Chinese New Year Eve by the River
After dinner at Precious Old China in Central Market, we headed back up to our rooms to change into something more comfortable. With the night still young, we decided to go for a gentle stroll to usher in the Lunar New Year in a quieter, more reflective way.
The River of Life
We walked toward the River of Life, where the Gombak River met and flowed into the Klang River. This area, often referred to as Kolam Biru (the Blue Pool), had been designed to turn the river convergence into a sensory space. A dancing fountain, soft fog, and changing lights reflected off the water, transforming the historic area into something calm and almost dreamlike.
Nearby stood the Sultan Abdul Samad Jamek Mosque, one of Kuala Lumpur’s oldest mosques, completed in 1909. Designed by Arthur Benison Hubback, it felt timeless and peaceful against the glow of the lights.
Instead of fireworks and firecrackers, we welcomed the new year with flowing water, mist, and light—quiet, graceful, and fitting.
Wandering Through Old Streets
We continued our walk along Jalan Benteng, behind Central Market, then crossed Jalan Tun Sambanthan and Jalan Hang Kasturi before reaching Jalan Hang Lekir. From there, we found ourselves right in the heart of Petaling Street Market, still lively despite the late hour.
We walked east along Jalan Hang Lekir, turned right onto Jalan Sultan, then continued south and west until we reached Jalan Panggung. Turning into Lorong Panggung, we slipped into Kwai Chai Fong, a narrow alley also known as Little Ghost Lane. Soft lighting revealed murals and textures that carried echoes of the past. We paused, took a few photos, and soaked it all in.
A Startling Moment
As we crossed back toward Jalan Tun Sambanthan, an overzealous motorcyclist attempted to beat a red light and narrowly missed crashing into pedestrians. We stopped him firmly and made it clear how dangerous that move was before continuing on.
Ending the Night Simply
We slowed things down with drinks at Restoran Yusoof dan Zakhir, then made our way back to the hotel, bringing our evening stroll to a close.
It had been a long day—but also a gentle, meaningful one.
Happy Chinese (Lunar) New Year to all.
