TMII Part 2!
Exploring Taman Mini Indonesia Indah: Culture, Views, and a Few Lessons Learned
Our visit to Taman Mini Indonesia Indah (TMII) was meant to be a leisurely cultural experience—but it turned into quite an adventure! Here’s a detailed account of our day, plus practical tips to help you make the most of your visit.
A Rocky Start: My Unexpected Fall
While waiting for the next shuttle cart at the stand, I missed a step and fell sideways, landing hard on my right elbow and knee. The impact knocked the wind out of me, and for a moment, I was seeing stars! Thankfully, a passing shuttle driver stopped immediately to help me up. I brushed off the dust and climbed aboard, feeling dazed but determined to continue.
Tip: TMII is vast, and you’ll do a lot of walking. Wear comfortable shoes with good grip and watch your step around uneven surfaces.
First Impressions: A Cultural Wonderland
Despite the mishap, we pressed on. TMII is a sprawling park that showcases Indonesia’s rich cultural diversity through provincial pavilions, each representing a different region’s architecture and traditions. We began our exploration heading north, stopping at several provinces to admire and photograph their unique designs.
Tip: Allocate at least half a day if you want to explore multiple pavilions. Each one offers something unique—from traditional houses to cultural exhibits.
The Cable Car Experience
About an hour later, we hopped on a shuttle to Cable Car Station B. For IDR 25,000 (around MYR 6 / USD 2 / EUR 1) per person, we enjoyed a 25-minute round trip that gave us a stunning bird’s-eye view of the iconic lake shaped like the map of Indonesia—a highlight of the visit!
Tip: The cable car is a must-do for first-time visitors. Go early to avoid long queues, and bring a camera for panoramic shots.
Southern Provinces and Souvenir Shopping
Next, we rode back to the main entrance and switched to a southbound shuttle for a free tour of the southern provinces. This 20-minute ride brought us full circle to the entrance, where we browsed the merchandise store. Cat picked up a few souvenirs for IDR 162,000 (approximately MYR 41 / USD 10 / EUR 8).
Tip: Souvenir prices are reasonable, but bring cash for small purchases. Some stalls may not accept cards.
Practical Info for TMII Visitors
- Opening Hours: Typically 6:00 AM – 5:00 PM (check before you go).
- Getting Around: Free shuttle carts operate throughout the park, but expect some waiting time.
- Entry Fees: IDR25,000 each (approximately MYR6/USD1/EUR1), but attractions like the cable car have separate charges.
- Best Time to Visit: Weekdays for fewer crowds.
- Accessibility: The park is large, so consider renting a bike or using shuttles if you have mobility concerns.
Wrapping Up
By noon, we wrapped up our TMII adventure. My knee was getting progressively worse, so we hailed a fixed-fare Bluebird taxi to our next destination.
Stay tuned—next up, lunch at a mall we’ve never visited before!
