A Late Lunch at RNC
We were exhausted from the morning walkabout and ended up taking a nap. By the time we woke up, it was already past lunchtime and our stomachs were starting to grumble. At 2:45pm, we left the homestay and headed downstairs to see what was open.
RNC Food Court, right beside The Majestic Condo, was finally open. Not many stalls were operating, but from the few that were, we ordered:
- Seaweed Soup Noodles
- Minced Meat Noodles
- Rojak Buah (Fruit Salad)
- 2 Kumquat Juice
Everything came to RM30 (about USD7/EUR6). After eating, we headed back to the homestay to rest a little more.
Evening at Gerbang Malam
At 7:00pm, we went out again, walking north along Jalan Dato Tahwil Azar. After crossing Jalan Sultan Iskandar, we arrived at Gerbang Malam — Ipoh’s lively night market.
Often called the Night Gate Market, Gerbang Malam sits along Jalan Dato Tahwil Azar in Taman Jubilee. It comes alive every evening with bright lights, busy stalls, and the constant chatter of buyers and sellers. You’ll find everything here: clothes, accessories, electronics, beauty products, fruits, flowers, and plenty of snacks.
Dinner at Ong Kee
Our first stop was Restoran Tauke Ayam Ong Kee. We ordered the classic Ipoh combination:
- Steamed Chicken
- Bean Sprouts
- Rice
- Soup
- Longan Drink
Our meal came to RM39 (about USD9/EUR8).
Just across the street was Lou Wong — a place we’ve avoided ever since the pandemic, when we were told we couldn’t sit at an empty outdoor table meant for four people, despite the shop being quiet. We left that night and never returned. Their loss, Ong Kee’s gain.
Exploring the Night Market
By the time we finished dinner, the sun had set and the temperature was perfect for exploring. We walked the full length of Gerbang Malam and doubled back, though nothing really caught our eye.
We did, however, stop at Yee Hup Biscuits and bought two bags of assorted biscuits for RM101.20 (about USD24/EUR20). We also picked up three small bottles of balm for Cat’s good friend Kak Ita at RM7 each.
With our shopping done, we crossed Jalan Sultan Iskandar and walked south along Jalan Dato Tahwil Azar back to The Majestic.
Rooftop Views
Before returning to the homestay, we rode the elevator up to Level 21 to visit the rooftop garden. From there, we captured beautiful footage of Ipoh’s night lights and urban skyline.
Then it was back down to Level 11 to call it a night.
Stay tuned for our next video as we make the return drive back to Kuala Lumpur!
