Going Home: MH2513 KCH ✈ KUL

Going Home — Until We Meet Again, Kuching

I woke up at 8:00am and promptly ordered breakfast from McDonald’s via Grab. Cat woke up shortly after and received the delivery, and once Brendan was up, we had our breakfast and began packing our things away.

We left Adelyn’s Airbnb at 10:30am and arrived at Kuching International Airport (KIA) about fifteen minutes later. I dropped Cat and Brendan off at the Departure Hall and waited while they unloaded our luggage.

Our good buddy Awang Amirul was again indisposed, so I drove the rental car into the airport car park, secured it, and sent him photos of its location. Then I made my way to the Departure Hall to rejoin the family.

Waiting for MH2513

We waited until 11:30am to check in. With time to burn before our flight, we headed to Starbucks for drinks. Although the outlet was fairly large, the barista was also the cashier, which meant a longer wait than usual.

Half an hour later, we made our way to the Departure Hall, cleared Immigration and security, and headed to Gate 5. Thankfully, MH2513 was still on schedule to depart at 1:30pm, so we had less than an hour to wait.

Boarding began at 1:00pm, and we reached our seats twenty minutes later. We were seated along Row 10, which unfortunately had no window — meaning no take off or landing footage this time.

In the Air

MH2513 began taxiing at 1:30pm and took off ten minutes later. Apart from a few air pockets, the flight was smooth and uneventful.

We were soon served our on board meals:

  • Brendan & I — Chicken with Rice
  • Cat — Seafood with Rice

Simple, warm, and comforting — the usual Malaysia Airlines fare.

We touched down at 3:10pm.

Back on the Peninsula

We collected our luggage from Carousel L, then headed to the ERL station. We caught the 4:00pm train and arrived at KL Sentral about half an hour later.

From there, we hailed a 6 seater Grab for RM25.00 (≈ USD/EUR5) and reached home just before 5:00pm.

Kuching, We Miss You Already

Another chapter closed; another set of memories tucked safely away.

Kuching, with your food, your warmth, your rain, your river, and your people — we miss you already.

KCH Day 5 │ DARUL HANA Musical Fountain

Darul Hana Musical Fountain — Music, Light, and River Magic

On our penultimate night in Kuching, and after our simple dinner at Tower Market, we took a slow stroll along the Darul Hana Bridge. We reached the end of the bridge, then doubled back just in time to catch the spectacular Darul Hana Musical Fountain show — one of the highlights of the Kuching Waterfront.

The fountain sits directly in front of the beautifully illuminated Sarawak State Legislative Assembly Building (DUN), and when the show begins, the entire riverfront transforms. What was moments ago a calm, dark stretch of water suddenly bursts into life.

The fountain jets shoot up in perfect rhythm to the music — sometimes gentle and swaying, sometimes powerful and dramatic. Multicoloured lights sweep across the water, painting the river in shades of blue, purple, gold, and red. At its peak, the fountain forms tall arcs that seem to dance across the Sarawak River, with mist drifting toward the bridge like a cool evening breeze.

Every few moments, the lights shift to highlight the DUN building behind it, making the entire scene feel like a grand stage performance. The reflections on the water double the spectacle — lights above, lights below, all moving in harmony.

The show lasts only a few minutes, but it feels immersive, almost cinematic. Locals and tourists alike pause along the waterfront, phones raised, children pointing excitedly, couples leaning on the railings to take it all in. It’s one of those Kuching moments that feels both festive and peaceful at the same time.

A Four Minute Treat

We hope you’ll enjoy our 4 minute footage of this excellent musical fountain show. It’s one of those Kuching experiences that feels both grand and intimate — a perfect way to close out our final night by the river.

Tomorrow, we leave on a jet plane 😔

KCH Day 5 │ DARUL HANA Bridge

Darul Hana Bridge — Kuching’s Shining Icon

On our penultimate night in Kuching, and after our simple dinner at Tower Market, we took a slow stroll toward the Darul Hana Bridge. This S shaped pedestrian suspension bridge, opened to the public in November 2017, has become one of the city’s most recognisable landmarks.

Its two viewing decks offer excellent 360 degree panoramic views of the Sarawak River — the kind of scenery that makes you pause, breathe, and take it all in.

A Bridge That Defines a City

The bridge was designed to complement the new State Legislative Assembly Complex (DUN), forming a dynamic urban landscape set against elegant parks and water features. Together, they create a visual identity that is unmistakably Kuching.

This RM35 million structure links the Kuching Waterfront on the south bank to the new DUN, the Botanical and Orchid Gardens, and the villages and attractions on the north bank. It also connects pedestrians to the city centre’s highlights — Plaza Merdeka, the international hotel strip, and the cafés around the old Court House.

A bridge that isn’t just a crossing, but a connector of communities.

KCH Day 5 │ KUCHING Water Front: Tower Market • Darul Hana Bridge)

Waterfront — A Fitting Final Night

Our penultimate day in Kuching, and we spent the afternoon indoors. I worked on our footage before taking a much needed hour’s nap.

We left Adelyn’s Airbnb at 7:00pm. Brendan had left earlier to meet his varsity debate club buddies at a smoke house in Tabuan Jaya.

We hailed a Grab for RM7.00 (≈ USD/EUR2) and headed to the Open Air Market food stalls near the riverfront.

Hawker Dinner by the River

We ordered a spread of local favourites:

  • Three Chwee Kueh (Steamed Rice Cakes) — RM1.00 each
  • Three Sio Bee (Minced Pork Parcels) — RM1.00 each
  • Two bowls Lai Ci Kang (Sweet Lotus Seed Soup) — RM4.00 each
  • Two bowls Red Kolo Mee — RM6.00 each
  • Gula Apong Ice Cream — RM3.50

Our simple hawker dinner came to RM29.50 (≈ USD/EUR6).

Light, comforting, and very Kuching.

Walking the Waterfront

After dinner, we walked to the Kuching Waterfront and made our way across the Darul Hana Bridge, taking photos of the beautifully illuminated surroundings.

We reached the end of the bridge, then doubled back just in time to capture footage of the Darul Hana Musical Fountain — always a magical sight.

Be sure to catch our next videos on:

  • The walk across Darul Hana Bridge
  • The Darul Hana Musical Fountain

Heading Home

We continued strolling along the riverfront before hailing another Grab — again RM7.00 (≈ USD/EUR2) — back to Adelyn’s Airbnb.

It was a fitting end to our last night in Kuching.

Tomorrow, we leave on a jet plane 😔

KCH Day 5 │ MAKANSARI Food Street • Uncle Dom BBQ

Dayak Cuisine — Aiman Mall Edition

After our little excursion to Samarahan’s riverbank, we continued driving in search of a place to eat and naturally ended up at Makansari Food Street in Aiman Mall.

Today, we were thankful that the local Dayak stall was open — so we ordered up a storm.

Brendan went for his favourite:

  • Kolo Mee — RM5

While Cat and I feasted on:

  • Pork in Lemongrass Soy Sauce — RM12
  • Mixed Pork Soup — RM12
  • Crispy Pork — RM12
  • Round of drinks — RM7.90

Together with white rice, our Dayak lunch came to RM48.90 (approximately USD/EUR10).

A hearty, flavourful meal — exactly what we needed.

What’s Next

Tonight, we hope to visit a Dayak smoke house, so be sure to catch our next video!

KCH Day 5 │ SAMARAHAN and Back: Uncle Dom • FELC

Santai — A Much Needed Chill Day

Our penultimate day in Kuching, and after the exertions of the past few days, we decided to have a santai — a proper chillaxing day. We slept well, and I woke at 6:30am to a gloriously cool, soothing morning.

I opened the front doors and let the fresh Kenyalang Park air flow through the Airbnb. After a shower, I ordered breakfast from McDonald’s via Grab.
Brendan and Cat were still fast asleep, so I let them rest while I worked on the ever growing mountain of footage from the past few days.

They woke up a few hours later, and we left the Airbnb at 11:30am.

Exploring Samarahan (Properly This Time)

Our first destination was Kota Samarahan again — but this time, we wanted to explore the actual township beyond Summer Mall.

We arrived at a row of stalls selling fruits and local cakes by the river, but couldn’t find a proper place to eat. We walked toward what looked like a jetty, but a large sign warning of crocodiles sent us scurrying back to the car.

Still hungry, we drove on in search of lunch and naturally ended up at Makansari Food Street at Aiman Mall.

Be sure to watch the next video dedicated to our Dayak lunch.

Returning the Graduation Robes

After lunch, we drove (yet again) to UNIMAS so Brendan could return his graduation robe and hat. Before he did, Cat and I took turns posing with the garb at his faculty’s photo booth — a fun little moment for the both of us.

We then parted ways: Brendan went to meet a few friends who were graduating today, while Cat and I drove back to Adelyn’s Airbnb.

KCH Day 4 │ BRENDAN's Graduation!

Brendan’s Graduation — The Big Day

We woke up at 6:30am and checked out of My Inn Hotel an hour later. From there, we drove to the CITDS parking area allocated for parents and made the short walk to DeTAR Putra.

Since it was only 7:45am, we took a stroll along the row of stalls outside and picked out a sweet, blue themed graduation bouquet for Brendan. Soon after, we parted ways — Brendan had to register before 8:30am, while we were ushered into a large tent for light refreshments.

Entering the Hall

We waited for about an hour before parents were admitted into the main hall, batch by batch. We finally entered at 8:15am.

The ceremony began a little after 10:00am with the arrival of the Premier of Sarawak, The Right Honourable Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari Abang Openg, who also serves as Chancellor of UNIMAS.

The procession started with PhD graduates, followed by postgraduate students, and finally the fresh graduates — including those from Brendan’s Faculty of Education, Language and Communication.

The Moment He Received His Scroll

Three hours later, Brendan walked across the stage and received his scroll. The ceremony ended at 2:00pm.

As we exited the hall, we realised a heavy downpour had engulfed UNIMAS. Brendan and his fellow graduates were ushered back to their faculty for a smaller, more intimate ceremony, while Cat and I drove to Cempaka College and had a late lunch at Sulaiman Café.

One More Round of Photos

After lunch, at Brendan’s request, we drove to his faculty again to help with an impromptu photography session with his lecturers and fellow graduates. Lots of smiles, lots of memories.

Brendan said his goodbyes, and we left UNIMAS at 4:00pm, arriving back at Adelyn’s Airbnb half an hour later.

Winding Down

We spent the entire evening at home, ordering dinner through Grab and simply resting after a long, emotional, unforgettable day.

What a milestone!

KCH Day 3 │ BRENDAN's Photo Shoot!

Graduation Photo Shoot — Racing the Weather

After lunch at Unplugged Coffee, we decided not to wait for the weather to cool. Instead, we drove straight back to My Inn Hotel so Brendan could change into his graduation garb before heading out again to UNIMAS.

Given Kuching’s erratic weather, we didn’t want to take any chances. Once Brendan was suited up, we immediately set out for the campus.

Stop 1 — His Faculty

The first venue for the photography session was his faculty, the place where his UNIMAS journey began and ended. Brendan posed proudly in front of the building, graduation robes flowing in the breeze.

Stop 2 — Jambatan Cinta

Next, we drove to the bridge across UNIMAS Lake — Jambatan Cinta (The Lover’s Bridge). The soft light, the water, the greenery… it all made for beautiful shots.

Stop 3 — DeTAR

From the lake, we headed to Dataran Tuanku Abdul Rahman (DeTAR). This is where tomorrow’s ceremony will be held, so it felt fitting to capture a few moments here. After that, we took a short stroll back to his faculty for a few more photos.

Stop 4 — Cempaka College

The final photography session was at Cempaka College, Brendan’s old residence. He has bittersweet memories of living here — some good, some not so good, but all memorable in their own way. It was the perfect place to wrap up the shoot.

Beating the Rain

With that, we wrapped up Brendan’s photo shoot and drove back to the hotel. In hindsight, we were thankful for doing it early — dark clouds rolled in soon after.

What’s Next

We can’t wait for Brendan’s graduation ceremony tomorrow. The big day is finally here!

KCH Day 3 │ Kota Samarahan: My Inn Hotel • Unplugged Coffee

Kota Samarahan — Beating the Monday Jam

Kuching is notorious for its Monday morning traffic jams, especially to and from Kota Samarahan. With Brendan’s graduation ceremony happening tomorrow morning, we played it safe and booked a night’s stay at My Inn Hotel, right beside UNIMAS. No stress, no rushing, no risk.

We drove to Kota Samarahan around lunchtime and checked in at 2:00pm:

  • Brendan’s single room — RM163.40
  • Our double room — RM163.40
  • Deposit — RM50.00 per room

(≈ USD36/EUR36 for each room, and USD11/EUR10 deposit.)

We dropped our bags in the rooms and headed out again.

Searching for Dayak Cuisine

We asked the front desk for recommendations on local Dayak cuisine, but being a Sunday, most eateries were closed.

So we drove around the Desa Ilmu area near Aiman Mall, and eventually ended up at an Indonesian restaurant called Unplugged Coffee.

The waiter informed us that many dishes were unavailable on Sundays, so after a quick scan of the menu, we settled on:

  • Nasi Lemak with Fried Chicken
  • Nasi Lemak with Squid Sambal
  • Chicken Chop
  • A variety of drinks

Our late lunch came to RM44.00 (≈ USD/EUR9).

Simple, filling, and enough to keep us going.

Rest Before the Big Day

We drove back to the hotel and rested for a bit, waiting for the weather to cool. Brendan wanted a mini photo session in his graduation garb at several iconic UNIMAS locations — a warm up before the official shoot tomorrow.

KCH Day 2 │ Airbnb: The CountryMan

The CountryMan — Our Home in Kuching

For the second time in a row, we booked our stay with Adelyn, our favourite Airbnb host in Kuching. This time, though, we booked her home through Agoda, since it was cheaper than Airbnb.

Here’s how her Agoda page describes the place:

“Get your trip off to a great start with a stay at this property, which offers a car park free of charge. Conveniently situated in the Kuching City Center part of Kuching, this property puts you close to attractions and interesting dining options. Don't leave before paying a visit to the famous Semenggoh Nature Reserve. This 5 star property is packed with in house facilities to improve the quality and joy of your stay.”

And this is what we wrote on Adelyn’s Airbnb review page:

“A little gem of a home, Adelyn's unit is tastefully furnished and is very cosy. Open the front doors facing the dinosaur park in the evenings to a calm and serene environment. Walk out and find many quaint little eateries and coffee shops serving local dishes. In urgent need of provisions? Don't worry, Everwin is a stone's throw away. If you fancy cooking at home then by all means drop by the local Kenyalang Park Market for all your needs. Adelyn's home provided us from the Peninsula with the opportunity to experience living in a local community, an experience that is priceless!”

Why We Keep Coming Back

Adelyn’s place has become our Kuching home base — cosy, convenient, and surrounded by a real neighbourhood community. The dinosaur park across the street, the evening breeze, the nearby eateries, the Everwin supermarket, the Kenyalang Park Market… everything just fits.

It’s the kind of place that makes you feel like you’re living with Kuching, not just visiting it.

And Yes — We’ll Be Back

No question about it. This won’t be our last stay at The CountryMan.

More Kuching adventures ahead!

KCH Day 2 │ Spring Mall • Food Bazaar

Laksa Quest — Third Time’s the Charm

After yesterday’s exertions, we spent the entire evening at the Airbnb, ordering in something light for supper. We all slept well, and I was the first to wake at 8:00am. After a quick shower, I woke everyone else.

Once everyone was ready, we got into the rental car and left at 10:00am in search of breakfast. We were all in the mood for laksa, so we drove twenty minutes to a riverside spot called Tinot Laksa.

Unfortunately, Waze led us into a cluster of residential homes — no laksa in sight.

Still determined, we turned to Google and were recommended Mom’s Laksa, about ten minutes away. We got there… but couldn’t find suitable parking.

Dejected but undefeated, we decided to head to The Spring Mall, since we had errands to run there anyway.

Laksa at Last — Food Bazaar The Spring

This was our first visit to The Spring, so we asked around for a place serving local cuisine. We were directed to the food court upstairs — Food Bazaar The Spring.

To our delight, one of the stalls sold laksa. We each ordered a bowl, and breakfast came to RM29.40 (approximately USD/EUR6).

Not quite the riverside laksa we imagined, but still satisfying.

A Quick Errand

After breakfast, we walked around a couple of shoe stores. Cat finally found a pair she liked at Padini — she had only brought sneakers and wanted a nice pair of sandals for Brendan’s graduation ceremony tomorrow.

With that sorted, we drove back to Adelyn’s Airbnb, which we’ll feature in the next video.

What’s Next

Stay tuned — tomorrow is graduation day!

KCH Day 1 │ AIMAN Mall

Aiman Mall — Errands Before Settling In

Brendan was a happy camper in the backseat, playing around with his graduation robes and hat the entire drive.

Our next destination was Aiman Mall, where we had several important errands to run:

  • Replacing Brendan’s tattered phone screen protector
  • Picking up antiseptic wash from a local pharmacy
  • Buying sanitising spray and bottles of drinking water from HSL Supermarket
  • Taking away three packets of rice with spiced chicken for RM9.00 each (≈ USD/EUR2)

A productive stop, all things considered.

Arriving at Our Airbnb

We finally made it to our Airbnb at Kenyalang Park at 6:00pm, courtesy of our gracious host Adelyn.

With dinner already in the bag, we spent the evening doing laundry while I began sorting through the voluminous amounts of footage we had captured the entire day.

A long day, but a satisfying one.

KCH Day 1 │ UNIMAS • Graduation Robes

Back in Kuching — Straight to UNIMAS

Having cleared Customs and Immigration at 1:15pm, we walked out of Kuching International Airport to collect our rental car.

As always, we turned to our good buddy Awang Amirul for wheels. He couldn’t meet us this time, so he arranged for his friend Atek to hand over the car instead.

We’re hoping to embark on a Sarawakian road trip next year — Kuching to Miri and back — an epic journey spanning almost 2,000 kilometres. Awang Amirul will definitely be part of that adventure.

Collecting the Graduation Robes

From the airport, we drove straight to UNIMAS, as Brendan needed to collect his graduation robes.

We arrived at DeTAR at 2:00pm, only to find the office still closed for lunch. So we headed to Brendan’s old college, Cempaka, and had drinks at Sulaiman Café while I took a round of antibiotics.

After that, we returned to DeTAR to collect the robes. The process was tedious — lots of forms, checks, and signatures — but absolutely necessary. It took about an hour.

Brendan was overjoyed to finally see his graduation robes for the first time. We have a photo shoot planned around the lake area tomorrow, and he’s already excited.

KCH Day 1 │ Flying to Kuching (MH2520 KUL ✈ KCH)

MH2520 — Flying Back to Kuching

After breakfast at McDonald’s, we headed straight to the Departure Hall. We successfully navigated the security checkpoint and made our way to Gate A5.

Our flight was still scheduled to take off at 10:55am, so we had about an hour to wait.

Boarding began at 10:25am, batch by batch according to groups. After a slight delay in loading luggage, the plane began taxiing at 11:00am.

MH2520 took off at 11:15am.

In the Air

Apart from a few air pockets, the flight was largely uneventful. Soon after, we were served our on board meals:

  • Brendan — Chicken Briyani
  • Cat & I — Fish with Potatoes

It has to be said that we’ve noticed a dip in service lately — the cabin crew felt cold and distant this time.

Touchdown in Kuching

We touched down at 12:50pm. Since the baggage carousel was right beside the washroom, we all went for a much needed pit stop.

While waiting for our luggage, a lady brazenly walked into the men’s washroom by mistake. She beat a hasty retreat, and we had a good chuckle.

We eventually cleared Customs and Immigration and walked out of Kuching International Airport at 1:15pm.

KCH Day 1 │ KL Sentral to KLIA

Flying to Kuching — Graduation Week Begins

Today was the day we flew to Kuching for Brendan’s long awaited graduation ceremony at Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS).

Flights to Kuching are always popular and fill up fast, so the moment UNIMAS confirmed that Brendan’s ceremony would be held on 4th November, we booked our seats immediately — and this was way back in June.

KL Sentral — The Return of In Town Check In

We left our condo at 7:45am and hailed a 6 seater Grab for RM14.00 (≈ USD/EUR3) to KL Sentral.

With the re opening of Malaysia Airlines’ in town flight check in and baggage drop at KL Sentral on 1 September, life has become so much easier for travellers like us. Once we reached KL Sentral, we made a beeline for the MAS counter and got ourselves and our luggage checked in.

Easy peasy lemon squeezy.

Off to KLIA

After checking in, we walked past the ERL turnstiles and caught the 8:15am express train to KLIA.

We arrived about half an hour later. With time to spare before our flight, we decided on a quick breakfast at McDonald’s — and immediately regretted it.

RM30.85 (≈ USD7/EUR6) for a simple breakfast, and half an hour later, we were finally ready to head to the Departure Hall.

What’s Next
