Kota Samarahan — Beating the Monday Jam
Kuching is notorious for its Monday morning traffic jams, especially to and from Kota Samarahan. With Brendan’s graduation ceremony happening tomorrow morning, we played it safe and booked a night’s stay at My Inn Hotel, right beside UNIMAS. No stress, no rushing, no risk.
We drove to Kota Samarahan around lunchtime and checked in at 2:00pm:
- Brendan’s single room — RM163.40
- Our double room — RM163.40
- Deposit — RM50.00 per room
(≈ USD36/EUR36 for each room, and USD11/EUR10 deposit.)
We dropped our bags in the rooms and headed out again.
Searching for Dayak Cuisine
We asked the front desk for recommendations on local Dayak cuisine, but being a Sunday, most eateries were closed.
So we drove around the Desa Ilmu area near Aiman Mall, and eventually ended up at an Indonesian restaurant called Unplugged Coffee.
The waiter informed us that many dishes were unavailable on Sundays, so after a quick scan of the menu, we settled on:
- Nasi Lemak with Fried Chicken
- Nasi Lemak with Squid Sambal
- Chicken Chop
- A variety of drinks
Our late lunch came to RM44.00 (≈ USD/EUR9).
Simple, filling, and enough to keep us going.
Rest Before the Big Day
We drove back to the hotel and rested for a bit, waiting for the weather to cool. Brendan wanted a mini photo session in his graduation garb at several iconic UNIMAS locations — a warm up before the official shoot tomorrow.
