TGG Day 1 │ CHUAN KEE Chicken Rice

Back to Where It All Began

When Cat and I first got married in 1998, we stayed with my parents — just a few hundred metres away from Restoran Chuan Kee. It became our default Friday destination (Terengganu’s weekend) after Mass, and over the years it grew into one of our most cherished routines.

So as always, the moment we arrived in Kuala Terengganu, Chuan Kee became our first port of call.

Familiar Faces, Familiar Warmth

Nothing much has changed. The proprietor greeted us with the same warm smile, as though we had never left Kuala Terengganu. His wife was excited to see us after all these years and took some time to chat and catch up with Cat. It felt like stepping back into a memory — comforting, familiar, and deeply grounding.

The Usual Order

We ordered our usual platter of roasted chicken (serving for three persons). The proprietor remembered our preferences and generously added extra chicken skin and gizzard, just the way we liked it.

The Verdict

After 11 long years, the Hainanese Chicken Rice here remains as excellent as ever. In our books, it is still THE best chicken rice shop in Kuala Terengganu — bar none.

And the damage?

With a round of Iced Chinese Tea for everyone and a good strong cuppa for me, the total came to an astonishing RM22.70 (≈ USD6/EUR5). This is why Chuan Kee remains the very definition of everyday food for the everyday man.

We just wish it weren’t 450 kilometres away.
