KCH Day 2 │ UNIMAS • Premier Food Republic!

Hari Gawai!

With nothing planned we slept in, I woke up at a quarter past eight while Cat rose from her beauty sleep an hour later.

We hopped in the rental car and drove out of Adelyn's homestay at ten bound for Kota Samarahan. It's been a while since we visited Brendan's old university so we set course for UNIMAS https://www.unimas.my/ (short for Universiti Malaysia Sarawak).

Much has changed in terms of the route there as the massive roundabouts have since been replaced with intersections and traffic lights. The drive to UNIMAS took us only twenty minutes and after receiving permission to visit from the security booth we drove in.

Our first port of call was DeTAR, site of Brendan's convocation ceremony. I got out to take some photos before we then headed to Brendan's former college, Cempaka. I also took some photos here then headed to Brendan's former faculty, the Faculty of Education, Language and Communication or FELC for short.

After taking some photos here we headed to the last port of call which was Brendan's former college, Dahlia. More photos ensued. 

After that we finally headed out of UNIMAS bound for Premier Food Republic over at Bandar RIyal https://bit.ly/4kPgqrX for an early lunch. A sprawling collection of food stalls serving all kinds of local cuisine from Dayak to Chinese to Muslim.

We strolled along and eventually settled on the:

Our quite simple yet sumptuous first lunch in Sarawak came to RM25.90 (approximately USD6/EUR5).

We then hopped back into the rental car and headed to Aiman Mall to check out the sights before making our way back to Adelyn's homestay.

KCH Day 1 │ Lim Hock Ann Seafood • 500th Video!

500th Video!

We picked you up again after our late lunch at Kim Coffee Garden over at Kenyalang Park. We spent the afternoon unpacking and settling in before we headed out again for dinner.

I had asked for recommendations on the best seafood restaurants from a colleague of mine at our Kuching branch, and knowing that we would be renting a car recommended that we try the Buntal Esplanade an hour's drive north of Kuching. With this in mind we checked online and settled on Lim Hock Ann https://bit.ly/43S3ziQ as our dinner destination.

We hopped into the rental car at a quarter past five in the evening and arrived at the intended seafood restaurant 45 minutes later. Overlooking the South China Sea it's described as being "renowned for its excellent seafood offerings. Located by the waterfront, the restaurant provides a picturesque setting to enjoy fresh seafood dishes that are a delight to the palate. The menu at Lim Hock Ann Restaurant features a variety of seafood options, from succulent crabs to flavorful prawns and fish, all prepared with expertise and served with local flair. The restaurant's friendly atmosphere and attentive service further complement the dining experience, making it a favorite among locals and tourists alike."

Our first time here, we took our time perusing their menu before settling on:

• Ikan Siakap (Sea Bass) In Teochew Gravy
• Lala in Lemongrass Soup
• Buttered Prawns
• each a serving of White Rice
• each a glass of Kedondong (Ambarella) Juice

Our first dinner in Kuching came to RM126.60 (approximately USD30/EUR26), which was a bargain given that most seafood joints in Kuala Lumpur easily charge at least double the amount.

Mindful of the fact that I was driving we stayed clear of alcohol and the trip back to Adelyn's homestay was uneventful.

KCH Day 1 │ MH2520 KUL to KCH • City One to Kenyalang Park!

Off to Kuching!

We were up at six and were out the door an hour later. Brendan drove us to KL Sentral's KL City Air Terminal ten minutes to seven. He had initially planned to tag along but an upcoming final year project presentation meant that we had to cancel his middle seat 6E.

As always we bought our train tickets online and enjoyed a discount so it only cost us RM43.75 each (approximately USD10/EUR9). 

This is important since the only way to check in at the KL City Air Terminal was with the KLIA Express tickets. We scanned our train tickets at the turnstile and voila! We were in. We submitted our yellow submarines for a security check before checking it in. Our bags weighed 25kgs in total, well within the allowed total of 40kgs. 

We then exited the KL City Air Terminal and walked across past the KLIA Express turnstiles using the same train tickets. The train was already waiting and departed KL Sentral at 7:30am, arriving in KLIA half an hour later. We took the escalators up to the Departure Level and strolled along before having drinks at Costa Coffee. 

Our hot Latte and Iced Strawberry Tea came to RM36.35 (approximately USD9/EUR8). We spent the next hour here people-watching and with two hours till our flight departed we strolled past the domestic departure gates at 9:00am.

We were catching flight MH2520 from Gate B9 that would take off at eleven in the morning.

We spent another hour or so people-watching at the boarding gate waiting area and the boarding process began at 10:30am. Brendan's cancelled middle 6E was occupied by Mr Chong who was kind enough to swap with Cat's aisle seat 6D. The cabin crew did not object to the swap as well.

We pushed back half an hour later, but a delay due to a runway inspection by the airport authorities meant that we eventually took off at 11:25am. The flight was uneventful and we were served our inflight meal half an hour later. We both opted for the Fish with Rice.

MH2520 began its descent at 12:35pm and landed half an hour. We got past Customs & Immigration then collected our luggage from Carousel XX and walked out of Kuching Airport where our regular car rental guy Awang Amirul was waiting. He handed over the keys to the blue Perodua Bezza to us and after fixing our camera onto the windscreen mount made our way to our regular homestay in Kampung Kenyalang Park, hosted by the awesome host Adelyn.

After a quick shower we walked out in search of a late lunch and settled on Kim Coffee Garden where we had:

Our first Sarawakian meal came to RM26.00 (approximately USD6/EUR5). We then walked over to the Everwin Supermarket to get some provisions before heading back to Adelyn's homestay.

Going Home!

Our fifth and final day meant that it was time to head back to Kuala Lumpur. We arose at six and were out the door forty minutes later.

We walked over to where BiBi was parked and after several attempts finally managed to load our luggage into the boot before checking out of the rest house. 

We then drove to Batu Buruk hoping to have breakfast at Kak Pah Nasi Dagang, alas she was not yet open so we began our journey back, eventually driving past the Kuala Terengganu toll plaza at a quarter past seven. 

We stopped at the Paka rest area for breakfast at a quarter past eight and had their unique green Nasi Lemak. Together with a round of drinks our breakfast came to RM23.50 (approximately USD6/EUR5). 

After a quick potty break we resumed our journey at five to nine and the three hour drive was largely uneventful with very light traffic in either direction. Most of the drive was captured in time-lapse so we hope you will enjoy the calm and relaxing journey. We eventually arrived at our home at precisely twelve, which meant that the entire journey including the forty minute pitstop took us five hours.

KT Day 4 │ Pantai Batu Buruk • Kedai Makan MYM!

Batu Buruk!

We picked you up again as the sweltering heat drove us back to the air conditioned comfort of the rest house. A shower picked our spirits up and we soon returned to the home where we spent the next couple of hours going at our respective chores.

Cat eventually took a nap while I completed the second in our series of videos on Kuala Terengganu. With tomorrow's drive in mind we decided to take a drive to the Petronas station at Batu Buruk to top up BiBi's fuel. We first drove to the rest house to pick Brendan up and began our evening drive to Batu Buruk.

We stopped here for a while to take some photos and take in the salty sea breeze. Dusk was soon upon us so we hopped back into BiBi and continued our evening drive along Batu Buruk before eventually continuing onto Jalan Sultan Mahmud. We drove on for a kilometer or two before making a U-turn at Kuala Ibai and doubled back along Jalan Sultan Mahmud.

We then stopped at the Batu Buruk Petronas to top up BiBi's fuel as well as her tyre pressure before continuing on, eventually ending up at Pulau Warisan near the Pasar Besar Kedai Payang. Brendan was feeling hungry so we decided to have dinner at Kedai Makan MYM.Here we quickly settled on their:

• Nasi Minyak Gulai Ayam
• Nasi Minyak Ayam Goreng Kunyit
• 3 Iced Lemon Tea

for a modest sum of RM33.00 (approximately USD8/EUR7). 

We then hopped back into BiBi to head back to the home, but not before making a stop at the 7-Eleven along Jalan Pejabat so that Brendan could pick up some snacks. We returned to the home where I continued working on the videos from today, and returned to the rest house at 10:00pm to immediately start packing.

KT Day 4 │ Pasar Kedai Payang!

Market Hunt!

Despite the drama with Titan Cafe last night we managed to get a relatively good night's sleep and woke up at half past seven. We woke Brendan up but he opted to continue with his beauty sleep.

As is always the case we got ready and walked over to the home at eight to get a load of laundry going. No trip to Kuala Terengganu would be complete without a visit to my beloved market, Pasar Kedai Payang (PKP). I had very fond memories of the old market, accompanying my mother to this market as she shopped for groceries back in the day when a cluster of five ikan kembung (Chub Mackerels?) cost only RM2.00 (approximately USD0.50/EUR0.40) while a hand of banana was barely RM1.00 (approximately USD/EUR0.20)!

We arrived at Pasar Kedai Payang 1 (PKP1) at half past eight then walked in and went in search of breakfast. There were several food stalls on either side on the aisle and we opted for the first and nearest one, sweetly named Kayu Manis (or Cinnamon). We scanned their diminutive menu and quickly settled on their:

• Nasi Dagang
• Nasi Minyak
• 2 Sugar-free Iced Tea

for a modest sum of only RM16.00 (approximately USD4/EUR3). 

Breakfast out of the way we walked over to Pasar Kedai Payang 2 (PKP2) to begin our hunt for keropok and other heavenly goodies. We took a stroll around checking the various stalls selling keropok and serunding (meat floss) before finally circling back to Kak Salmah's stall. Here we went a little nuts and bought:

• 10 packets of raw keropok
• 2 x 500 gram packets of beef serunding
• 2 x 200 gram packets of beef serunding
• 5 x 100 gram packets of beef serunding
• 5 x 100 gram  packets of chicken serunding
• 2 packets of fish serunding knotted spring rolls
• 2 x 50 packets of Keropok Ikan Segera SEAmEQ

Our handsome bounty eventually came to RM345.00 (approximately USD81/EUR72), money well spent in our minds since most of these items will cost almost double in Kuala Lumpur.

We walked back to BiBi to store away our bounty then headed into PKP1 to see what they had to offer. Unlike the old cramped and claustrophobia inducing rows of stalls on the first floor of the original PKP the new PKP1 had  spacious and organised rows of batik merchants. We toured the ground floor then went up to the first floor to see more of the same.

Truth be told Jakarta's Thamrin City has spoiled us where batik was concerned.

We then headed back to the home to begin our respective chores. A short while later Ah Seng the electrician turned up to install our solar lamp at the back of the home. He also moved the previous malfunctioning lamp to the front, to test and see if it works.

Just as Ah Seng was about to leave my good buddy Vinodh dropped by bearing gifts of Nasi Dagang. We sat and chatted for about half an hour before Vinodh took his leave, he wanted to hitch a ride with us tomorrow but thought twice when we told him we'd be leaving at seven in the morning. He's obviously not a morning person.

By two the heat was unbearable so we beat a hasty retreat to the rest house. We woke Brendan up and showered before heading down to the common area to feast on the Nasi Dagang that Vinodh brought for us. By half past three we went back to the home where I continued working on our videos, while Cat started a load of laundry.

KT Day 3 │ Lim Sian Tian • Ah Huat • Grab Food!

More Chores!

We picked you up again returning from breakfast and running several errands including getting an office chair and provisions from Mr. DIY.

Once at the home I continued work on our videos while Cat busied herself with micro chores in and around the house. I managed to capture some of her activities on time lapse.

Lunchtime came and went but we were not hungry since our breakfast of Nasi Dagang and Nasi Kerabu was quite filling. We also made made a call to our regular plumber Ah Huat who promised to be at the home by five this evening.

We continued working then walked back to the rest house at two for a shower and change of clothes. Half an hour later just as we were about to get ready Ah Huat called to inform that he would be at the home by three instead.

At the appointed hour we walked over to the home to find Ah Huat patiently waiting for us. He began work replacing the faulty kitchen faucet, we had the presence of mind to send him a photo of the offending faucet for him to source a suitable replacement.

He was done ten minutes later. The replacement faucet and his labour costs including transportation came to only RM80.00 (approximately USD19/EUR17). We then headed out for another errand at Mr. DIY where we made away with RM104.70 (approximately USD24/EUR22) worth of provisions.

Feeling a little hungry we ordered take out via the Grab food app. After perusing the various restaurants available we opted for Nasi Ayam KJ and ordered:

• 2 Chicken Rice
• 2 Iced Lychee with Rose Cordial

for a total of RM32.80 (approximately USD8/EUR7).  We placed our order at 3:50pm and the Grab driver delivered our late lunch forty minutes later.

Lunch out of the way we continued doing our respective chores throughout the evening before finally heading back to the rest house at half past seven. We were not in the mood to drive out to dinner so once again Grab fppd came to our rescue. Determined to enjoy local cuisine we settled on a restaurant known as Nasi Lemak Womoh.

We placed our order for three sets of their Nasi Minyak with Khemok Chicken gravy each with Iced Tea for a total of RM43.40 (approximately USD10/EUR9).

The order was placed right before leaving the home, we then managed to dash back to the rest house for a quick shower before the Grab rider delivered the food. The rest house has a common area downstairs with its own little pantry, a lounge area and several rows of tables and chairs where one could get work done.

Brendan, Cat and I gathered here at the common area to finally have a meal together as family, the first time since we first arrived here. After dinner Brendan retired to her room while I stayed behind to finish up some work on the laptop while Cat sat at the lounge scrolling through her IG feed. We felt a little bloated and in need of some carbonated drinks so for the third time today we placed an order with Grab Food.

This time the merchant was Titan Cafe and we ordered three soda based drinks for a total of RM39.09 (approximately USD10/EUR9). The order was placed at nine and we were made to wait a whopping hour and a half before our order was delivered. We made a mental note to avoid this merchant in future, and their one-star rating reflected this.

We then went up to our room at half past ten hoping to have an early night.

Sedulous Saturday!

We again  had a good night's sleep and yet again woke up at half past eight. Brendan chose to continue with his beauty sleep and did not join us this morning as well.

As is now a routine for us we got ready and walked over to the home at twenty past nine to get a load of laundry going before driving out in search of breakfast. With something local in mind we made the short drive to Jalan Sultan Omar, near my old primary school and parked in front of the Warung Pok Man Telur stall.

Here we joined the queue and quickly ordered the:

• hot Nescafe
• Iced Lemon Tea

together with several packets of local sweet cakes our breakfast came to RM28.00 (approximately USD7/EUR6). We then walked back to BiBi and drove back to the vicinity of our home. At the main road of Jalan Sultan Ismail we stopped by the furniture shop Ban Soon Hin which coincidentally is owned by our neighbor Ng (for some reason nicknamed Ah Tee).

We were looking for an office chair for the long hours spent at the dining table working on our videos, and finally decided on a greyscale model for RM380.00 (approximately USD89/EUR79). No more back aches! The shop promised to send the fully assembled chair to the home by noon today, which suited us fine.

We spent some time chatting with Ah Tee before making our back to BiBi and making a nother short drive to Mr. DIY along Jalan Tengku Ampuan Mariam to get some provisions for RM82.60 (approximately USD19/EUR17). 

We then drove back to the home where I as always continued working on our videos while Cat pottered around the house. The chair was delivered to us at noon as promised, woot!

KT Day 2 │ Lim Sian Tian • Eja Corner • Seng Huat!

Batu Buruk and Beyond!

We picked you up again after coming back from breakfast and running errands.

We spent the next few hours productively as Cat and I continued to focus on our respective chores and before we knew it lunchtime was upon us. Brendan chose to continue sleeping at the rest house so we drove out without him.

 We drove out to quickly discover almost all eateries were closed for Friday prayers. We eventually ended up at Batu Buruk and found a row of food stalls behind the Kuala Terengganu Aquatic Centre. We parked BiBi and chose the nearest food stall which happened to be Eja Corner.

The food stall offered a myriad of seafood based cuisine so we settled on:

• Fried Yellow Noodles
• Fried Rice Vermicelli
• 12 sticks of Keropok Lekor
• 1 Ikan Celup Tepung
• 2 Coconut drinks
• 1 Coconut Shake

for a total of RM44.00 (approximately USD10/EUR9).

Lunch out of the way we then made our way to Seng Huat Electrical to meet up with Ben. Top on our list was a 26" industrial stand fan, and in the end we made away with:

• iSonic Stainless Steel Kettle IJK-1803

for a grand total of RM600.00 (approximately USD140/EUR124).

We then made our way back to the home, deposited our electrical goodies then made our way back to the rest house for a quick shower and change of clothes. Twenty minutes later we were out the door and walked back to the home where we unpacked our boxes of electrical goodies. Cat got the ball rolling by unboxing her vacuum cleaner and began using it around the ground floor to her heart's content. The upstairs is an entirely other matter, and we hoped to engage a day maid to help with cleaning, mopping and wiping the windows upstairs.

At the same time I began assembling the massive 26" inch industrial stand fan. After a few hiccups I managed to get the behemoth of a fan installed and we enjoyed the breeze that its massive blades produced. Even at its lowest speed of 1 the breeze was powerful, we cannot even imagine it at its highest setting of 3!

We then spent the next few hours working, me at the laptop and Cat at the washing machine as we both got a ton of work done.

In that time Brendan woke up and ordered McDonalds with the Grab food app. I then cut my finger on the condensed milk can so Brendan ran over to the FamilyMart along Jalan Pejabat to get a small bottle of Dettol and bandages. Later in the evening he went to FamilyMart then ZUS Coffee for some grub and drinks. All this was off-camera, so you can only take our word for it. The home is turning out to be a very strategic place to stay!

We eventually left the home at a quarter past nine and then met up with our neighbour Ng and we started chatting. Then another neighbour Heng joined us and by the time we got back to the rest house it was already past 10:00pm.

Footle Friday!

We had a good night's sleep and woke up at half past eight. We got ready and walked over to the home at a quarter past nine to get a load of laundry going before driving out in search of breakfast. Since BiBi was badly in need of a shower we decided to head to Batas Baru where a car wash and nasi kandar restaurant were co-located.

We deposited BiBi in the hands of the car wash personnel at Warisan Car Wash then walked across to Al Mubin Maju for breakfast. We ordered the:

• Roti Canai Sardin
• Roti Telur
• hot Nescafe
• Iced Tea

for a modest sum of RM16.00 (approximately USD4/EUR3). We then walked back to Warisan Car Wash and paid them RM20.00 (approximately USD5/EUR4) for external wash and internal vacuuming.

We then drove to Sabasun Hyper Runcit at Bukit Kecil to get some groceries for RM64.15 (approximately USD15/EUR13) then Mr. DIY along Jalan Tengku Ampuan Mariam to get some provisions for RM174.20 (approximately USD40/EUR36). Our final errand was to get a small bottle of Nescafe Gold from the 7-Eleven along Jalan Pejabat for RM15.00  (approximately USD4/EUR3).

We then drove back to the home where I continued working on our videos while Cat pottered around the house.

KT Day 1 │ Lim Sian Tian • Zeeror Mini Market!

Dinner at Batu Buruk!

We picked you up again waking up at half past five in the evening, freshened up then walked over to the home. I began downloading the videos from today while Cat busied herself cleaning the front porch. We left Brendan behind to left him enjoy his beauty sleep and left word to let us know when he's awake and hungry.

We spent the next hour or so doing various chores before we got a text from Brendan. We met up with him at the parking space opposite the rest house and drove out at 9:00pm. 

We drove aimlessly for a while as we weighed our options for dinner then BiBi's fuel warning came on forcing us to Batu Buruk in search of a Petronas station. 

We then spotted a cluster of food stalls along TY Hotel and decided to check it out. We eventually settled on Zeeror Burger that also served Thai cuisine and ordered the:

• Beef Bone Soup
• Tom Yum Chicken
• Nasi Goreng Kampung
• 2 plates of white rice
• 2 plain Omelettes
• a serving of Keropok Lekor
• 2 Iced Lemon Tea 
• Watermelon Juice 

We later added an Oblong Chicken Burger Special as well as a Double Beef Burger for a grand total of RM62.00 (approximately USD14/EUR13). 

Our succulent dinner out of the way we then hopped back into BiBi for a short drive to the Batu Buruk Petronas station. Here we filled up RM100.00 worth of fuel (approximately USD23/EUR21) before driving back to the home. We then spent another hour here as I worked on our videos while Cat busied herself with little chores here and there.

By the time we got back to the rest house it was close to midnight. Stay tuned for our next video as we have breakfast at an unlikely location!

Road Trip!

Almost three weeks after I got Covid-19 we were headed northeast to Kuala Terengganu. The trip was a welcomed respite as we sought to recharge ourselves, physically and mentally.

The last time we were in my hometown was in June last year. Before we went back to Kuala Lumpur we left the keys to the gate with a neighbour who has been helping to keep an eye on the property, he has also been tending to the plants. Thank you Heng!

This time around we left our condo before dawn to begin our long drive up the east coast. We headed north and drove past the Gombak Toll Plaza at 6:30am. After almost an hour we exited Karak Highway at the Bentong Toll Plaza before making our way past the Karak Toll Plaza and onto the Lebuhraya Pantai Timur (LPT, or East Coast Expressway).

We arrived at the Temerloh Rest & Recreation area at 7:40am and had a simple breakfast of Nasi Lemak and Noodle with Soup, together with drinks it all came to RM26.00 (approximately USD6/EUR5).

Breakfast out of the way we then resumed our drive forty five minutes later, and after two more hours we finally drove past the Kuala Terengganu Toll Plaza then headed to town for lunch. We were determined to have lunch at our perennial favourite Chicken Rice restaurant, Chuan Kee. Alas by the time we got there it was noon and they were all out.

The next best thing was On The Way (OTW) Kopitiam about a kilometer away along Jalan Pesisir Payang. We were lucky to get a seat since OTW quickly filled up. A quick scan of the QR code and we placed our usual order of:

• French Fries 
• Iced Tea with Evaporated Milk

Our lovely lunch came to RM66.40 (approximately USD16/EUR14).

At 1:00pm we made our way to my late Aunty's home excited to check in on the place. Back in June last year we engaged a cleaning crew to give the house a comprehensive spring cleaning. Apart from cleaning the home we also disposed a ton of junk that required two trip of a small lorry. 

The cleaning crew had spent an intense 14 hours cleaning the entire house. In time we hope to bring this home back to its former glory, and become a family 'homestay' of sorts.

We spent some time unloading a few things that we brought along for the home including a solar spotlight to replace the malfunctioning lamp at the back of the home. While Cat washed the toilet downstairs with its newly installed bowl and cistern I busied myself inspecting each electrical outlet.

We then drove a very short distance to MS Resthouse located along the same street and checked in. We had booked two rooms for a duration of four nights that came to RM99.00 a room a night (approximately USD/EUR). Since my late Aunty's home was equipped with a newly purchased washing machine we no longer needed to look for accommodations that provided a washer.

We were in Room 7A while Brendan was across the corridor in Room 2A on the first floor of the rest house. We spent the next three hours catching up on some much needed sleep and arose at half past five.

Day Trip │ Genting Highlands!

Genting Premium Outlets!

Two weeks after coming back from Penang we decided to go on a day trip to Genting's Premium Outlets. It's been a while since our last visit, so we were chuffed. 

A couple of days ago Cat made a trip to KL Sentral to buy our return tickets from the Resorts World counter. We got the 9:15am bus going up and the 2:00pm coming down, each ticket only cost RM10.00 (approximately USD/EUR2).

I was feeling under the weather plagued with a stuffy nose and headache the past few days but thought nothing much of it, so today we left our home at eight meaning to hail a Grab car to KL Sentral. Alas, there were no drivers available, so we walked out to Sarah Hughes along Jalan TAR to catch a free GOKL Red Line bus instead. 

We eventually caught the free bus at 8:25am and arrived at KL Sentral fifteen minutes later. With time to spare till our 9:15am bus we decided on breakfast at Richiamo Cafe. Here we ordered the:

• Hazelnut Latte
• Teh Tarik
• Nasi Lemak

that came to RM24.00 (approximately USD/EUR5).

At nine we made our way down to the Resorts World bus stop and immediately got on. In hindsight we were thankful for buying our tickets early since the Resorts World counter today only sold tickets from 11:30am onwards.

The bus departed at its appointed time, and we drove past the Gombak Toll Plaza at 9:45am, we were well on our way!

We arrived at the Genting Awana Bus Terminal at 10.20am and after a quick potty break began our exploration of Genting Premium Outlet. An hour and a half of browsing the various retail outlets here Cat finally got three dresses from Cotton On for a sum of RM120.00 (approximately USD27/EUR24).

 

We then took advantage of the buy two get one free offer from Levi's. I got three pairs of their straight cut 505s for RM458.00 (approximately USD104/EUR92). Our final purchase of the day was from the Universal Traveller store where we got a 20-inch carry-on bag complete with a separate compartment for my 16-inch laptop for RM599.00 (approximately USD136/EUR120). 

All done with our shopping spree we then began to weigh our options. We browsed the food court, but none seemed appealing. My cold unabated, we eventually settled on an herbal lunch at the Pao Xiang Bak Kut Teh. We ordered the:

• Lean Meat 
• Intestines
• Tofu Pok
• Hot Chinese Tea
• Cold Chinese Tea

for a total of RM94.00 (approximately USD21/EUR19).

With an hour till our 2:00pm bus we then had drinks at Coffee Bean. Our hot Caramel Macchiato and iced Matcha Tea came to RM36.10 (approximately USD8/EUR7). We made our way back to the Genting Awana Bus Terminal at a quarter to two. The departed at 2:05pm and we were back at KL Sentral about an hour later.

My cold was getting worse, so we headed to Poliklinik NU Sentral up at the concourse level. On a hunch the doctor asked that I submit to a Covid-19 test: I was positive! 

I was then prescribed the usual flu medication except for antibiotics and asked that I come back on Monday so that she can issue me with a three-day medical leave. Due to my rapidly declining condition and to limit my exposure to those around we decided to hail a Grab car for a fare of RM24.00 (approximately USD/EUR5) back to our home.

Hopefully, this latest bout of Covid-19 blows over fast. Our next adventure to my home town is about two weeks, so please stay tuned!

PEN to KUL │ Aeroline • Queensbay Mall • Corus Hotel!

Going Home!

We woke up at six in the morning and got ready. Most of the packing was done the night before so we were ready to go an hour later.

We sent the hotel a message informing that we were checking out then hailed a six-seater Grab car for a fare of RM24.00 (approximately USD/EUR5) to Queensbay Mall. The Aeroline bus we were catching was due to depart at 8:30am.

The Grab car picked us up at 6:50am and we arrived at Queensbay Mall twenty five minutes later. 

With more than an hour to go we got settled in at the Starbucks seating area at the north zone of Queensbay Mall. At precisely eight it opened so I walked in to get a Caramel Macchiato that came with a free doughnut for RM14.00 (approximately USD/EUR3).

At a quarter past eight the bus bearing the registration number VDM8812 arrived, and we were allowed to board five minutes later. 

 The bus departed Queensbay Mall at 8:35am and drove across the Sultan Abdul Halim Muadzam Shah Bridge ten minutes later before making its way past the Bandar Cassia Toll Plaza at 9:05am.

We were late in booking our return tickets but were fortunately enough to be able to book the last two seats at the lower berth of the bus.

Due to its proximity with the lavatory we were afraid that it might prove uncomfortable to us. Turned out our fears were misplaced, and best of all we had our best sleep seated at the lower berth.

We were soon driving along the North South Expressway and the uneventful journey took approximately five hours. Traffic was reasonably light, unlike the eight and a half hour crawl of a few days ago.

At 10:45am we made a pitstop at the Simpang Pulai rest area before resuming the journey to Kuala Lumpur. We drove past the Jalan Duta Toll Plaza at 1:00pm and arrived at Corus Hotel twenty minutes later.

Brendan was already waiting for us when we arrived and we got back home at 1:45pm.

PENANG Day 3 │ ICT Mall • Lighthouse Cafe • Skin Nation Tattoo!

Final Tattoo!

I woke up at eight and continued working on our videos. Cat had her beauty sleep for the next two hours before hitting the shower at half past ten. We were out the door at fifteen past eleven.

We hailed a Grab car for a fare of RM8.00 (approximately USD/EUR2) to ICT Mall in search of earphones. After browsing a few stores we finally got a pair that was compatible with a Type-C port for RM29.00 (approximately USD7/EUR6).

I left my usual earphones behind and was in desperate need of one during my long session with MC of Skin Nation Tattoo later. After that we walked over to the food court on the fourth floor of 1st Avenue Mall, but nothing struck our fancy, so we hailed another Grab car for the same fare of RM8.00 (approximately USD/EUR2) to The Lighthouse Cafe. Five minutes later we arrived at 12:00pm and promptly ordered the:

• Hokkien Char 
• Cold Plum Juice 
• Coca-Cola 

for a grand total of only RM37.60 (approximately USD9/EUR8).

After lunch we walked across and made our way to Skin Nation Tattoo where I had an appointment with MC at 1:00pm.

We waited a while before being summoned by MC to come up to the studio. We parted ways here as Cat headed out to shop at Chowrasta Market and beyond.

This will be the last tattoo in a while, and it was only fitting that I got a crucifix. The stencil that MC eventually generated blew my mind, and he began work at two in the afternoon.

MC's masterpiece was complete a little over two hours later. This crucifix will be the last in the series of body art for me for a long while. 

Beginning with the Sakura by Victor of Guntur Tatu; then the Red Devil by MC; followed by the Garuda and the Jasmine by Indra; the dreamcatcher by Nan and finally today's Crucifix again by MC I will call it a wrap!

I then paid MC his dues and arranged to meet Cat at Chowrasta Market just a short walk away. From the Aunty at the Shin Huat stall we got:

• 2 x 500g packets of pickled Papaya
• 2 x 500g packets of pickled Green Mango
• 1 x 500g packet of pickled Amra, also known as Hog Plum

for a total of RM41.00 (approximately USD/EUR9).

We then made our way back to the hotel. I was particularly knackered by the session with MC so will probably order in with the Grab food app.

PENANG Day 2 │ Pengkalan Weld and Back!

To the Jetty and Back!

We picked you up in the evening as we hailed a Grab car for a fare of RM8.00 (approximately USD/EUR2) to The Jetty Food Court in Port Weld. The ride from the hotel to the food court took only ten minutes as we arrived at 6:40pm.

We browsed for a little while before settling for:

• 2 Char Kueh Teow 
• Fried Spring Rolls 
• Ambara Juice
• a small bottle of Tiger Beer 

for a grand total of RM50.80 (approximately USD11/EUR10).

After dinner Cat suggested we walk over to Kota Lama where a row floats were getting ready for a procession. We had no idea what the occasion was or where it was headed. 

We walked northeast along Pengkalan Weld before turning left onto Gat Lebuh China headed northwest. At the intersection with Beach Street we turned right headed northeast again until the roundabout at the Queen Victoria Memorial Clock Tower.

Here we turned left onto Lebuh Light until we caught up with the procession. They had gathered across from Padang Kota getting ready to kick things off, while we waited for the free CAT bus at the Bank Negara bus stop. 

The bus soon arrived and five minutes later we got off at the bus stop opposite Hotel Cititel. We then continued along Jalan Penang before turning left onto Jalan Hutton and after walking across Jalan Transfer we were back at the hotel.

On the Prowl!

I woke up at eight and began work on our videos, then hit the showers at nine. Cat was in a chirpy mood because she had her beauty sleep, and we left the hotel at ten.

We headed to the bus stop at the 7-Eleven along Jalan Penang to catch the free CAT bus to KOMTAR. Here we renewed our Mutiara bus passes then headed up to the second floor and walked across to 1st Avenue Mall.

We then visited the Watson's pharmacy to get a Cetaphil cleanser and lotion set for my dreamcatcher tattoo. We then headed down to the Village Grocer on the ground floor to get some provisions.

Done with our errands we walked out and across Jalan Magazine onto Lebuh McNair for an early lunch at Chang Leong Nanyang Coffee. We perused the menu before settling on:

• Hokkien Mee
• Curry Chicken with Rice
• both came with Iced Chrysanthemum 
• a plate of Loh Bak
• (I then added) their signature Coffee

that came to a reasonable RM49.70 (approximately USD11/EUR10).

After lunch we walked back to 1st Avenue Mall before eventually ending up at the KOMTAR Utara bus stop. Here we caught a Rapid Penang bus #202 back to the hotel.

KUL to PEN │ Aeroline • Hutton Central • Red Garden!

George Town!

A week after returning from Bangkok we were on the prowl again, this time to the island state in the north known as the "Pearl of the Orient". We wanted to take advantage of the four-day weekend in conjunction with Id Fitr celebrations, so we booked our Aeroline bus tickets online for RM72.00 each (approximately USD16/EUR15) departing from Corus Hotel today at 9:30am.

Brendan had other plans so wasn't joining us this time as well, so he sent us to Corus Hotel at 8:00am. With time to spare until our departure we decided to have breakfast at the hotel's Dondang Sayang Coffee House for RM34.80 (approximately USD8/EUR7) per person. 

The bus made its appearance at 9:15am and after waiting for three missing passengers finally departed at 9:35am. The bus bearing the registration number VDM8816 is scheduled to arrive at Queensbay Mall five hours later.

We feared a repeat of Christmas 2023's nightmare ten-hour journey to Penang but driving past the Jalan Duta Toll Plaza at 9:50am with relatively light traffic we were hopeful this would not be the case.

The Malaysian government declared a 50% discount on toll fares for yesterday and today traffic along the North South Expressway, as a result traffic began to slow half an hour into the journey.

Five hours later we finally made a pitstop at the Simpang Pulai rest area then resumed the journey fifteen minutes later. Looks like a repeat of the Christmas 2023 journey is on the cards!

We eventually drove across the Sultan Abdul Halim Muadzam Shah Bridge at 5:35pm and arrived at Queensbay Mall half an hour later. All in all it took eight and a half hours for us to get to Penang.

We then alighted from the bus, thanked the crew, and collected our luggage before walking into Queensbay Mall for a quick potty break.

We then hailed a 6-seater Grab car, but the first two drivers cancelled on us. Third time's the charm as we were finally picked up at 6:33pm for a fare of RM22.00 (approximately USD/EUR5) to Hutton Central Hotel.

The ride across town took three quarters of an hour and by the time we arrived dusk was upon us. We checked in and headed up to our one bedroom apartment to deposit our bags before heading out again.

We walked north along Jalan Transfer before turning right onto Jalan Sri Bahari then turning left headed north again along Jalan Penang. We then walked across and arrived at our default location for dinner: Red Garden Food Paradise!

We both ordered from the same Thai stall:

• Thai Fried Rice 
• Pad Khra Pow

then Cat added a set of Vietnamese Spring Rolls and together with a large bottle of Heineken as well as a jumbo glass of Amla juice our dinner came to RM79.00 (approximately USD18/ EUR16).

After dinner we stopped by the convenience store Happy Mart for some titbits before continuing back to Hutton Central.

BKK to KUL │ Suvarnabhumi to KLIA!

Leaving on a Jet Plane!

Where did seven days go? The idiom "time flies when you're having fun" doesn't even begin to describe our feelings!

I woke up at seven as always and began working on our videos. We got ready at ten and together with our yellow submarines we headed down to the lobby an hour later. We then deposited the unit key in the designated mailbox and our yellow submarines with the front desk as we booked an airport transfer.

The fare was THB600 (approximately USD18/EUR16/MYR79) and we scheduled our pick-up for 2:000m. We then walked over to the in-house cafe, The Gourmet House for lunch where we ordered the:

• American Fried Rice 
• Radna with Pork
• Iced Orange Americano 
• Coca-Cola 

which came up to THB620 (approximately USD18/EUR17/MYR81). Later I added a hot Mocha for THB120 (approximately USD4/EUR3/MYR16).

After lunch we retired to the common area to relax with my hot Mocha. Our airport transfer duly picked us up at 1:55pm. The traffic was quite bad so the ride to Suvarnabhumi took roughly an hour as we were dropped off at Gate 7.

We quickly located the Malaysia Airlines baggage check-in counters. As explained in a previous video learning our costly lesson from a previous trip we made sure to purchase additional luggage allocation for this return trip.

Our luggage including the two new yellow submarines came to exactly the allocated weight of 45 kilograms, which was a huge relief. Boarding passes in hand we took a seat at a bench as we contemplated our next move since we were frightfully early.

With almost four hours to departure we decided to head into the security checkpoint first. Ten minutes later we emerged unscathed and walked  straight into Immigration, where we scanned our passports at the auto gates and breezed through.

A quick scan of the FIDS confirmed that MH775 was on time to depart at 6:40pm from Gate F2. We then walked the length of the promenade and settled on the Dean & Deluca outlet where I got a Caramel Macchiato for THB 198 (approximately USD6/EUR5/MYR26) as Cat went window shopping.

I spent the next hour or so working on our videos as Cat eventually returned with several items from the various souvenir shops.

We realised at 5:30pm that Gate F2 was open for boarding. Apparently Malaysia Airlines sent an email at 5:16pm.

We immediately took the escalator down to Gate F2 then took our seats before being allowed to board the plane at 5:50pm. The flight was surprisingly not full, and the final group of passengers boarded at 6:10pm. The plane finally pushed back at 6:40pm and after some time taxiing onto the runway MH775 eventually took off ten minutes later.

The two-hour flight was largely uneventful, and the plane began its descent at 9:20pm. MH775 touched down at 9:50pm local time.

Kudos to Captain Nigel and Chief Steward Jamal for an excellent flight.

We disembarked 10 minutes later and headed to Carousel J to collect our luggage before  heading down to the KLIA Express Transit station. The train to KL Sentral departed at 11:00pm and we arrived half an hour later. Traffic was very bad even at this hour due to the impending Eid Fitr celebrations so Brendan picked us up at the KLIA Express KL City Air Terminal Arrival doors about an hour later. We were finally home by 1:00am.

BANGKOK Day 7 │ ICON Siam and Beyond Pt2!

Epic Excursion Continues!

We picked you up again leaving ICON Siam and catching the same boat for THB8 each (approximately USD0.20/EUR0.20/MYR1) back to the Bangkok Sathorn Pier.

We disembarked and headed up to the Saphan Taksin station. Unfortunately, we caught the wrong train headed to Bang Wa. We got off at the Wutthakat BTS station then hailed a Grab car for THB173 (approximately USD5/EUR5/MYR23) to Platinum Fashion Mall.

The ride took almost an hour or so and we arrived close to 3:00pm. Cat went in search of three-quarter pants, and eventually got five pants and two blouses for THB1,600 (approximately USD47/EUR44/MYR209). Then Cat walked into the Eve and Boy store to get a bottle of Dr. Pong's Recovery Serum for THB399 (approximately USD12/EUR11/MYR52).

We walked out and to hail a tuk-tuk to the Rachathewi BTS station just a kilometre away but the asking price of THB200 (approximately USD6/EUR5/MYR26) was inhibitive. Then a random tuk-tuk offered THB100 (approximately USD3/EUR3/MYR13) instead. We accepted and hopped on, enjoying our first tuk-tuk ride in a while.

We soon arrived at the Rachathewi BTS station and mistakenly caught the train on the Silom line bound for Bang Wa. Long story short we eventually caught a train on the Sukhumvit line, the correct train bound for Kheha.

Seven stops and twenty minutes later we arrived at the Ekkamai BTS station. After what felt like an eternity we were finally back at Gateway Ekkamai. We headed down to the exit to wait for the free shuttle back to Tierra Residences.

We got back to Tierra Residences and began packing. Later we visited Arokah Massage at the Rama IV PTT station area. We had averaged 10k+ steps a day so our feet was pretty battered and in needed of some TLC:

• Cat opted for the foot and shoulder massage 
• while I asked for just the foot massage 

for a combined total of THB750 (approximately USD22/EUR20/MYR98). The massage did wonders to our aching feet subjected to harsh punishment over the week that we were in Bangkok.

We then walked over to our favourite food stall, Pad Thai Kitchen and ordered:

• Pad Kra Pow with Minced Pork
• Pad Kra Pow with Cuts of Pork
• Coca-Cola 
• Apple Soda

for a modest THB219 (approximately USD7/EUR6/MYR29). We've been coming to Pad Thai Kitchen for dinner almost every night since the first night we arrived, so it was only fitting that we have our dinner here on our last night in Bangkok.

As is always the case we then walked across to the 7-Eleven and got some provisions for THB270.00 (approximately USD8/EUR7/MYR35). Our final pitstop of the night was the local Amazon Coffee where we got a hot Mocha and Iced Milk Green Tea for THB110 (approximately MYR3/USD3/EUR14). We then walked back to Tierra Residences.

BANGKOK Day 7 │ ICON Siam and Beyond Pt1!

Epic Excursion!

We woke up at a quarter past seven and got ready. We headed down to the lobby an hour or so later and was able to catch the 8:30 shuttle to Gateway Ekkamai.

We arrived five minutes later, and since Gateway Ekkamai was still not open we walked around it and took an elevator up. We then checked our Rabbit card balances at the kiosk and added another THB200 each (approximately USD6/EUR5/MYR26) worth of value.

We then boarded the train headed to Khu Kot and disembarked at Siam BTS station after seven stops. We then switched to the Silom line bound for National Stadium, which was the next stop.

We disembarked and walked down and across to the other platform bound for Bang Wa. We then disembarked at Saphan Taksin after six stops then exited the BTS station and made our way to the Bangkok Sathorn Pier to catch the orange flag Chao Phraya boat to ICON Siam.

We paid the THB8 fare each (approximately USD0.20/EUR0.20/MYR1) and immediately boarded a boat that was ready and the waiting. The boat ride to ICON Siam hardly took five minutes, and since we had fifteen minutes till it opened we went exploring ICON Siam Park.

We strolled along the banks of the river then made our way to the back end facing the busy Soi Charoen Nakhon. We ended up at the street entrance to ICON Siam and were allowed in ten minutes later. We were famished so we browsed the options here. We were determined to have local cuisine, so we ended up with:

• Ginger Fried Pork with Rice and Egg
• Roasted Duck with Rice
• Mixed Pork Soup
• Hot Thai Coffee 
• Iced Thai Milk Tea

for a grand total of THB330 (approximately USD10/EUR9/MYR43).

We then began our exploration of ICON Siam in earnest. Our first port of call was a local Thai store, NaRaYa. We spent some time browsing before making away with:

• 2 bucket hats for moi
• 2 summer hats for Cat 
• 2 small bags for a friend 
• a toiletries bag 
• 7 coin pouches as souvenirs 
• a handbag for Cat 

for a grand total of THB4,020 (approximately USD119/EUR110/MYR525).

We continued our stroll along the food fest on the ground floor and got a couple of fridge magnets for THB100 each (approximately USD3/EUR3/MYR13).

We then headed up and ended up at Uniqlo where I got three pairs of stretchable short pants for THB1,772 (approximately USD52/EUR48/MYR231). We then walked across to H&M and got a pair of pants and two t-shirts for Brendan for THB2,398 (approximately USD71/EUR65/MYR313).

We continued browsing and eventually made our way down to the riverside entrance at ICON Siam Park.
