It’s Brendan’s Birthday!
Barely two months after our last trip north, we were heading back again to the island known as The Pearl of the Orient—Penang. This time, it was extra special. The three of us were travelling together to celebrate Brendan’s birthday.
Trying Something New
Instead of taking the ETS train like before, we decided to try the Aeroline bus. At RM60.00 per person (≈ USD13/EUR13), it was about 50% more expensive than regular buses, but we were curious about the experience.
Starting the Journey
Our Sunday began with a short ride on the LRT from Masjid Jamek to KLCC, costing RM1.60 each (≈ USD0.40/EUR0.40). From KLCC, we walked to Corus Hotel, where the Aeroline departure point was located.
Since it was still early morning, we left our luggage at the Aeroline counter and crossed over to Wisma Central for breakfast.
A Simple Breakfast
We kept things light:
- Roti canai
- A round of drinks
Breakfast came to RM9.70 (≈ USD2/EUR2)—simple, quick, and just right before a long trip.
On the Road
Back at Corus Hotel, we waited for the bus. After a careful boarding process, the bus finally departed at 9:40am.
Around 12:00pm, we made a short stop at Simpang Pulai R&R near Ipoh, giving everyone a chance to stretch and grab snacks. Twenty minutes later, we were back on the road.
Like clockwork, we arrived at Queensbay Mall, Penang at 2:30pm.
Arrival in Penang
We stepped into the mall briefly to pick up some essentials—including a packet of laundry detergent—before booking a Grab to our stay.
This time, since Brendan was with us, we booked a two bedroom apartment. Although we had reserved a unit at Hutton Central, we were accommodated at their sister property, Hutton Suites, just a short walk away.
First Meal in Penang
After checking in and dropping off our bags, we wasted no time heading out again. Lunch was at the ever reliable Nasi Kandar Pokok Ketapang.
The meal came to RM27.70 (≈ USD6/EUR6)—delicious, satisfying, and exactly what we needed after the journey.
Settling In
We made a quick stop at Mydin Hypermarket to stock up on bottled water before heading back to the apartment. The rest of the afternoon was spent resting and recharging.
Looking Ahead
As evening approached, we stepped out again for our next walkabout—one that would mark the start of Brendan’s birthday celebrations.
Stay tuned for what came next! 🎉
