Happy New Year 🎉
A lot had happened since we returned from Kuala Terengganu in late November. Most notably, both of us tested positive for COVID 19 on 26 November 2021.
Fortunately, we were classified as mild cases and allowed to complete our quarantine at home.
Brendan remained negative and safely isolated himself in his room, which thankfully had its own bathroom.
A Difficult Period
At one point, our situation became worrying. My SpO₂ levels dropped below 80%, and Cat was ready to call for emergency help. Thankfully, things improved after a few difficult days, and we managed to complete our Home Surveillance Order on 6 December 2021.
A follow up check at the COVID 19 Assessment Centre on 8 December confirmed our recovery, although we were advised to continue resting at home.
The first ten days were tough:
- Breathing felt like altitude sickness
- Constant fatigue and loss of appetite
- Severe weight loss (I lost about 10kg overall)
Recovery was slow. Even after a month:
- Cat’s sense of smell was still affected
- Simple chores left her breathless
- Food had a strange metallic taste for me
- Even short walks felt exhausting
A Fresh Start
With all that behind us, we felt it was time to welcome the new year with something more positive.
We returned to an old favourite—Kang San Ae, a Korean restaurant we had been visiting for over a decade. It had always been our go to place for celebrations—birthdays, special occasions, and now, a quiet new year (and Cat’s birthday, which we had just celebrated a day earlier!).
A Korean Feast
We had originally planned to come the night before, but heavy rain changed our plans. So instead, we made our way there on New Year’s Day.
As always, we didn’t hold back:
- Samgyeopsal (thick, fatty pork belly slices)
- Dwaeji Galbi (marinated pork ribs)
- Maeun Jjukumi Bokkeum (spicy stir fried baby octopus)
- Brendan’s favourite, Kimchi Jjigae (kimchi stew)
It was a proper Korean spread—rich, hearty, and deeply satisfying.
Worth It?
The meal came to RM157.30 (≈ USD38/EUR33).
For the amount and variety of food, we felt it was good value—especially considering Korean cuisine was still somewhat of a novelty here.
Final Thoughts
After everything we had gone through, this meal felt like more than just food. It was:
- A quiet celebration
- A return to something familiar
- And a small step back to normal life
If you were looking for a solid and authentic Korean dining experience in Kuala Lumpur, Kang San Ae remained one of our top recommendations.
Here’s to a healthier, brighter year ahead. 🌟
