We Miss Russian (and Kazakh) Cuisine
It was the third day of Chinese New Year, and since it was still a public holiday, the city moved at a slower pace. We finished editing a long series of videos from our 24 hour sojourn at Central Market the night before and slept in. By the time we finally woke up, it was already a quarter to eleven. We did not rush. By noon, we were ready to head out for lunch.
Brendan chose to stay home and continue with his beauty sleep, so it was just the two of us. We set our sights on Sri Petaling, where our favourite Kazakh restaurant, Astana, was located. It had been almost two years since we last featured this place on our channel, and we had been longing to return.
Back at Astana
The restaurant was quiet when we arrived, which meant we could choose the best table right in the centre. It felt familiar, comforting, and exactly where we wanted to be. This revisit felt overdue.
We ordered almost the exact same spread as our previous visit:
- Olivie salad
- Borsh
- Beef Plov
- Horsemeat Plov
- 3 skewers of lamb shashlyk
- A jug of Kvas
We also took away half a dozen manty to enjoy later.
Comfort Food from the Steppes
Every dish tasted as good as we remembered. Rich, hearty, and deeply satisfying, this was the kind of meal that lingered long after the plates were cleared. Including the takeaway manty, our lunch came to RM174.00 (≈ USD37/EUR34).
It was a little pricey by our usual standards, but for the quality, flavours, and experience, it was absolutely worth it.
Highly Recommended
Astana remained one of those rare places we could recommend without hesitation. If you ever found yourself craving Russian or Central Asian food in Kuala Lumpur, this was the place.
Some meals fed the stomach.
Others nourished the soul.
This one did both.
