ones, was impressed by Indra’s detail and artistry.

While wandering the streets of Bandung, I began thinking of a design for my lower arm and finally settled on my favourite flower: the jasmine.

I contacted Indra again with a suggested design. What he sent back absolutely blew my mind. This time, I was chomping at the bit for him to start.

We set an appointment for 3:00pm. Indra arrived a little later, and after discussing the size of the beautifully detailed jasmine, he began work.

Three hours later, the masterpiece was complete.

I paid him — again with a little extra — and escorted him to the lobby.

CGK Day 6 │ JAKARTA Shopping • Thamrin City!

Frolicking Friday

I went to sleep before ten, while Cat turned in an hour later. Needless to say, we woke up refreshed and ready for what lay ahead: Thamrin City — the grand finale of our Jakarta shopping adventure.

I was up at 6:00am and managed to render the first video in our Indonesia series. Cat woke up soon after and busied herself with laundry. By 9:00am, we were out the door.

Breakfast at Thamrin City

A short walk brought us to Thamrin City, where most stalls were only just opening. Perfect timing for breakfast.

We chose Lawson Coffee, where an Iced French Hazelnut Coffee, an Iced Bubble Gum drink, and two Bak Paos came to IDR34,000 (approximately MYR9/USD 2/EUR2).

At 10:10am, we walked back in to begin browsing properly.

Batik Shopping Begins

Our first purchase was from Dewi Ndaru:

• Cat’s blouse and cardigan — IDR300,000 (approximately MYR82/USD19/EUR18).

From Rinjanie, we picked up a matching pair of Awan Sahaja (sky blue) batik tops — a blouse for Cat and a short sleeved shirt for me — IDR870,000 (approximately MYR238/USD54/EUR51).

Then at Cat’s favourite stall, Me Batik Collection, she got three blouses for IDR500,000 (approximately MYR137/USD31/EUR30).

A strong start to the day.

A Much Needed Massage

After more browsing, I felt cramps developing in my left leg. We asked around and were directed to Moras Reflexy & Massage on Level 2 of Block C.

We both opted for the one hour foot & shoulder massage — IDR70,000 (approximately MYR19/USD4/EUR4) each — and it was fantastic. The masseuse worked the cramps out completely. By the time we were done, it was noon.

Lunch at Warung Leko

We were hungry, so we tried Rumah Makan Padang Sederhana, but it was closed for Friday prayers. So we defaulted to our favourite: Warung Leko at Grand Indonesia.

We ordered:

• Sop Buntut (oxtail soup)
• Sup Asem Asem Iga (beef soup with beans)
• Jamur Enoki Krispy
• 2 white rice
• 2 Jus Kedondong

Total: IDR354,100 (approximately MYR82/USD21/EUR18).

Gelato & Round Two at Thamrin City

After lunch, we went down to Oma Elly Gelateria for a large and a regular cup of gelato — IDR154,000 (approximately MYR42/USD10/EUR9).

Then we walked back to Thamrin City and returned to Rinjanie to get a second matching pair of batik tops — this time in Terracotta (light orange) — again IDR870,000 (approximately MYR238/USD54/EUR51).

Before leaving, we stopped by Kopi Kenangan outside for two hot Kopi Kenangan Mantan — IDR36,000 (approximately MYR10/USD2/ EUR2).

A Special Guest

We walked back to the Airbnb to receive a very special guest at 3:00pm.

CGK Day 5 │ JAKARTA Jaunt Pt3 • Grand Indonesia

More Shopping

We picked you up again as we left Sarinah Mall and began our walk to Grand Indonesia, passing through Plaza Indonesia before entering the West Mall. We headed straight down to Uniqlo on the lower ground floor to look for my favourite shorts — this time in khaki green.

We found them for IDR399,000 (approximately MYR108/USD25/EUR24), then rode the elevator up to Level 3A, where I picked up a bone conduction Bluetooth earphone from Best Denki for IDR156,900 (approximately MYR42/USD10/EUR9) — a cheap replacement since I had left my regular earphones behind.

Despite checking multiple camera stores, our main errand remained unsolved: a messenger bag for our cameras. Yesterday’s brush with pickpockets taught us a valuable lesson — keep your equipment in front, never at the back. For now, we just have to stay extra alert in crowded places.

Dessert at Chateraise

We took a break at Cat’s favourite French sounding Japanese cake house, Chateraise, and enjoyed:

We rested our feet until 3:45pm, then walked across to the West Mall because Cat wanted to check out Alun Alun Indonesia on the third floor. She found a blouse she liked — but despite there being more staff than customers, no one wanted to serve us. The few who were working only attended to selected customers. Shame on them.

Perfume Haul at HMNS

We didn’t dwell on it. Instead, we went down to the first floor to the HMNS perfume stall and picked up:

• Iced jumbo Matcha Latte

Before heading back to the Airbnb, we stopped by the Bakmi restaurant to take away:

Back at the Airbnb, we finally put our feet up.

CGK Day 5 │ JAKARTA Jaunt Pt2 • Sarinah Mall

Padang Lunch

We picked you up again as we arrived at Sarinah Mall at 12:20pm, after a fixed fare Bluebird ride costing IDR77,000 (≈ MYR21/USD5/EUR5). Hungry and ready for something hearty, we walked straight into Sari Ratu Kitchen for a traditional Padang lunch.

We ordered:

• Urap (steamed vegetables)
• Sambal Eggplant
• Beef Rendang
• Ayam Gulai (chicken curry)
• Sop Buntut (oxtail soup)
• 2 plates of white rice
• 2 sugar free iced teas

Fragrance Haul

After lunch, we headed up one floor to revisit our favourite fragrance stall — Carl & Claire. We ended up buying six 30ml bottles of various scents for IDR1,674,000. Since we presented our passports, we received a 5% tourist discount, bringing the total down to IDR1,590,300 (≈ MYR430/USD98/EUR94).

Bucket Hats at Kamalika

Before leaving Sarinah, we stopped by Kamalika Artprints and picked up three bucket hats — one each — for IDR360,000 (≈ MYR97/USD22/EUR21).

CGK Day 5 │ JAKARTA Jaunt Pt1 • Plaza Blok M

Terrific Thursday

We went to sleep at midnight, but I was already awake by 5:00am. The ordeal with the pickpocket gang at Kota Tua kept replaying in my mind, so I got up and continued editing our video.

Cat woke up a little later. By 7:00am, we had taken turns in the shower, and an hour after that, we were out the door.

Breakfast at Plaza Indonesia

We walked past Thamrin City along Jalan Teluk Betung Boulevard, turned right toward Grand Indonesia, continued along Jalan H.M. Saleh Ishak, then crossed over into Plaza Indonesia.

We headed straight into Starbucks and ordered:

• Spicy Tuna Toastie
• Double Iced Shaken Caramel Coffee
• Strawberry Açaí with Lemonade

Our first breakfast back in Jakarta came to IDR142,200 (≈ MYR38/USD9/EUR8).

On a personal note, this was the last time we ever set foot in Plaza Indonesia. Why? Walking into Plaza Indonesia feels less like entering a mall and more like reporting for interrogation. Before you even see a shop, you’re scanned, searched, and ordered around like you’ve already done something wrong. Sure, security matters—but the cold, rude, zero-respect way it’s handled makes you feel small, not safe. Funny how a place selling “luxury” starts by treating normal people like suspects instead of customers.

MRT to Blok M

We exited Plaza Indonesia and walked down to Bundaran HI MRT Station. At 9:26am, we caught a train south to Stasiun MRT Blok M for IDR8,000 (≈ MYR2/USD0.50/EUR0.50). Seven stops, fifteen minutes.

Plaza Blok M wasn’t open yet, so we waited on a bench until the shutters rolled up.

We browsed every floor, right up to the top. We asked several salons about eyelash services, but either the artist wasn’t in yet or it was strictly by appointment.

T Shirt Mission for Brendan

We rode the elevator back down and found a stall selling 3 T shirts for IDR170,000 (≈ MYR46/USD10/EUR10). Then we stopped by Hammer and got 2 more T shirts for IDR229,900 (≈ MYR62/USD14/EUR14).

Five T shirts for Brendan — mission half accomplished.

But we still hadn’t achieved what we came for, so at 11:10am, we hailed a fixed fare Bluebird taxi for IDR46,000 (≈ MYR12/USD3/EUR3) to Bellezza Shopping Arcade.

The Wild Goose Chase

We arrived fifteen minutes later and went searching for Kee Indonesia, a local camera bag retailer. Ten minutes in, we realised we were on a wild goose chase — I had misunderstood their Instagram location.

We abandoned the search and hailed another fixed fare Bluebird taxi for IDR77,000 (≈ MYR21/USD5/EUR5) to Sarinah Mall.

CGK Day 4 │ IMLEK @ Jakarta • Glodok • Kota Tua

Chinese New Year in Old Jakarta

We picked you up again after checking back into Sigit’s lovely unit at Thamrin Executive Residence. After a quick shower — still dressed in our Imlek outfits — we headed out at 4:00pm, hailing a fixed fare Bluebird taxi for IDR81,000 (approximately MYR19/USD5/EUR4) to Gapura Chinatown in Glodok.

The drive took about an hour, giving us a very different view of Jakarta — less polished, less shiny, but endlessly fascinating. A few characters approached the taxi window now and then; I was tempted to film, but thought better of it.

We were dropped off right under the iconic Chinatown archway and began exploring Glodok, an urban village in Taman Sari. The lanes were narrow, lively, sometimes sketchy — but we emerged unscathed and exhilarated.

From Glodok to Kota Tua

After wandering through Chinatown, we continued north toward Kota Tua. Unfortunately, our Action 5’s battery died just as we left Glodok — something we only realised much later.

Kota Tua was buzzing. We walked around the huge plaza, admiring the 17th century Dutch colonial buildings while being serenaded by street buskers scattered across the square. It’s easy to see why this is one of Jakarta’s most popular attractions.

Imlek Dinner at Café Batavia

Eventually, we made our way to the famous Café Batavia for an early Imlek dinner. After chatting with our waiter, Baim, we ordered:

• Sop Buntut (Oxtail Soup)
• Nasi Campur Meneer (Dutch style mixed rice)
• Terung Telur Balado (Eggplants with sambal)
• Si Jagur Punch
• 2 Bir Pletok
• Coca Cola

The meal was excellent — rich flavours, warm ambience, and a perfect setting for Chinese New Year. We’re happy to say Café Batavia lives up to the hype.

A Close Call

After dinner, we took another stroll across the plaza before heading toward Jakarta Kota Station.

Then something happened.

We almost fell victim to a pickpocket gang. A man in a white hoodie and a woman in a long sleeved white blouse had unzipped my camera backpack. Thankfully, Cat noticed the open zipper in time. Nothing was taken, but the shock was real.

We reached the station safely and asked a security officer for advice. He suggested taking the Bogor train to Manggarai, then switching to another train to Sudirman.

Midway through the ride, we decided to get off at Cikini Station instead and hailed a fixed fare Bluebird taxi for IDR46,000 (approximately MYR12/USD3/EUR3) back to Thamrin Executive Residence.

Safe at Home

Back in familiar surroundings, we finally exhaled. The adrenaline was still pumping, but we were grateful nothing worse had happened. We vowed to be more cautious moving forward.

CGK Day 4 │ AIRBNB: An Update • Thamrin Executive Residence!

Home Away From Home

We picked you up again after taking a Bluebird taxi from Dukuh Atas LRT Station back to Thamrin Executive Residence.

Even though we had featured Sigit’s lovely unit before, we felt an update was in order — because this time, the place looked even better than we remembered. A lot of improvements had been made since our last stay in October 2024, and it truly felt like coming home.

What’s New

Among the upgrades we noticed were:

• New curtains in every room
• Spick and span kitchen utensils
• Fresh cleaning cloths
• New towels
• Floors scrubbed and shining in every room
• A clean, dust free balcony
• Furniture freshly polished and gleaming

Small touches, but together they made the unit feel refreshed, cared for, and even more welcoming.

Thank you, Sigit, for maintaining this space so well — it’s no wonder this unit continues to endear itself to us.

BDO Day 3 │ BANDUNG to JAKARTA • Let's Whoosh!

Whoosh Again

We had another early night and woke up refreshed. By 7:00am we were up, and by 8:30am we had checked out of the Airbnb.

We hailed a fixed fare Bluebird taxi for IDR26,000 (≈ MYR7/USD2/EUR2) to Stasiun Bandung, where we would catch the KA Feeder train to the Padalarang bullet train station.

The taxi picked us up at 8:50am and dropped us off fifteen minutes later. A porter immediately took charge of our luggage and guided us into the waiting lounge.

While we waited, Cat dashed outside to buy goodies from the nearby stalls — IDR214,000 (≈ MYR58/USD13/EUR13) worth of treats.

By the time she returned, the train had arrived. The same porter escorted us to our coach, placed our bags in the luggage racks, and received a small token of appreciation from us.

KA Feeder to Padalarang

The KA Feeder departed at 9:24am and arrived at Stasiun Padalarang twenty minutes later. Cat then wandered into a Kartika Sari shop and picked up even more goodies — IDR167,000 (≈ MYR45/USD10/EUR10) this round.

We submitted our bags for inspection and headed straight into the VIP Lounge.

Three Hours in the Lounge

We spent the next three hours relaxing — I worked on our first Bandung video while Cat enjoyed the fast Wi Fi and comfy seats. As luck would have it, a lion dance performance took place in the station to celebrate the first day of Chinese New Year. A festive surprise, and a lovely way to pass the time.

At noon, we took a short walk around the station. I got a hot Thai Coffee, while Cat chose an Iced Thai Green Tea from Dum Dum — IDR50,000 (≈ MYR13/USD3/EUR3) for both. Since Cat was still full from her sweet cakes, I grabbed a Spicy Italian sandwich from Subway for IDR56,000 (≈ MYR15/USD3/EUR3).

Back on the Bullet Train

At 1:10pm, boarding began. Another porter helped us with our bags and received a small tip. The train departed right on schedule at 1:18pm, and thirty minutes later we arrived at Halim Station.

We disembarked and walked across to the LRT station, where we finally got our hands on the Jakarta Tourist Pass (locally called the Kartu Jek) for IDR55,000 (≈ MYR15/USD3/EUR3) each. The card came preloaded with IDR25,000 (≈ MYR5/USD1/EUR1), and we topped up another IDR50,000 (≈ MYR13/USD3/EUR3).

The freedom this card gives us is incredible — we can now ride the LRT, MRT, KRL, and TransJakarta buses with ease.

We caught the LRT at 2:05pm and arrived at Dukuh Atas thirty minutes later.

Back to Sigit’s Lovely Apartment

From Dukuh Atas, we hailed a fixed fare Bluebird taxi for IDR33,000 (≈ MYR9/USD2/EUR2) back to — where else — Sigit’s lovely apartment at Thamrin Executive Residence.

The Shopping Finale

While eating, we befriended Intan and her mother at the next table. We chatted, laughed, and exchanged Instagram pages — a lovely little Bandung moment.

Exploring Ciwalk

After settling the bill, we began exploring Ciwalk properly. We eventually found a gelato stall and tried a medium cup combining Blackpink and Cookies flavours for IDR40,000 (≈ MYR9/USD2/EUR2).

We wandered a bit more before heading out to Jalan Cihampelas, hunting for a leather belt. I eventually settled on a double sided belt for IDR490,000 (≈ MYR133/USD30/EUR29). Much later did I only realise that I fell victim to a scam: the belt was not made of leather, and the buckle fell apart months later!

We continued browsing in search of a leather jacket for Brendan, but the prices — IDR1,400,000 to IDR1,800,000 — were a little steep. Plus, guessing his size was nearly impossible since every design had different measurements.

Final Treats & Heading Back

We walked back to Ciwalk and bought two slices of cake from Chateraise for IDR118,000 (≈ MYR32/USD7/EUR7).

Then we hailed our final fixed fare Bluebird taxi of the day — IDR43,000 (≈ MYR12/USD3/EUR3) — back to the Airbnb.

The Shopping Continues

We picked you up again right after we hailed a fixed fare Bluebird taxi for IDR39,000 (≈ MYR9/USD2/EUR2) to our next shopping destination: Paris Van Java.

We arrived at 11:10am and began exploring this vast, open air mall — a mix of boutiques, cafés, and long corridors that seemed to stretch endlessly.

Slow Start

An hour in, our haul was… toiletries.

Not exactly the shopping explosion we expected — but Bandung was only warming us up.

The Shopping Begins

We had an early night and woke up feeling fully recharged. After showering and getting ready, we were out the door by 8:30am.

We hailed a fixed fare Bluebird taxi for IDR61,000 (≈ MYR17/USD4/EUR4) to our first destination of the day: Rumah Mode Factory Outlet. Since we arrived early, we headed to the sprawling food avenue for breakfast while waiting for Rumah Mode to open at 9:30am.

Breakfast Before Battle

We walked around the stalls and settled on:

First Walkabout in Bandung

We picked you up again right after checking into our Airbnb. While Cat busied herself with laundry, I sorted through the day’s footage. Once everything was spinning in the washer, we took a short nap and waited for the laundry to finish.

At 5:15pm, we left the Airbnb and began our first walk in Bandung. We strolled along Jalan Tera, turned left at El Hotel onto Jalan Merdeka, then right onto Jalan Lembong, and finally made our way to the famed Jalan Braga.

Braga Street

Braga was packed — pedestrians everywhere, both sides of the street overflowing. We ducked into Braga Citywalk hoping for a breather, but the mall felt underwhelming, so we stepped back out into the crowd and walked to the end of Braga Street.

After a moment of indecision, we decided to head back to the Airbnb. We got a little lost, but eventually found our way back to Jalan Tera and Tamansari Tera Residence.

Sudirman Street Day & Night Market

Sitting in the lobby, we decided to give Sudirman Street Day & Night Market a try. We hailed a fixed fare Bluebird taxi for IDR32,000 (≈ MYR9/USD2/EUR2). The driver explained the heavy crowds — Indonesia was enjoying a five day weekend from Jan 25 to Jan 29, celebrating both Isra and Mi’raj and Imlek (Lunar New Year).

As soon as we arrived, rows of red lanterns greeted us. Smoke from sizzling woks drifted through the air — always a good sign.

Barely 100 metres in, we spotted Sedap Purwakarta, proudly claiming to serve the best Chinese food since 1970. We took our seats and ordered:

• Nasi Ayam Kuluyuk (Sweet & Sour Chicken)
• Nasi Bistik Sapi (Beef Steak style Rice)

While waiting, I wandered off and bought Cakue (Youtiao) — both the original and the “legend” versions — from a stall across the table.

Then I hunted for drinks and returned with a lemonade and passion fruit juice from the rather unfriendly Wedrink stall.

Cat added a bowl of Ronde Kuah Gula Merah from Ronde Jahe Senly, also across from us.

Our first dinner in Bandung — at our first Bandung “food court” — came to IDR167,000 (≈ MYR45/USD10/EUR10).

Heading Back

After dinner, we took a slow stroll around the market to admire the sheer variety of stalls. Eventually, we hailed another Bluebird taxi for IDR40,000 (≈ MYR9/USD2/EUR2) back to the Airbnb.

Tamansari Tera Residence

We picked you up again as we left Bandung Station, heading to our Airbnb ten minutes away. The Bluebird fare was IDR50,000 (≈ MYR14/USD3/EUR3), and upon arrival we were greeted by Pak Deni, one of the unit’s co hosts. He helped us store our bags at reception and promised to prepare the unit as soon as possible since we were more than two hours early.

Lunch at Dapur 33

With time to burn, we thought of walking around to look for lunch — then realised there was a restaurant inside the building. We walked into Dapur 33 and were pleasantly surprised to find a menu full of local Sundanese dishes.

We were recommended to try:

• Timbel Ayam Bakar (grilled chicken)
• Timbel Gepuk (grilled beef)
• 2 Sugar Free Iced Tea
• Coffee with Milk (for me)
• Pisang Sale — dried banana fritters (for Cat)

Our simple yet delightful first meal in Bandung came to IDR140,000 (≈ MYR38/USD9/EUR8).

We lingered at Dapur 33, enjoying the calm atmosphere, until we received a message from Pak Deni at 1:15pm — our unit was ready.

Checking In

We met him at the lobby, collected the access card, and rode the elevator up to Unit 1103A. The unit was simple, clean, and well appointed — we’ll let the footage speak for itself.

After depositing our bags, we headed to the 6th floor to check out the swimming pool and gym. Both were small and modest, but they served their purpose.

The unit faces Mount Manglayang (if we’re not mistaken), giving it a calm, soothing ambience. At RM149.34 (≈ USD34/EUR32) per night, it truly offered great value for money — though we’ll admit it felt like a slight downgrade after Sigit’s lovely apartment in Jakarta.

BDO Day 1 │ JAKARTA to BANDUNG • Bullet Train!

Bandung

We’d heard so much about this regency — a shopper’s paradise, a cool climate escape, a place everyone seems to rave about. The main reason our Jakarta shopping had been relatively muted was simple: we were saving our energy (and money!) for Bandung.

We had an early night and woke up at 6:30am. Most of our packing was done the night before, so we only had a few loose ends to tie up. We got ready, checked out of Sigit’s lovely Airbnb, and left a small memento for him in the fridge.

At 8:00am, we headed downstairs and hailed a fixed fare Bluebird taxi to Stasiun Kereta Cepat Halim, the bullet train station. The fare was IDR95,000 (≈ MYR26/USD6/EUR6), and the ride took about 35 minutes.

The Bullet Train Adventure

At the station, we tried to buy tickets from the kiosks — only to discover that the next available train, regardless of class, was in the afternoon. Not ideal.

We tried our luck at the ticketing counter… and surprisingly secured seats on the 9:40am train.

We bought First Class tickets for IDR600,000 (≈ MYR162/USD37/EUR35) each to Stasiun Padalarang, both for today’s trip and our return journey two days later.

Because of our large bags, security advised us to take the elevator up to Level 2. After the scan, we were ushered into the VIP lounge at 9:00am.

At 9:17am, boarding began. A kind porter helped carry our heavy luggage up the escalator and into our coach — we thanked him with a small tip. We even managed a few selfies at the front of the train before it departed at 9:40am.

Five minutes into the journey, our hostess handed out a small goodie bag of light refreshments.

Within Jakarta city limits, the train cruised at 140–150 kph, but soon accelerated to well over 300 kph.

We made a brief stop at Stasiun Karawang at 9:56am, then continued toward Padalarang. Somewhere between Cikampek and Purwakarta, the train paused unexpectedly for a few minutes before resuming its journey.

Arrival in Padalarang

We arrived at Stasiun Padalarang at 10:15am, disembarked, and looked for the connecting train into Bandung city centre.

To our surprise, our First Class tickets included an usher, who guided us past the long queue and straight onto the KA Feeder train to Stasiun Bandung.

Our bags were placed safely in the coach at the front, and at 10:30am, we departed — our first real glimpse of Bandung unfolding outside the window.

We arrived at Stasiun Bandung half an hour later. Another porter appeared, took charge of our bags, guided us out of the station, and placed us into the first available Bluebird taxi.

Ten minutes later, we were on our way to our Airbnb.

Night Stroll

We picked you up again right after Pak Indra’s visit to the Airbnb. After escorting him to the lobby, we headed back up, got ready, and left the unit at 6:00pm.

Back to Sarinah… Again

We took the exact same route as this morning — past Plaza Indonesia, across Jalan M.H. Thamrin, and continued north. Two kilometres and half an hour later, we arrived at Sarinah Mall… again.

We had unfinished business.

We went straight to Kamalika Artprints on the first floor and bought:

• Cat’s printed fabric tote bag
• Cat’s printed polyester shopping bag
• My mini printed polyester shopping bag

Total: IDR596,000 (≈MYR163/USD38/EUR35).

Dinner at Pasar Nusantara

Only then did we realise something important — in all the excitement of Pak Indra’s visit, we had completely forgotten about lunch.

So we headed down to Pasar Nusantara, Sarinah’s well known food court. After a quick browse, we settled on Sop Konro Cendana, where we ordered:

• Coto Makassar (Traditional Beef Soup) with rice
• Sop Iga (Beef Rib Soup) with rice

Together with drinks from Hop Hop, our simple but fulfilling dinner came to IDR201,600 (≈MYR55/USD13/EUR12).

Heading Back

We grabbed a couple of bottles of drinking water from Pasarina, then hailed a fixed fare Bluebird taxi for IDR30,000 (≈MYR8/USD2/EUR2) back to the Airbnb.

Once inside, we began packing in earnest — tomorrow would be a big day.

Car Free Sunday

We woke up at 6:30am and were out the door an hour later. We took our familiar route alongside Thamrin City, then turned right, heading east past both the West and East Malls of Grand Indonesia.

Before long, we reached Jalan M.H. Thamrin — completely free of cars. Both sides of the wide boulevard were filled with pedestrians, joggers, cyclists, families, and even the occasional rollerblader. Apart from the TransJakarta buses, not a single motorised vehicle was in sight.

The morning was cool and breezy, and we enjoyed every minute of the walk.

The Long Walk to Sarinah

We continued north along Jalan M.H. Thamrin until the intersection with Jalan Kebun Sirih, where we made a U turn and headed south again, looking for our intended destination.

Two kilometres and forty five minutes later, we arrived at Sarinah Mall — just in time for breakfast.

Breakfast at Société

We chose Société, mainly because it offered outdoor dining — something we always relish.

From their small breakfast menu, we ordered:

• Breakfast Wrap
• Beef Bacon & Cheese Toasties
• Hazelnut Latte
• Iced Avocado Milk

Total: IDR304,920 (≈MYR83/USD19/EUR18).

We spent the next hour enjoying our meal and the lively street view before heading inside the mall.

After a quick potty break, we began browsing properly and eventually bought:

We picked you up again right after checking into the Airbnb. A quick change, a splash of water on the face, and we were out the door.

The Hunt for a JAK Card

Our first mission was to find a JAK Card, the prepaid card used for trains and TransJakarta buses. We walked to the Indomaret beside Thamrin Residences — no luck. Then we tried the Family Mart next door — also no luck.

Deflated but not defeated, we decided to head toward Grand Indonesia to check out the street food scene we remembered from before. But that too seemed to have vanished.

Dinner at Three Uncles

With hunger setting in, we headed down to the lower ground floor and settled on the first restaurant we saw: Three Uncles.

We browsed the menu outside, placed our order at the counter, and got:

• Yang Chow Chicken Fried Rice
• X.O. Seafood Fried Rice
• Sweet & Sour Chicken
• Romaine with Oyster Sauce
• 2 Iced Wintermelon Tea

Total: IDR294,800 (≈MYR80/USD18/EUR17).

It was our first proper meal of the day — simple, satisfying, and exactly what we needed.

A Fragrance Detour

Right outside the restaurant was a HINT stall selling local Indonesian perfumes. We’re always curious about locally made fragrances, so we asked for their best sellers.

We ended up with:

• Dragon for Men (50ml)
• Metaverse for Women (50ml)

With a 30% discount, the total came to IDR390,000 (≈MYR106/USD24/EUR23) — a great deal for two bottles.

Supermarket Stop

Before heading back, we stopped at The FoodHall to pick up some cut fruits for IDR154,708 (≈MYR42/USD10/EUR9).

Back to the Airbnb

We took a brisk walk back to the Airbnb for some much needed rest and recovery.

CGK Day 1 │ Train to JAKPUS • Hello Thamrin Executive Residence!

Soekarno Hatta to Jakarta Pusat

We picked you up again just after clearing the final hurdle — Customs. Once that was done, we stepped out of Soekarno Hatta Terminal 3 at exactly 6:00pm.

Skytrain to SHIA

To get into central Jakarta, we first needed to catch the Skytrain to Terminal 1. We took the escalator up to the first floor and walked to the Terminal 3 Skytrain station. A train soon arrived, and we rode it to Terminal 1, where we took an elevator down to the Soekarno Hatta Integrated Airport Railway Station (SHIA).

At SHIA, we bought our tickets from the kiosk — IDR75,000 (≈MYR20/USD5/EUR4) each — to BNI City Station in central Jakarta.

Our train was scheduled for 6:42pm, and it arrived right on time. Once our luggage was secured, we settled into our seats and stared out into the Jakarta dusk.

The Unexpected Reverse

Then something funny happened. At Duri Station, the train reversed direction. Normally this would send Cat into full panic mode — sitting backwards is a guaranteed trigger for her motion sickness.

But this time, we were prepared. We quickly switched seats so we could continue facing forward.

We arrived at BNI City Station at 7:30pm, right on schedule.

Into the City

We disembarked, took an elevator up to exit the station, then another elevator down to street level. From there, it was a short walk to Dukuh Atas, where we hailed a Bluebird taxi for IDR31,000  (≈MYR8/USD2/EUR2) to our Airbnb: Thamrin Executive Residence.

Yes — we returned to Sigit’s lovely apartment, a place we had truly enjoyed on our previous trip. The reception staff recognised us and even gave us a rare half smile.

We collected the unit key and access card, made our way up to Unit 26BA, freshened up, and headed out again.

CGK Day 1 │ KUL to CGK • KLIA to Soekarno-Hatta!

Back in Batavia

Barely three months had passed since our last visit. Brendan was knee deep in his post graduate exam week but still managed to send us to KL Sentral’s KL City Air Terminal at 8:30am. We said our goodbyes and headed inside.

As always, we bought our KLIA Express return tickets online, enjoying RM15 off each, so they cost RM85 (≈ USD19/EUR18) per person. This is important because the only way to access the KL City Air Terminal is with these tickets. We scanned them at the turnstile and were in.

For now, KL City Air Terminal caters only to Malaysia Airlines, Batik Air, and KLM.

We submitted our yellow submarines for security screening before checking them in. Our bags weighed 32kg, well within our 40kg allowance. Learning from our previous Jakarta trip, we had already purchased extra luggage for the return.

We exited the terminal and crossed back through the KLIA Express gates using the same tickets. The train arrived shortly after.

KLIA & The Long Wait

The train departed KL Sentral at 9:20am and arrived at KLIA half an hour later. We rode the elevator up to Departures and wandered around before stopping at Borneo Pearls, where Cat bought a pair of earrings for RM28 (≈ USD/EUR6).

We then chilled at Nooodles, sharing some finger foods for RM54.60 (≈ USD/EUR12). Just as we were settling in, MAS notified us that our departure gate had changed to H4.

We were due to board MH721 at 1:30pm, so at 11:00am we headed to the Departure Hall. It was our first time using the MyBorderPass mobile app instead of the autogates — smooth and fuss free.

We cleared Immigration and Customs easily, then browsed the shops.

Then came the dreaded news:

• Flight delayed from 1:30pm to 3:40pm.
• And the gate changed again — now H10.

With nearly four hours to burn, we camped at the Starbucks closest to the H gates. At 2:40pm, we made the long walk to H10… only to discover MAS had switched it back to H4.

After a long wait, we passed the final, intense security checkpoint and took our seats at the lounge. Boarding began at 3:00pm, and we got on board ten minutes later. The plane pushed back at 3:55pm and took off around 4:10pm.

Touchdown in Jakarta

The flight was smooth. About 1 hour 20 minutes later, we began our descent. MH710 touched down at 4:55pm local time.

Kudos to Captain Salleh Salleh and Chief Stewardess Sharina for an excellent flight.

We disembarked and boarded a shuttle bus to the main terminal.

This time, we came prepared — all health and customs declarations were completed in advance:

Cat had trouble with her eVisa application, so we had to get our passports stamped the old fashioned way.

From there, everything was smooth. We collected our yellow submarines from Carousel 2, then presented our printed customs QR code to the officer.

Saturday Drive │ Mitsui Outlet Park • Sushi King

Shopping in KLIA

With a week to go before our return trip to Batavia, we thought we’d go in search of a suitable messenger bag for my cameras.

Cat had read about attractive offers at Mitsui Outlet Park, so at 9:45am we headed downstairs and hopped into BiBi. The drive was smooth and uneventful, except for a short stretch of congestion along the North–South Expressway near Nilai.

We turned off toward KLIA and arrived within the hour.

Outlet Browsing

We browsed most of the stores offering marked down prices, but nothing tempted us enough to part with our hard earned money — until we walked into the Levi’s store.

They were running a buy two get one free promotion, and we couldn’t resist. In the end, I walked away with three pairs of 505 straight cut stretchable jeans for an unbelievable RM152.66 (≈ USD34/EUR33) each.

A rare steal.

Sushi King Lunch

We continued browsing before deciding on an early lunch. After strolling past the eateries on the first floor, we settled on Sushi King — Cat’s favourite cuisine, and surprisingly my first time there.

We ordered a jug of green tea and helped ourselves to the revolving conveyor belt of treats. Between the two of us, we polished off eleven plates, which came to RM56.60 (≈ USD13/EUR12).

Bath & Body Works

After lunch, we resumed our stroll and eventually ended up at Cat’s favourite store — Bath & Body Works. We walked out with RM75.00  (≈ USD17/EUR16) worth of scented products.

With our shopping done, we made our way back to BiBi.

Heading Home

We hit the same patch of congestion along the North–South Expressway before turning onto the Maju Expressway (MEX). About an hour later, we arrived home.

A simple outing, but a satisfying one.

Saturday Walkabout │ Pavilion Bukit Jalil • Sogo KL

Walkabout

It’s our first video of 2025, so we decided to ride the LRT to Bukit Jalil. We left home at 9:45am and walked a short distance to the Bandaraya LRT Station.

We caught a train on the Putra Heights Line at 10:00am for RM3.50 (≈USD/EUR0.80) and arrived at Awan Besar half an hour later. From there, we made our way to the bus hub and hopped onto the free double decker shuttle bus to Pavilion Bukit Jalil.

We reached the mall at 10:45am. Interestingly, the street level sits at Level 3, so we made our way down to Level 2, where we took photos of the Chinese New Year decorations before continuing our stroll to Level 1.

Early Lunch at Nanyang Café

We spotted Nanyang Café with no queues — a rare sight — so we settled in for an early lunch. Our meal came to RM78.30, and of everything we ordered, the Nanyang Tea stood out. I’d definitely come back for that.

Jewellery & Jersey

We resumed exploring and headed up to Level 4, where we browsed Elfi Jewellery for Cat’s belated birthday present. After some time, Cat decided on a few items, including a pair of couple rings. The total came to RM1,022.00 (≈ USD227/EUR222).

Her ring needed resizing, so we were asked to return later.

We continued our stroll and walked into an Adidas store. Here, I finally found the Manchester United blue away jersey in my size for RM329.00 (≈ USD73/EUR71).

We then doubled back to Elfi Jewellery to collect Cat’s ring before rushing up to the top floor for a better view of the lion dance happening at the main foyer.

Ice Cream & Bath & Body Works

After the performance, we treated ourselves to a scoop of ice cream each at Inside Scoop, then headed up to Level 3 to visit Bath & Body Works. We walked out with RM172.80 (≈ USD44/EUR37) worth of scented products.

By then, it was past 3:00pm.

Heading Back

We stepped out of Pavilion Bukit Jalil and were lucky enough to catch the 3:20pm free shuttle bus back to Awan Besar LRT Station — the next one wouldn’t arrive until 5:10pm.

We caught the LRT back to Bandaraya for the same RM3.50 (≈ USD/EUR0.80) fare and arrived half an hour later. From there, we walked into Sogo KL for our final errand of the day: pillows.

We headed up to Level 5 and, after consulting with the salesperson, bought five pillows — three firm ones and two fluffy ones — for RM254.00 (≈ USD57/EUR55).

With that, we walked back home.
