TGG Day 2 │ Morning Walkabout

A Later Start Than Planned

We meant to rise early this morning, but the exertions of the previous day kept us in bed longer than expected. Still, we managed to leave the hotel a little after 8am to begin our morning walkabout.

Along Jalan Sultan Ismail and Kampung Cina

We walked west along Jalan Sultan Ismail, then turned north onto Jalan Kampung Cina. We covered the entire 1.5 kilometre stretch until we reached the new Pasar Besar Kedai Payang.

We didn’t explore the market in detail — we’re saving that for a dedicated video later. As for the name Payang, two theories exist:

  • It may come from the perahu payang (payang boat).
  • Or from the local dialect for Kedai Tempayang.

Breakfast and a Missed Boat

We had breakfast at Warung Kak Sal Nasi Dagang before continuing our walk. After eating, we headed to the jetty, hoping to take a small boat across the river to Seberang Takir.

Unfortunately, there were no boats in sight.

What was available were the river cruises — RM50 per person — which didn’t appeal to us. We were looking for the old bot penambang, the small ferry boats that used to shuttle locals across the river, not a fancy tourist speedboat.

Back to the Hotel

Defeated but not dejected, we resumed our walk south along Jalan Banggol. After about a kilometre, we reached our hotel once again.

More to Come

Thus ends our mini walkabout. Stay tuned for our full market hunt video at the Terengganu Central Market (Pasar Besar Kedai Payang) in the days to come.
